This is horrible that a shelter in the US would let an animal suffer in this fashion! Fiends!

Thanks, Sweetie, for bringing this all-too-common sadly to our attention. This poor dog needs a miracle and I hope that it gets one. Miracles are happening, just check out the Miners being rescued. Maybe a miracle can be sent to help this poor baby. The horror of this dog being just left to suffer is astounding. Did the shelter ever think of putting an article in the local newspaper so that the dog's owner could know where the dog is and rescue his/her pet?

I am upset by this- it was a tragedy that she was hit by a car, but that the "shelter" is not doing anything about her injuries, not looking for her owner, that is pure cruelty. She may have escaped from a car, or run away. But even if she was abandoned , she should not be on a "death list" Couldn't some vet donate a bit of time to help her injuries? I hope some members in that area can help.

Wish I could donate some money but lost mu Job a few weeks back and had to borrow money today just for gas. Poor cute dog, but looks abit thin. Thank goodness at least they gave him some pain meds. A few days a go, in Italy, a cab driver ran over and killed a dog, and, of course, he did not stop. BUT, this dog belonged to a young woman, and her boyfriend assisted at the scene of the accident. This guy chased the driver (on foot), pulled him out of the car and beat him into a coma.
A lesson he'll never forget, if he survives. :P

Noted and thank you Laura .
Sad that a animal rescue would allow the animals coming to them who are hurt to suffer like this. We have a animal recue league in my small city but they give medical treatment to all the animals and spay and neuter them before they can be adopted. How can these people call themselves a rescue when they are not rescueing these animals they are torturing them.

People need to be aware of the roles that shelters and rescues play. Had this dog been taken directly to a rescue (a specific dog rescue, the humane society, etc) she would be getting the medical care she needs NOW. Rescues usually work to help each other out AND are associated with a vet that will give them discounts and possibly work out payments so an animal is treated humanely. A shelter, on the other hand, is simply a temporary place to store animals until a) their owner claims them, b) they are adopted to a home, c) they are dispensed to a rescue organization, or, most frequently, d) they are put to death. Whether the person who dropped off the dog at a shelter did so out of desperation, ignorance, or stupidity, there is no way of knowing.

The fact that a rescue is trying to get her means the shelter probably won't put her down (providing they keep an eye on her and demonstrate the money is being quickly raised in good faith.) It's sad the shelter can't just hand her over, but the rules which are hurting her were meant to protect her. Silly they couldn't make an exception for a (I presume) recognized/established rescue group.

Her best bet is to get her story on the local news in the LA area. If the public and public officials are aware of the issue, politics will probably pressure a satisfactory ending. We can only hope so!

Blessings, Beautiful Girl!!

P.S. For those of you who ask in your comments about notifying a German Shephard rescue group or where to send money to help, the article makes it very clear that such a group is trying to help her. The link to their fund page is also included in the article!!

Thanks Sophia for bringing this sad story on and I truly hope there will be help on time for that beauty. At least she gets medication for her pains. It's good to see how several people here are spontaneously opening their heart and purse, let's hope their donation will indeed benefit this shepherd or even any other one and not be used for other purposes. Sorry but after hundreds of petitions here for shelter animals I have gotten suspicious about"rescues". I find it strange how the article praises the "excellent work" of what it calls "high kill shelter" and in the comment section some suggest that shelter is breaking law by not providing the necessary vet treatment.

I live in Kentucky, so I feel helpless. I have 4 dogs, 3 of which are rescued from probable euthanasia or death. I can't afford to donate, but one would hope that someone who is looking for a German Shepherd will visit that shelter. I am appalled that the shelter is not calling in a vet to assist them with her injuries. If they did that, it would make those who visit that shelter feel that any animal given to them would be treated humanely & not just given an execution date. I don't agree with time limits for dog euthanasia. As long as there is room, there should be no death camp attitude. I would gladly donate to a shelter that was no-kill, whether it be my time, or my talents, or my treasure (money), but some of these shelters sicken me.

My last boy (Australian Shepherd, Collie mix was on death row, when I saved his life. The NEWS MEDIA caught my attention when they said they were housing 40 Boxers for a court case & having to euthanize the oldest inhabitants. When I asked them to hold him, the woman at the shelter was absolutely nasty to me. She said they don't save dogs for anyone. I had until 2 p.m. to get to the shelter to adopt him. Sounds like he was going to dog heaven, so I am happy that I rescued him, even though he has to be separated from my 2 other boys, because he want to be the ALPHA MALE. He has a great personality & has the characteristics of Houdini, (he escapes), so I keep him inside most of the time, with weekly roaming rights to the 1/2 acre fenced in area with my female Golden.

I hope someone gets this pretty girl out of the negligent s-hell-ter.

Read & noted. I will also keep this poor dog in my prayers. If those people cared about animals, they would get her veterinary help!! Did they even bother to scan her for a microchip!? Surely, that beautiful dog has, or had, owners, who may want her back, but not know where she's at!

Cruelty is so unnecessary and in LA? With all the money that they have in that area? Someone surely can afford to help this animal back to rehabilitation. You might want to learn the lesson from the Pasco/Tri-Cities community in WA state as last year, a chocolate lab was found, having been dumped in the country, with multiple injuries, many broken bones and starving! The people in this community took it to a vet's office at the local university. They began to rehabilitate the dog, preform multiple surgeries and the community began supporting this dog by requests to adopt and financial support! This dog was save and rehabilitated and given to a wonderful, loving home! WAKE UP LA! You have lots of money in that area and someone there can help these animals!

What I can't understand is why the owner is not frantically checking out all the shelters and animal rescues s/he can find... I suppose it goes without saying this poor dog has not been micro-chipped? Otherwise she would have been returned already? I am also wondering why a dog like this was out alone on a busy road. Could the owner have turned her out?
For those who do not understand the difference between a rescue and a shelter, I urge you to read Jan C's post (above).
Thanks to Sophia, Laura, and Catherine- read it on yr facebook wall.

Noted & posted on FB. Also sent some money toward the cost's of her vet's fee's. If everyone just donated $5, it would soon add up. I sincerely hope she makes it to theatre and then finds a kind forever home...she sure deserves it...bless her.

Jan C, thanks for that post as it is information that we all need to know.
At least someone dropped her off at an animal care instead of leaving her to die on the side of a road/hwy, so that is a plus to it all.
2,500 is outragious for the surgury in the first place but that's how it goes all to often for animals who need medical care...their owners can't affort the cost all to often and they must let them be euthanized. All just too sad. Hope this one makes it with help from the public attention she is fortunate to have. So many others don't and that's also sad. Just hope that at least this one makes it ok and that she will soon be united with her 'family' or a new and loving home.

I don't undesrtand why there is not SOME way that animals like this can't be helped immediately. SURELY there is SOMEWHERE that they can go in a situation like this. It is terrible that there is no provision for animals in dire straits like this. If it was happening here in Australia, I could try and get help. If I were a vet, I would get enough money to live on and after that I would spend all my time giving free treatment to animals. Sophia, God bless you for this post and I nope and pray that enough money can be raised for this darling dog.
