Society & Culture  (tags: rape, gang-rape, torture, crime, punishment, society, violence, children, women )

- 3025 days ago -
I just came across a Disturbing story about an 11 year old girl who was gang raped by at least 18 men. I don't want to hear in a couple of weeks, months or years about how any of these men are being let out for "good behavior".

Signed! But considering this degenerate crime occurred in Texas, one of the strongholds of the Christian Taliban of America that endorses stripping women of their rights to control their own bodies, have and are working to redifine rape and call rape victims 'accusers', force rape victims and incest victims to carry an resulting pregnancy to term even it it kills them, delayed the investigation and evidence collection and keep the entire disgusting crime and so far total miscarriage of prosecution and justice out of the news for months; I sure as hell do not expect any better justice than if it were KKK members on trial for a lynching before an all male all white jury in 1960's deep south.
As much as I detest and loath KKK comparisons because they tend to ramp up emotions and shut down dialogue, some times if it looks like a duck in a hood, walks like a duck in a hood, talks like a duck in a hood, then I am sure as hell gonna bet that there is a duck under the hood. I truely pitty the girl and her mother for you can bet they are the ones that will actually be put on trial.

signed, BUT: this petition has probably no chance of being observed because it is not designed /written properly.
The text is addressing us the people asked to sign and not the target. "Sponsored by: me" is unacceptable as well, especially when a signature at the bottom is also missing.
Nevertheless thanks Marta for bringing it on, just wish this important cause would have a correct petition to it.

Ten years in prison is not enough. These monsters sentenced a child to a Life sentence: a life with scars and trauma.

As soon as they get out they will hurt another child. There is no excuse for child rape. Pedophilia has no cure,

Castration is not enough as the problem remains in their mind - they could use any object to hurt a child.

While the male perpetrators should of course be held accountable, it seems to me that the real perpetrator in this, and so many similar crimes, is our whole worldwide culture of misogyny and its distorted view of women.

This global culture cultivates a climate in which gang rape is seen as a male bonding experience, with no significant deterrent being societally enforced.

Nothing in our culture tells boys, young men, and men that girls, young women, and women are anything other than appropriate targets for their aggression, sexual or otherwise.

This is the true criminal. And the real perpetrator who should be put on trial and convicted -- and then completely rehabilitated. Violence will only create more violence. A change of mind and heart is what needed. A far different perception of women, worldwide, is the only way to end the constant repetition of this sad and tragic story.

It's a reality check for me to see that this petition is short of signatures, as my petition about food safety is also short....but there are over 2000 signatures in just a couple of days because a dog was abused and people want justice for the dog.

WHERE is the compassion and concern for our fellow human beings???????????????????

I received this from (where a similar petition has been circulated):

I received this from (where a similar petition has been circulated):
"Big news! After a massive outcry from more than 40,000 members -- which led to news coverage in the Huffington Post, Village Voice, and even London’s Daily Mail -- New York Times public editor Arthur S. Brisbane has issued a strong rebuke of the victim-blaming in a recent article by reporter James McKinley about the gang-rape of an 11-year-old girl and her community's response.
Brisbane wrote said that the outrage was "understandable" and that the piece conveyed "an impression of concern for the perpetrators and an impression of a provocative victim" that "led many readers to interpret the subtext of the story to be: she had it coming.
The apology isn’t perfect -- it decries the lack of "balance," as if the paper should be providing equal voice to the concerns of the victims and her alleged attackers. And unfortunately, while the story ran in section "A" of the Times, Brisbane’s commentary showed up only online, not in his weekly column.
But because the Times is so high-profile, this condemnation still sends an important message to reporters all around the U.S. that readers will hold them accountable for insinuating that victims are somehow responsible for playing a role in their own sexual assaults. And you made this happen."

oh yeah, mom sticks up for her #%$ excuse of a son! What if it had been HER daughter that was raped? The victim had to move!! So these sorry excuses for human beings get to go home, rut away on their wives and girlfriends and stay in their tight knit community?
They should be castrated! Why should they be allowed to procreate? Daddy, can you show me how to rape a woman? I want to be just like you! Big frickin deal if any of them are "family men"..they have destroyed a life! Any woman who stays with them is a flaming rapist's co-dependant!! Cleveland Tx should be razed to the ground.

Fundamentally the number of people that blame the victim is outrageous and it is not just men. We have our females too that the first reaction is why was this girl outside. Fucking nuts and vile. Unfortunately there are just so many men that will put it anywhere.

Deborah L (70)

Already signed petitions for last week. Sadly noted.

These scumbags will not change at this age of their lives it is far to late for that. I hope they get the full treatment that child molesters get inside the joint. I am certain they will enjoy it as much as their poor victim did.

I am also disgusted with the attitude of judges in too many of these cases as well as much of the public that this girl "ASKED FOR IT", as is almost the only answer women have heard since the dawn of time. No one asks to be raped regardless of what we hear. It is a violent and controlling act against women and has nothing to do with sexuality. It is about control.

And the nerve to make the rapists out to be the victims of this 11 year old seductress as the reports I read about this is beyond decency. How they make these adult men, who raped a child, be the victims of their uncontrollable sexual and violent aggressive behavior and attitude toward this victim and place the blame on her?

I guess the only thing, so far, we can be thankful for is that we DO NOT have the stoning death of this poor girl as they do in other places in the world. But the way justice is being rewritten and changed by the radical Republicans in America today, especially if you are a woman, redefining rape, death penalty for having a miscarriage, denial of legal medical procedures, it won't be long before we see the Texas Taliban working harder to make life worse for women, especially when it comes to justice for crimes committed against women.

Life imprisonment, forced hard labour and a sentence of permanent community volunteer work, with them working for their OWN keep and their families - if they have any dependent on their income. Texas - what a disgusting state; their 'judicial' minds are as warped as their laws - seems they don't have the intelligence to apply any knowledge in a responsible way? At the age of 11 it's still a child against men, about 18 - revolting, they group together for their filthy ways.

Its beyond description the repulsion this story stirs in my soul. The idea that 18 men could somehow come to such a common despicable, inhuman, Sociopathic mind set, allowing them to participate in such a lower then animalistic act. Mob mentality, at its worst. It must be a mental illness issue which clearly calls for these men to be separated from society indefinitely.

what a sickening sad story...I hope they find a deep dark jail cell and never see the light of day...furthermore I hope the judge considers at least chemical castration...don't know if it is used all over, but I have heard of at least one case where a man with sexual assault issues was court ordered to have progesterone shots to try and calm his anger/agitation/behaviors -- told it worked okay by people who knew the story better....
this case is so sick I think the punishment needs to be as strong as possible...

Again, I need to say a 'BIG thanks' to all of you.

When I first posted this new, and as the title states, the petition had only 136 signatures. Right now, the number is above 800!

However, as some of you (Angelika R., Lydia S., Carl Gustav J.) have said, the petition needs some corrections to be effective.

Your VERY valuables signatures wont be lost, and we need to send a strong message: rape is not a joke, victims deserve justice and perpetrators the most severe punishment.

Stop the rape-victim-blaming and the "boys will be boys".

Ill send a feedback to the author of the petition and Ill keep you updated here.

My most sincere gratitude :)

Now, that so many people have already signed, the author should NOT change any of the text in the body of the petition; however, recognizing that many people indicate the wrong target, Care2 does allow the author to change it after signatures have been received (reasonably).

You can send a (this) message to the author at the petition by clicking on the author's highlighted name.

I absolutely agree with all others who have voiced concern that so much time and emotion has been placed on delivery of this petition, that it is IMPERATIVE that this be corrected, and it be delivered to the appropriate party(ies)!

WHAT A GREAT BUNCH OF PEOPLE! (Which is why I love it here.)

Thanks, Jelica -- and everyone else who feels deeply enough about the inherent responsibilities of others to PROTECT and recognize the differences of adult primal and selfish responses and childishly immature behavior of acting-out!

To blame the confused mind of an 11-year-old, versus the predatory nature of older males, is preposterous!

Anyone who blames the victim for being raped rapes that victim all over again, the only ones to blame for rape is the evil monsters who commit such a henious crime. I pray to God this child will get all the help, love and support she's going to need, my heart breaks for her as i know how hard it's been for our daughter to cope with the brutal rape she sustained 1 year ago and i don't how this little girl will get through this. My thoughts and prayers go out to her. All rapist monsters should be castrated and put in prison for life without parole. I signed thank you dear Marta.

More disgusting to me than anything is that I sent this to "friends" of mine, who purport to be "Christian," but I have seen NO comments from them.

Carole Sarcinello (338)
Sunday March 13, 2011, 3:58 pm

(Which explains a great deal about my choice to be a non-believer.)

When "disciples of Christ" stand silent while children are defiled, in a way that will, unjustifiably, mark them for life -- I have little respect for their "beliefs."

Carole Sarcinello (338)
Sunday March 13, 2011, 4:03 pm

And, yes, I was a childhood victim of sexual intrusion (by a neighborhood "friend," considered to be a "grandfather figure." I was an innocent child of age 7, skipping down the street to a school, only a block away.

NO! I do NOT forgive those who claim to be sanctioned by God, and living his word, but who do NOT speak out against this outrage.

Carole Sarcinello (338)
Sunday March 13, 2011, 4:07 pm

THIS is why a town in Cleveland, TX feel justified in persecuting the family of an 11-year-old.

They feel the child has behaved in league with "satan." (Why do I keep picturing the ridiculous Salem Witch Trials?)

I respect all those who will publicly RISE UP AGAINST THIS OUTRAGE!

(NO ONE has the right to take advantage -- and THIS cruel degree -- 18 GROWN MALES -- is almost UNTHINKABLE -- of an ELEVEN YEAR-OLD-CHILD!)

And those, who know, but stand silent . . . deserve their own special place in HELL for NOT standing up when faced with a crime clearly against their so-called religion, and the teachings they pretend to uphold from their Christ.

Shame on them! (Their voices should have been the LOUDEST ones.)

I signed a few days ago. This seems to be a real problem for Care2 members who join Care2 specifically for the purpose of children welfare. I care about children very deeply and help as much, and as often, as I can. I think we all do what we can to protect children from harm....but it isn't enough. TY Marta.

Carole Sarcinello (338)
Sunday March 13, 2011, 5:26 pm

Thank you, BarbCat.

There is no real problem for "Care2 members who join Care2 specifically for the purpose of children welfare," any more than there is a real problem for Care2 members who join Care2 specifically for the purpose of animal welfare. There are just two different causes, equally important to the participants.

Just as I devote time to both, I do NOT denigrate either.

Thanks Jelica R. for the link to the petition (I signed it).

There is another one here in targetting 'The New York Times': (to copy and paste into the browser).

Linda B., I already knew about the brutal crime your beloved daughter suffered. I can only say that I wish the perpetrator(s) get the most severe punishment (even knowing that any harsh punishment is enough) and I send love to you and your family.

Just C., its sad to know of what happened to you when you was only 7 years old. I feel sorry.

Compassion for the rapists?. Only if I were stupid (and thats not the case).

David Gould (155)

Firstly it is a shame the little lass has to leave a familiar home and go and live elsewhere in protective custody when her life has been turned upside down enough already. She is probably going to suffer longterm damage from this appalling ordeal that she has undergone and will need the help of family, friends and the skill of counsellors for many years to come.

While I deplore all acts of gross sexual abuse towards any child and would fight to me eye teeth for their future and the aprehension of the culprits we must also observe the legal requirements that anyone however heinious their crime deserves a fair trial and has the right of defence. That is not in any shape or form looking to excuse their appalling crime but ensures that everyone is treated in the correct manner.

If and when they are found guilty then the full weight of the law should descend upon them and the full tariff should be applied. Judges are bound by the tariff rules that apply within their jurisdiction.. We might not like that or feel they are harsh enough. In many cases judges' hands are tied to their tariff requirement. It is the state legislators that we should be addressing much of this comment to and let them know of the anger and abhorrence of ordinary folk to this kind of crime. In that way law is influenced and changed and the tariffs reviewed.

I have to agree with Just Carole that the petition has been rather unfortunately worded and that the target seems wrong.and that causes me a problem with the signing. I have in the last week signed a better worded petition on another site which gave more scope for state legislators to wade in and act to direct the judge by state instrument by calling this 'special circumstances' given the child's extreme youth and the appalling nature of the crime.

Perhaps a well worded letter to your president if he is not too busy breaking all his election promises about Guantanamo Bay might be in order...I am sure a quick note from him would bring the state legislator to heel.

To the Hang 'em and flog 'em brigade who want the state to abuse these criminals or even send them to Iran I would suggest they look up disposals available within the tariffs or campaign to have these changed.

Sunday March 13, 2011, 6:03 pm

David, your words are so kind!

Carole Sarcinello (338)
Sunday March 13, 2011, 6:14 pm

Just because this is so important to me, I will reveal something VERY sensitive to me.

The man, who lived a few doors down the street from me (who all children on my block thought of as "grandfather"), when I was a young child, who molested me.

I had to go (a small child) to the police headquarters, and Identify him on the other side of a one-way mirror.

Within days later, he was released (on bond) and hung himself. And his family marched in front of my home blaming me.

So, yes, I understand.

Carole Sarcinello (338)
Sunday March 13, 2011, 6:22 pm

I was SEVEN YEARS OLD -- and it wasn't until YEARS after that that I even understood dysfunctional desires. (I was totally naive; and couldn't even perceive that me trusted "grandfather," three doors down, was even doing something so wrong.

Now, I have reconciled it all (somewhat).

But, we cannot allow this to continue.

Carole Sarcinello (338)
Sunday March 13, 2011, 6:28 pm

What I see lacking here, is the recognition of women as "whole."

Women are NOT objects to be used, and/or abused, by men.

PLEASE, as much as we can recognize, and respect, the rights of men to pursue and develop their dreams, please allow (and encourage) women to do the same!

As long as we accept the subjugation of women, under the guise of male control, we are guilty of perpetrating inhumanity to an entire sex of humanity.

It is unacceptable.

Just Carole i agree with everything you have posted, i'm so sorry for what you suffered as a seven year old child, like you said you can never erase it i don't think any rape victim can. Thank you Marta for your kind words, sadly no we did'nt get justice for in my country 26% of indicted cases of rape return a "not proven verdict" and our dear daughter was added to that number. Since Dec2010 i have fought the courts the police and all the justice system here for the terrible injustice that was served upon her and for the mass flaws that took place in the trial. It's been a hard fight but i'm glad to say my fight for my daughter has started new investigatons which are taking place at present. I would urge all victims to never give up your fight for justice.

Here is the petition Marta spoke of:

Wake Up, New York Times, and Stop Victim-Blaming!, 1.979 signatures.

As I learned from several articles, girl is getting professional help, she is still in secure house, not in her town. Police is trying to identify all monsters, they estimate 18 - 28 men (from video clip they are not sure how many were involved).

I have the impression that those men are from "good families", and the town blames girl and her mother. I do not think the court will punish the predators with max. sentence. "Good boys", without previous record will get it easy. I won't be surprised if they did similar crime(s) before, and now surely nobody will stand up and speak, knowing how a raped child was treated. I am sure that the rapists will find their match in a jail; being young and pedophiles they will probably have a long line waiting for them.

(I heavily censored this comment to stay within socially accepted limits and not to embarrass my mother with unladylike vocabulary.)

"(I heavily censored this comment to stay within socially accepted limits and not to embarrass my mother with unladylike vocabulary.)"

Just, I am truly so very sorry that you had to endure this, and I wish for you and all victims of this horrible injustice that you will heal and overcome this tragedy.

I have always said, and I believe this holds true until the end of our time- evil has no race, culture or religion- those who perpetrate evil, especially against the innocent, helpless and voiceless and attach any title as justification, do so only in attempt not to be held personally responsible, and no sound mind can accept this.

I think when a person can openly talk about what happened to them , that already says they are true warriors in spirit. Just, you have not allowed them to silence you, and you therefore have the upper hand as you are helping and encouraging others to be brave like yourself.

Linda, I commend you for your continued fight for your daughter, I pray for your success and thank you for your encouragement. My very best and all the love and success to your brave daughter.

That's so kind of you, Marta.

But, as many women (over 25% are, at some time, molested) have learned, it is NOT enough to feel sorry for ourselves. What we MUST do is to make it clear that is is not a small matter.

In my case, it was not nearly as horrific as this girl suffered. And NO amount of conscience-massaging those town people can attempt (such as portraying an 11-year-old victim as being a seductress -- to much older men) will justify the CARNAGE and hell this CHILD will (hopefully, and after many years of psychological guidance) recover from. (Actually, no one recovers . . . they just learn to "cope.")

I, personally am DISGUSTED by the male-dominated government officials who persist in portraying this heinous and grievous act against humanity as trivial.

These 18 lowlifes deserve to have their hearts ripped right out, but giving them life in prison this would at least keep them out of danger to the community. How they have contributed to crush spirit of an innocent child!!!! What reason is there to consider how they will spend the rest of their lives, as long as they don't endanger the community!!!! Shall we also accommodate them with TV and other comforts in prison. Giving them life in dungeon would be an act of kindness. May justice be served in fullness. May God's Infinite Love heal this child as God alone can heal such emotional scars. Prayers for this little girl with all my heart, and with all the love within me.

The abuse and rape of girls and women are horrendous crimes -- unfortunately not dealt with adequately at all in this world / society.

It sickens me that some men think they have the right to violate ....
and somehow women and girls don't have the right to protest, as if we have to be "polite" and "quiet" about abuse.

Signed in utter disgust. I wish I had any realistic hope the punishment these miserable monsters receive will be equal to their crime; unfortunately, my faith in the Texas system of "justice" especially with respect to women and eleven-year-old little girls is nonexistent. Written properly or not the point is made. These humans (animals would not behave like this so humans is even more insulting) should not be allowed to breed and must stay in prison for life. Koo Jo., I totally agree with you. Its supposed by some men (and by a part of the society) that violate women, girls and children is something they have the 'right' to do. And we must be 'silent', 'polite' and even 'grateful'.

But we need to shout out LOUD.

Just days ago, I read about this rapist who raped another rapist in prison!!! I know people change, but that story kinda proved to me that those people NEVER change, NEVER learn from their mistakes and only deserve to rot in prison where they can enjoy "karma"!
Definitely signed. Thanks, dear. *cyber hug*

Thanks to everyone who supported my petition but I am closed it after reading the feedback of how the petition was written inproperly and will not get anywhere. I am very new at this and basically know nothing about petitions, how to write them or what to do with them after they've been signed. My heart was in the right place but I suppose I'm not intelligent enough to do it right. Sorry for wasting your time, I didn't mean to. Hopefully someone more smart will be able to do a similar petition but the right way this time unlike me. Thanks again.

How shocking... but at least now the petition is closed with 1,279 when the target was only 1,000.

@ Chavonne Harvey, just read your comment on why you closed the petition. It's too bad as I found nothing wrong with it, you were just asking people to sign if they agreed with you and that's not a bad thing at all and it has raised awareness of this terrible story.

@Chavonne Harvey: as Victoria S., says, your petition has helped raise awareness (and this is something of VITAL importance!). We only are saying that if it wants to reach a real target (authorities, officials...), then it needs some changes.

No of one is perfect. We al need help! :)

No one is saying you are not 'smart' or looking down you or your petition!

(Sorry for my bad writing...) This is what I meant:

@Chavonne Harvey: as Victoria S., says, your petition has helped raise awareness (and this is something of VITAL importance!). We only are saying that if it wants to reach a real target (authorities, officials...), then it needs some changes.

No one of us is perfect. We all need help! Its difficult each time we try something new :)

No one is saying you are not 'smart' or looking down you or your petition!

And I dont feel I wasted my time with this very important issue.

Hi Marta - I'm so sorry I'm just too late to sign the petition as it is now closed.

Thank you for highlighting this horror and rightly so.

Regrettably yours

Chavonne, you didn't have to close the petition, although it did get plenty of signatures. Believe me, you have put across your view with strength and courage. The petition has been written just fine, and now needs to be sent to Mark Bradshaw, the Chief of Police. Please do not hesitate now. Don't be discouraged by any less than pleasing feedback. I believe there is nothing lacking in your petition. Anyone who has sound conscience will know that this issue deserves justice in complete fullness. I don't see how anyone would be able to rest until proper justice has been achieved. What these evil people have done will not go unpunished, neither by legal roads nor by the law of karma. Please don't hesitate in delivering the petition lest my own furious emotions melt their brains. Well, either way.. may complete and full justice be achieved. Blessings of Love and Kindness, Audrey.

We signed and commented a while ago. We have been saddened by the lack of committment to these sort of petitions. The petitions for animals generate much more action and perceived sympathy and we always sign for animals - but is an animal worth more that a human? Until we recognise this rape for the crime it is - justice will never be done.

Patrica and Edw, I couldn't agree more with what you say. The animal welfare petitions get way too much attention in comparison to the children welfare. It is absolutely appalling how many people undervalue the importance of children and basic human rights.
