Is this something to do with the health care system or the lack of it.

This is really sad. Native Americans were healthy and vitually disease free until the europeans came over, took their lands, pushed them onto reservations and introduced all kinds of illness and disease to them. Those on the resversations live in poverty and live too far away from medical facilites. They are still severly suppressed by our government. It is a situation that should not exist.

This is very sad, and I always wonder how it can be....
It s true that Europeans brought disease, misery, and basically destroyed the Native Culture. They just about succeeded in destroying the Native People. Luckily, this did not happen.
True that Traumatic Stress can stay in generations to come. But nothing can change the past, one can only learn from it.
Nowadays, when most people (on this planet) understand that Native Americans had (and still have) something great to offer.
The article about Ms. Jessica Moore appeals to me. She is Native and embraces her Native Heritage, and on the other hand, she is lving in the USA in 2009, so she combines the best of the western ways and the best of the native ways.
Ín my opinion, the Native Americans were not defeated. Nearly... but look for yourself, slowly, slowly more and more people ackowledge the greatness of the Natives, so actually, in the end, it's not the "white" people who won.

Its the same in canada. More natives getting sick. The govt's answer to this, they sent to reserves, body bags. As a native person, this chilled me to the bone. Knowing that the govt still believes the only good indian is a dead one

Swine flu is killing American Indians in New Mexico at a higher rate than other ethnic groups, the Associated Press reports.

New Mexico so far has recorded 40 deaths from the H1N1 virus. But while American Indians make up 10 percent of the state’s population, they represent 20 percent of Swine flu fatalities, according to the AP.

The AP asked deputy state epidemiologist Mike Landen for possible reasons why this is occurring. The answer, in brief, is that Indians have higher rates of diabetes and poverty, making them more susceptible, and often live farther from medical care than non-Indians.

The explanation doesn’t offer much solace, but it pinpoints structural challenges that NM’s American Indian population confronts.

As sad as this is and as disgusted as I know we all are with the government's response, we can all take comfort from the fact that those true humanitarians at Goldman-Sachs got their vaccines, that our dedicated public servants in Washington(who only ever have our best interest at heart) got their vaccines and that top quality health care is readily available to our many fine corporate lobbyists. We can rejoice that our problems are being discussed, however briefly, in committee by people who actually understand them at least 10% of the time and who will take action on our behalf at least 0.5 percent of the time. Truly, even though some of us find it suspicious that Swine Flu is killing Native Americans at a higher rate (and after smallpox blankets, can you blame us for being paranoid?), we have ever so much to be thankful for. Although politicians and corporate whores do not understand sarcasm, I am sure they understand how lucky they are.
