Bush Attenpting to Gut The Endangered Species Act

Environment  (tags: endangered species, Bush, environment, environmental impact, development, logging, US wildlife )

- 3843 days ago -
BUSHco wants to hand over regulatory powers in the act to federal agencies to determine if development, logging or other activities would negatively impact endangered wildlife. No independent scientific reviews by qualified biologists would be required.

Imagine allowing those morons in federal agencies to oversee this! UGH...most of the ones in charge are bimbo-brained appointee friends of politicians anyway! Science and reason will be flushed down the toilet and all those big boys with chainsaws and dredges and earth movers and dynamite will chop hack, dig, and blow up our fragile ecosystems for PROFIT. And as we kill off one species after another, the effects will form that famous domino chain all the way down the line...

Just another example of the Bush Administration changing the rules when it can't get its way on an issue from Congress or the American people. Just reflects how far out of balance our checks and balances system is and the need to have Congressional oversight on such rules is SO appreant here and on numerous other things as well. Thanks Cate!

Yes, I too would call the proposed changes illegal. Federal agencies decide? No, that is just wrong. And what's the urgency here? Proposed immediately? I'm very suspicious, I know there are ulterior motives.

This news isn't really anything new. bush has been trying to log Tsongas National Forest for yrs, and yrs, but he didn't get what he wanted. And I hope he doesn't get his way this time either. We all know the mess the BLM has made with our forests. I can hardly wait for this moron to leave office. bush is the only president in my entire life who has actually scared me. I heard this on NPR this morning -- typical Repug move. When they said (DeLay and his fellow thugs) they wanted a "permanent Republican" government, the plan -- and it is working and will continue to work for a long while methinks -- is to keep the government bankrupt whenever they are in a position to do so thus leaving the opposition with no funds to do anything . . . Plus all the political hacks installed . . . da Supremes . . . Thety have created a government Everybody is starting to loathe -- so they win, eh?

I saw this post on Alternet and I thought it was pretty right on.

We have all decried for years what BushCo has done to the Constitution, the peace we knew, our privacy, but in the end, it is only WE THE PEOPLE who can either stop him or work around him. Well, thanks to Pelosi and Reid, stopping him is not an option, so we better learn to work around him. This means taking back the authorities he takes away by taking them on at the state level. It is called active sustainability and it demands a rethinking of how we govern ourselves.

Thomas Jefferson had it right all along! We need to establish what are essentially independent republic-states who make laws that recognize the rights of all living things to co-exist and to protect our planet. If enough states are willing to follow CA's lead and challenge Bush environmental and Constitutional assaults by making laws that exceed federal controls or do not recognize those controls within their jurisdictions, we might stand a chance of creating real, lasting democracy in this nation.

For this action that he is taking, start local actions that set up endangered species protection laws within your home communities and counties and states. Check out - Center for Environmental Legal Defense Fund

on how to do this. Then work to protect the animals and nature in your areas from development and claims of eminent domain by local bought-and-paid-for politicians. Vote in this November people to Congress who can help support these local, sustainable efforts, vote in city councils who understand sustainability and self-governance issues, and offer the displaced scientists homes and jobs within your new local authorities to do what they do best - protect science and nature.

In short, devolve federal authority. It is what the Republicans claim they want, so let them have it.

If they want to gut Federal laws, put in place local ones that you can control to replace them.

If they want to violate international laws, then let the international community deal with them as the war criminals they are, and demand that the next president surrender them to the World Court on January 21, 2009!

Make your governors call a new Constitutional Convention, with or without the Congress, as they are allowed to do under our current Constitution, and make sure that the new Constitution is not subject to the whims of corporations and political hacks like Bush, Cheney, and McCain et al..

Let's be realistic - it is easy to point the finger at the Republicans. It is harder to point the finger at growth and development caused by both wealth and illegal immigration.

Who doesn't want to be wealthier? How many of us consume less, rather than more, resources the more money we have? I spent fifteen hundred on solar reflective panels.

Who opposes illegal immigration and practices family planning? I have no children, and plan on one child and adoption.

How did he even become President? That is what I want to know! Because there is no way I believe that many people voted for him. Twice. And look at all the idiotic things he has done while in office! Ye G-ds when will this madness end? My friend Nick and I had a good talk about this the other day and I mentioned that I miss Clinton being president. So Nick said yeah he got impeached for getting -ahem- 'serviced' and lying about it. Yet Bu$h does all this stuff and keeps getting away with it! Then he pardons himself for any 'potential' war crimes he may have commited! Enough is enough (a long time ago). Impeach this sorry joke of a president and put him in prison where he belongs for all his crimes against humanity and the planet.

"The draft rules would bar federal agencies from assessing the emissions from projects that contribute to global warming and its effect on species and habitats"
> he added. “It is not possible to draw a link between greenhouse-gas emissions and distant observations of impacts on species.”

If approved, the changes would represent the biggest overhaul of endangered species regulations since 1986. They would accomplish through rules what conservative Republicans have been unable to achieve in Congress: ending some environmental reviews that developers and other federal agencies blame for delays and cost increases on many projects."

The most chilling parts of this are the first part of the quote and this comment

The press is full of the impact that climate change is having on "species" as he puts it so bluntly.

But if for you the whole point of nature is to provide you with the fun of pointing a gun at at and murderering it then this atunes well. But for all of us here on Care2 this is just a licence to go out and kill whatever they want provided they make a profit for them and their shareholder. They forget that we are all stockholders in the world of nature...and what they ultimately are destroying is all of us.

Bush proposes loosening protections of endangered species. Sure, species extinction is a bad thing, but is it as bad as, say, not having a wastebasket made out of real ivory? That's the position of the Bush administration, anyway, which lifts restrictions on killing and trading endangered species. But at least it's only foreign animals. Who cares about those animals in other countries? Evil act Evil details Bush said it! not me .

It is not fair that only the people of the fedral agency get to decide whether any process is endangering wildlife. Well, there should be a provision wherein the fedral agency should mandatorily consider a board comprising of qualified environmentalist and other such persons. The fedral agency alone has no authority to authorize any process regarding these 'wildlife endangering processes'.

"Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne said late Monday that the changes were needed to ensure that the Endangered Species Act not be used as a “back door” to regulate the heat-trapping gases linked to global warming."

In other words, the changes were needed to ensure that the Endangered Species Act not be used to prevent conditions that endanger species survival.

The only thing we can thank W for is that he has exposed (and purposely exploited) every weakness in our checks and balances. We were sitting back thinking we had it covered when along came W and laughed at us and took us for the ride of our lives. The thing that is really frustrating is that what he is doing MANY, MANY Americans are against but it doesn't matter he does what he wants and there has really been no truly successfull opposition. Never before have I seen a president show such clear disdain for his subjects.
