I grew up in south Florida. I have camped in Big Cypress. I know the Florida Panther, more elusive than air though it is. Any intrusion into the Big Cypress is the death knell to these beautiful and, now, very rare animals.

Most of Florida's historical and natural heritage has already been lost to development to support the ever increasing numbers of retirees who have moved there in the last 60 years and those who work at jobs to support them.

No matter how bad Miami-Dade's shortfall may be or its needs for cash, to lease out the Big Cypress for oil development is dangerous, foolish, irresponsible, and disrespectful to all of God's creatures who call the Big Cypress Swamp their home.

If you didn't sign the petition, I urge you to do so. If Big Cypress is leased to oil interests, Florida will lose one of its most important natural eco-systems and scientific attractions. And, more of God's creatures will vanish into extinction. Please sign.

I signed it with outrage. I can't believe I am reading this nonsense. There are only 30 panthers in South Florida. If there was a spill there, they would never be able to get it out and the toll on the wildlife would be horrible. And, what about the water supply? And, hurricanes? The state or federal gov. should the buy that land even though they don't have any money either. Maybe we could add a penny to our sales tax to buy the land not that we want to pay more. Is it just me or does it seem like the world is getting crazier? Each posposal seems more far-fetched than the last one I read.
