woman in Gaza is barred from smoking in a café, or walking in public unaccompanied by a male relative. Hamas & other armed groups find the money to buy weapons & ammunition & run military training camps for women & teenagers in place of reconstruction.

This is completely the wrong kind of "empowerment" for women, and anyone for that matter. . .

Why am I not surprised to find this article is from the Gatestone Institute - flagged by Fear Inc. as one of the main Islamophobic groups? (See
Fear Inc. - Explore The $57 Million Network Fueling Islamophobia In The United States

What does surprise me is that people seem to see it is normal that women be part of IDF, but not part of resistance movements against oppression.

I wish that oppression would be ended, so that there would be no cause for resistance movements. The interviews cited show how this oppression is the driving force that brings these volunteers into the training camps. Then I would hope that women would be part of the police, and any formal army, on an equal footing with the men.

Who can be happy to see anyone being trained to kill? But this kind of article contributes to fear and hate promotion, which is what feeds exactly the kind of situations that prevent a just peace from being built.

thank you. empowering women is the answer, but violence isn't the answer. we must do better.

The pro-Zionists must be happy to have this article - now 40 women having been trained in use of weapons can be an excuse for any women & children killed the next time Israel decides to attack Gaza

Evelyn, why don't you comment about the following from the article? This is the type of life many Moslems want to force upon the infidels. We see this in the Middle East, Europe, and even in North America. Evenlyn your comments are welcome (without mentioning Israel or the Zionists).

Women face many restrictions, including not being able to go to the beach alone or even smoke in a public place. In addition, it is forbidden for a woman to be seen in public with a man who is not her husband, father or brother.

Women are also forced to adhere to a strict Islamic dress code in public, which includes a cloak and a veil covering their hair (hijab), especially at university and college campuses and work offices.

The fundamentalist wing of Islam appears to follow the strict Caste system of India, where it's considered abhorrent and a sin to even mingle with someone considered "lower" than you.

These extremes are a variation on the British Class system, where your upbringing and heredity count for an awful lot.

Empowering is also perhaps a double edged sword, as it conveys literal empowerment as well as psychological and/or metaphorical empowerment. The literal empowerment, closely associated with war and battle, is the one that most people reading these news stories will default to. The metaphorical version, that we are all our own masters if we can cultivate the powerful energies within, is harder to work with.

ISIS is possibly supporting Hamas with funding. Actually, there is a high probability they are.

In November of 2014, ISIS was estimated to have $2 billion in assets: 5% from outside donations, 40% from electricity and oil sales, 30% from extortion, theft, and taxes from the newly captured dhimmi populations, and 25% from other sources.

After many moments of “on and off” pondering, I realized the outside donation are coming from Muslims believing THIS IS the Caliphate foretold in Islamic prophesy. I found out in some recent articles that in Koranic scripture it IS an obligation for Muslim to financially support the Islamic caliphate. As ISIS increases and expands in size and strength throughout the Middle East, there will be more outside donations coming in as an important “obligation” to Islam. It will be like tithing is to Judaism and Christianity.

I also realized that, as ISIS conquers more land mass, they are confiscating and controlling the major industries of each seized territory like the Italian mafia did in the early 1900s in the United States.

I also pondered on the “25% other” and came to the conclusion that that probably covered the monies acquired from human-trafficking and kidnapping.

This statistical information came from November’s issue of Voice of the Martyrs. I cannot help but wonder if our U.S. problem of “political correctness” is covering up the MODERN issue of slavery!!! Slavery was never really in the global past. Slavery has been alive all along with Islam. However, political correctness covered it up and turned a blind eye towards its existence in the Middle East!!!

I believe ISIS is supporting Hamas in their conquest in destroying the State of Israel and in annihilating the Israeli population.

David - there is something totally inconsistent in your provision that one discusses events in territories occupied by Israel, or blocaded by Israel, but may not mention "Israel" or "Zionism" (currently the driving political philosophy of Israel) .... It's a way of hiding - or being in denial of - a major part of the root cause for the the training which is the subject of the article!

Ms Noting Commentator makes a good point:
Slavery takes many forms, and there is much of it in today's world. Trafficking in persons is largely slavery - and is found across different religions & cultures. The full number of (mainly) women and children who find themselves "enslaved" is not known - but the tip of the iceburg which we can see is already enormous. There are huge networks - for example, across Eastern Europe (nothing to do with Islam). Last year, a clever set up in the US almost succeeded in entrapping young journalist women in the US through their professional enthousiasm - offering an "opportunitiy" to cover the Olympics - one woman started to question, and the FBI stepped in, uncovered the network (nothing to do with Islam) .... $$$$ drive modern slavery .... and it is big business. Sexual satisfaction of soldiers (whatever army) also creates situations where women are abused .... irrespective of religion. That's why the UN has adopted a policy of zero tolerance of sexual abuse in its peace-keeping forces. A policy needed because there was so much of it ... and still is. Not based in religion but in the behaviour of men ...

How she jumps from discussing slavery to belief that ISIS is supporting Hamas is far less clear - simply her belief without any facts. I can probably guess other beliefs from there ....

ISIS is certainly using the "caliphate" idea as a selling point through its recruiters.

But when are those pushing Islamophobia going to wake up to the fact that by attacking ALL Muslims they are creating the defensive response that leaves more young people open to listening to recruiters? You push them into the arms of the recruiters by the way you, too, selectively revert to quotes saying "Islam is violent, Islam teaches you to kill" - and you reject Muslims wholesale ... marginalise them until the only people left who show "respect" are also those pushing extremist Islam. The recruiters for ISIS must love you - you do half of their work for them ...

These poor women are being enslaved, not empowered. Ultimately, we have to find a way for Israelis and Palestinians to live together in peace.
