The Hawaii Superferry followed company procedures to avoid a humpback whale Wednesday. The company released a statement after the rumors spread of a collision with a whale during its morning trip to Maui. "During today's voyage from Oahu to Maui Haw

Why don't they return to the old steamship design using Mr. Coffee-type electric heating elements to heat the water to steam. The electricity would come from wind turbines or sails attached to pressure plates, with backup battery power when there is no wind.

also these steamships would have to have Chinese junk-style sails which would provide free propulsion when voyaging under sail.

Then there is always the hand-crank or other manual cranking as back-up, popular with radios, kinetic flashlights and kinetic watches.
