Last Wednesday night, Sept.16th, Rick was arrested in
San Francisco, badly beaten by the police,
and is now being held in San Francisco County
Jail on charges of unpaid fines in Alabama.
I don't know how many of you know Rick, and
his wife Chellie. They are both dear, sweet,
compassionate, spiritual people who have been
thrown into a horrible situation.
The San Francisco police stopped him on the street
apparently because they didn't like his looks. It's
the way they've been treating Hippies there for 45 years.
Please pray for Rick, for Chellie: Light a candle, burn
some incense, meditate, whatever your faith or belief
system would have you do.
Thank you so much for your help.

Omg, Tim, I'm shocked. They are both wonderful people. What an unfair situation.

If you get the chance to speak with Rick & Michelle, plz, send them all my love. They are both in my prayers. Sending all things good their way.

Peace & Love.

So sorry to hear this. My best to Rick and his wife. Hope that he will be alright and all will be resolved soon. A shame that if you have a badge, you can do what you want, when you want and to whomever you want. Something like that happened to my nephew not long ago. A minor in posession charge, (He's 20) and he ended up with a bump on the forehead, with bruising, bruised jaw and a black eye....Disgusting. Sending good karma Rick and Michelle's way. Thanks Tim.

This is horrifying. I may not be able to access Rick's Page, as there have been a lot of Care2 glitches recently. So please, Tim, give him my wishes for recovery from injury and for safety for both him and Chellie, if I can't reach his Page.

Your information, Tim, is shocking and sickening to hear. I am so so sorry to hear this has happened to Rick because he is labeled a "hippie" or that he is homeless. It scares me so much that we can all live together in the richest nation in the world, and STILL have NO TOLERANCE for our fellow man!!

And if, in this time of a HUGE recession, where there are soooooo many people not working, losing their homes, dressing in whatever clothing they can find, and wandering the streets for their next meals...we can't show some empathy & compassion (esp. the police!), then I don't know what kind of people we are becoming. No wonder people around the world hate us! They can see how we treat fellow Americans...let alone strangers from some other country!

I haven't had the chance to make friends with Rick or Chellie until now, but you can be sure that they're in my prayers, and those prayers are with tears for what they have to endure for just being true to themselves. great sadness & deep prayer, Kat

This is truly a shocking and sad situation. What is so fearful about this, is any of us could lose a home, lose everything with the economic and job situations as they are now. I also know all too well how you "look" many times gives those that like to judge something to judge about. My thoughts and prayers are with him and Chellie. I am sure she has to be terrified.

The more winters I've lived it seems the less compassion I see in an overall general way.
I'm not sure what fines he hasn't paid, but whatever they are for, it certainly doesn't cause for his being beaten. After all we have those who are still receiving bonus monies and bail outs for money they did not handle correctly....don't see any of them in jail.
So many people today are having a hard time putting food on the table and a roof over their heads, I'm sure fines, for whatever reason, are on the bottom of the list. These fines are also getting ridiculous. I recall a time when a parking fine was about $5 now one must take out a small loan to pay for the fines. Then the people get arrested, jailed, and in this case beaten because they can't or have not paid a fine. To be poor in this Country is beyond hard, this Society comes at you from so many directions, to be Middle class is now a place that is harder to hold on too. But the Lying Corporate Theives don't seem to be missing a beat.
Although I do not know this family, my prayers go out to them.

I just took a visit to Rick’s care2 page. It seems his mission in life is PEACE.I am so sorry to hear about this horrible ordeal. Anyone who views this as fair justice,is sadly in need of help themselves!.......two wrongs will NEVER make something right!....although I've had no personal contact with either of them..".A stranger is maybe the friend you've yet to meet"......some of the kindest honest & most helpful people I've had the pleasure of meeting have been proud to call themseves "Hippies"!.......& "you can't judge a book by it's cover".....I pray that both will be given strength & courage to see them through this present challenge.....& that they will remain peaceful thoughout may prove to be a very strong learning curve for many people....who will perhaps realise"there but for the Spirit of truth & love go I" .They will remain in my thoughts & prayers until they are once more back on freedoms path....bless them!!

Katrin, ty for the forward, ty Tim for the post, this is disgusting and so like worldly people to treat someone this way 'because I don't like the way you look'
hmm that could be America's motto
if Chellie has a page, can someone post the url, we can support them both with invites, as well as prayers, they need us!
good to see you again Tim, I always miss your posts!

why does everyone assume they know what happened? ever seen an episode of cops. people get irate when questioned and arrested. odds are, if you remain totally passive, you won't get beat. maybe he was drunk. we have no clue. i think most police officers do a good job considering the extreme danger of their work. can you imagine having a target on your back every day. i hope rick learns about himself from this experience and makes a positive change in his life. and if it is police brutality, then i hope he gets justice.

There are many wonderful police brother in law is one of those. He is on the gang task force in Memphis Tennessee.. I trained for Desoto County Ms. Sheriff Deputy reserves and I will tell u Catherine that there is rarely if ever any call for beatings from police.Since my son is a firefighter, and his father is assistant Chief of the local fire department here,my precious long time friend of over 30 years is a paramedic ,her son is a police officer for a city in Ms. That means I know lots of police and they are wonderful dedicated loving people that have been on the force for many years and they do not beat people when they arrest them ..even when they are obnoxious and combative.
Blessings and healing to Rick and his wife Chellie..This is outrageous behavior from a Police Officers in my opinion.

If you don;t know Rick, nor his good work, then you have no reason to say he deserved to be treated in this fashion. Nor does anyone else for that matter.

Thanks so much for sharing this horrible "happening" & this on our international day of PEACE !! Even though i donīt know either of them, i feel great empathy ...& just a lit a candle for generally more understanding & peace in your country...I canīt believe how americans have started to treat fellow people ...this used to be very different, i remember a time where people would watch out more for one another, & they didnīt judge people as much as they tend to do it now( i observed this while i was living in the U.S.A. in 1983 for about a year)..from what i hear thru friends living over there & what we all keep hearing thru the news.AMERICA used to stand for freedom of expression, the land that makes all dreams come true etc... What happened to this dream? Iīm afraid itīs stagnating, if itīs not gone forever... I feel much compassion for everyone that dares to step out & isnīt afraid to express his true values & opinions! THANKS KAT & PASTOR TIM FOR PASSING ON THIS MESSAGE-YOU CARE (!) & THAT`S WONDERFUL! Kindest regards, Susanne Tyler

Susanne....Sadly the decline in human nature doesn't solely apply to american as a nation.....daily....we ALL have an equal capacity to excersize a good or bad attitude......the one we excersize most becomes the strongest.....the media delights in bad sells better..... & people will I hope always rightly speak out against wrongful attitudes!....& if this is done in the right way it should ensure that vengeful or vindictive people can no longer hold a position of trust!.....& Justice will be seen to be done!.........but as faith has so rightly pointed out there are many acts of tolerance & kindly compassion which on the whole get forgotten or ignored.....a word of encouragement & support would raise morale& lead to even greater effort on the part of many who strive to do their best....often under very difficult circumstances!
But this indeed applies to people in all walks of every nation under the sun!

I too say No weapon formed for them shall prosper against them and that soon they will be back together. Being homeless is scary and loney I know for I have been there. People look at you like your the scumb of the earth. But you know what your not!!! Your heart is the same you bleed the same and hurt. I got lucky and found a friend on the job my boss and his wife took me in. A mobil home barley enough room for them but enough room for one more person. This will happen for Rick and his wife too and this is my prayer for them. And the cops who beat them I hope they find themselves in the same shape so they will know how it feels. Thanks Tim. And tell Rick and his wife that many prayers and Blessings are on the way for when people pray things start to happen.

I deeply appreciate the response that
this has been recieved.
I'm going to print this thread, and I'll
be mailing it to Rick Tuesday morning.
If anyone would like to send a card or
letter to Rick, here's how to address it,
and where to send it:

Richard Lell
C Pod/ Cell 007
Inmate #2436802
San Francisco County Jail
425 7th Street
San Francisco, Cal. 94103

I will do my very best to keep you updated
on this. The State of Alabama has 30 days to
decide if Rick will be extradited. Any real
updates on Rick himself, how he is, how he's
doing will be slow in coming. Chellie is only
allowed to visit on weekends.
Again, deepest thanks to all for the prayers,
the candles, the love & compassion that is going
out to Rick & Chellie in this thread.
Peace, Love & Blessings be with you all,

Rick and Chellie, I will pray for you both and I am truly sorry for what the ones who "Protect and Serve," did to you. (They are surely building up some bad Karma for themselves)I am 62 and have never been beaten up, or even hit...I thank my God for that. Tim, it all boils down to you know how much Tim needs to pay off his total fines? I would imagine that is the answer to a long jail term? Does he have a Public Defender? Hang in there, it will all work out. SOMEONE GET CHELLIE TO SANCTUARY!

Tim, I will pray for both Rick and his wife. That situation is deplorable! Someone who lives in or around San Francisco should contact the ACLU on Rick's behalf. I visited his page and noted that he has 7 children. Are they with his wife? If you talk to them, tell them to contact Covenant House and they will take them least the children. IN THIS COUNTRY, IT IS DISGRACEFUL FOR PEOPLE TO HAVE TO LIVE ON THE STREETS! I will put them on my prayer list and please keep up updated on how they are doing. Thanks Tim.

Why did this happen? Is being poor, living on the street or looking like a hippie a crime? Instead of picking on the poorest in that country the police ought to fight some real crime, like the ones that put people in these hopeless situations in the first place. I feel that the 2 tiered society of the USA cannot be sustained for much longer and sooner or later the disadvantaged will lash out. There will be anarchy. You cannot push people down forever, karma will eventually bring things into some sort of balance. In the meantime, I wish these two innocent people courage and strength. May the love of this community sustain them.

Sorry to here this. Sometime bad things happen to good people.
On the other hnd I grew up in SF and was a hippie, went to many be-ins in the park where the police joined in the music and fun. They never bothered me once and I still love SF and it's spirit. Long live hippies,Peace and Love!

I'm so happy to see that Chellie has
been able to check in on this thread!

I feel a need to stand up for her, and
defend her against the charge of being
"a deadbeat mother", which she is NOT. This was
almost 2 years ago that she was in jail. I was on the phone
ALOT with Rick, helping him through that period as his pastor,
and I can tell you that the charge that landed
her in in jail was trumped-up by her vindictive ex.
She was cleared of the charge and released.

My friend Phyllis mentioned that she could see this
happening in Richmond, but not in San Francisco. It is
my understanding that the San Francisco police are very
aggressive and hateful toward the Hippies and the "street
people", and Rick & Chellie have been among their number.

Roy, I know what you say is true, because R & C have told
me good stories about some police officers whom they
encountered in Golden Gate Park, and were very good to them.
In every city and small town, we have good cops
and bad cops. That's just a human thing, but of course, it
does not lessen the outrage of what's happened to Rick.

I am at a loss for words. I wish I had the means to help them personally. All I can do is hope for them better days. Know one deserves this kind of treatment. I wish them all the best.

Big change is still needed in our country/planet. The Police State is becoming more and more a reality. We all need to take notice on all things going on around us, get away from tv, text messaging and a whole lot of other distractions and be the voice of change.

The Prayer of Jabez..."Oh that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me and protect me from evil...and that I would cause no pain." Thank you God. I pray this prayer at least before going to sleep and any other free time I have when I'm not being occupied by other responsibilities. God bless you. Spencer for Peace... Forgive others...and yourself...

prayers are a nice THOUGHT, but what these people and many more around our nation need are people who are willing to make phone calls and write letters and emails and use their PHYSICAL powers and resources rather than the mystique metaphysical for real change. that's the way our society works unfortunately.

call the san francisco police dept, the governor's office and start using the network of friends you have in political and other influential places to DEMAND that this stereotyping and police brutality CEASE AND DESIST immediately. everyone's talking about health care reform, what about GOVERNMENT REFORM?

Thanks Tim. Noted. I can't leave them a message (cannot access their page), but please send them my best. They are both in my heart and thoughts. This kind of thing is happening more and more-so saddening.
