There are two important reasons for having a strong social safety net, one based in sound economic policy and the other in our common humanity. So it's no surprise that the countries that have strong social safety nets tend to have resilient economies->

Sure, why not call the public option by another name. The strategy could benefit Democrats struggling to bridge the gap between liberals in their party, who want the public option, and centrists, who are worried it would drive private insurers out of business. While much of the public is foggy on what a public option actually is, people understand Medicare. It also would place the new public option within the rubric of a familiar system rather than something new and unknown.

Now that's change I can believe in! This is what Obamacare should have been!

That is exactly the point - give the Hans a big balloon he finally got something right. Yes, do drive the private insurance out of business.

Though I have doubts that the public is as "foggy" as you would have them.

Ah, we have a little friendly bantring around here today, eh?
Noted with interest... there's too much "compromising" going on to really count on things improving right now.

Dennis Kucinich pushed the Universal-Single-Payer-Medicare-for-All when he ran as a Democratic Presidential candidate for 2008. He was the only one pushing it & the Ins. Industry made sure he got nowhere in the media. Hillary tried this present law back in the 90's & the "forced" buying of Ins. was what killed it then. Unless they can side-step Private Ins. altogether, I fear the RepubliCON picked Supreme Court WILL break down the Healthcare "Reform" in place. The present law is flawed, making it too easy for nut-job Tea Partiers to take pot shots - fix it with REAL Reform: Medicare For ALL!!!

Yvonne, you are too young to remember all that. Who are the "nut-job Tea Partiers" that you refer to?

Now is an excellent opportunity for liberals to push what Amercans wanted all along and that is medicare for everyone.

The "Public Option" was set up as a distraction from day one. It was never for the public and never an option. The distraction worked. It kept people from pushing single payer thinking they had to "compromise". It worked. Don't fall for it again.
John Conyers is re-introducing HR 676 single payer in the House again. He was supposed to have done it last week. We can't let this go unnoticed again. Doctors and nurses wre arrested all last year fighting for us. Look what is happening in Egypt...the trun out is inspiring! So what about America? Do we care like they do in Egypt?
We need to stop Obamacare and push single payer HR 676.

Thank you for the post Kit. It ain't over until it's over...when we have true government universal healthcare. NOT mandates that criminalize people who cannot afford it.
Obamacare has to go.
Expanded Improved Medicare for All!!!
Expanded Medicare for All is the ONLY cost effective option that will cover ALL Americans PLUS their dental, eye care and prescription WITHOUT costing $1 trillion. It will actual save Americans $1 trillion! It is not radical, it is Medicare expanded to all.

Single payer !!! If companies can't compete let them go over seas where many of their employees are or go out of business. That ol stagidy of their going out of business is just B,S. and we all know it. If they can't survive.aren't satisfied, with fair profits then so be it.

Amazingly good. it really is past to to have super conservatives naming good bills with cruel lies. The insurance companies won't go out of business, they'll adapt just as they did with medicare and medicaid. They will find a way to turn it to their profit, I have no doubt.

So what kind of Society do we want to be? so far it is not looking good.

True Jill, we seem to be a society of me first. We also are one that should be violently angry about what has been and is being done. The republicans know this is an opportunity, but not one to do as they have done, rather an opportunity to set things right. This is an acid test.

that is what the healthcare reform should have been....universal coverage for all paying only what and if they can afford to for it. is the fair, and right thing to do.

Thanks, Kit. Sorry I can't send you or Jae another star yet. One can't pursue or hope to find happiness without adequate, affordable health care.
