Melamine-Laced Foods From China May Be Contaminating the World Food Chain

China, on of the largest exporters of food and food ingredients, apparently has been more than lax in enforcing its July 2007 ban on melamine as an additive in animal feed. Since the formula scandal, China is taking further steps, but...

...there are some in China who say that melamine is still being sold to animal feed producers and used by individual farmers, who are feeding melamine scraps to their animals. From the article:
"...several [Chinese] farmers and melamine scrap dealers said in interviews last year that melamine had been used for years in animal feed, particularly fish feed. Many melamine producers said they believed that melamine scrap was nontoxic and would not be harmful to animals or humans."

What absolutely enrages me is the in the US, the Food & Drug Administration has established "safe" levels for melamine in all foods except baby formula, in which, they say, no level is safe. Why are we allowing ANY chemical such as melamine, which causes kidney failure (probably by producing crystals in the kidney which clog them), to be present in ANY food?

In a related article, Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.), head of a House subcommittee that oversees FDA funding, criticized the agency for saying there could be safe levels of melamine in foods. While other countries throughout the world, including the European Union, are acting to ban melamine-contaminated products from China, the FDA has chosen to establish an acceptable level for melamine in food in an attempt to convince consumers that it is not harmful," DeLauro said in a statement. "Not only is this is an insult to consumers, but it would appear that the FDA is condoning the intentional contamination of foods."

I am outraged by the threat of people being sickened by and perhaps dying from eating foods that our corrupt, uncaring, incompetent government allows on grocery shelves.

I already do Faith! I no longer trust our government to have its citizens best interests at heart--I haven't for decades. It's all about the money to them and to our corrupt corporations. I trust local farmers and ranchers way before I trust ANYTHING OR ANYONE in a government agency. Plus I grow my own produce and herbs. I try very very hard to not purchase anything that isn't made in America. Sometimes there is no substitute I can make so I either HAVE to buy that item or (like I mostly do) I do without it altogether. But I am only one person and have extreme self-discipline. Wouldn't it be something if the majority of this country did the same? We would wield immense power as 'consumers' then!

So, according to the article, "a child would have to consume two dozen eggs a day for harm"? Did those sickened infants consume two dozen eggs a day each? If these people are going to lie, and they are, why not at least make it believable?? They are saying we're stupid, but once again, "we" can't make these decisions, it's the government. And for anyone who hasn't voted, take heed: incumbants are the ones ignoring us!! In my opinion, they have ALL worn out their welcome by ignoring us and blocking our emails, so they need to find employment elsewhere. And to hell with China, we can live without them, and live better. Thanks, Ombretta. Hope your Halloween was SPOOKtacular...

I am so tired of our government allowing this to happen to us. I am also tired of having to read every label to make sure it is not from China. Noted with anger and disgust. Thanks Cate.

Now that the entire world is fully awakened to China's poisonous 'fuel' isn't it time especially for North Americans to just STOP BUYING ANYTHING MADE IN CHINA and to continue to press our representatives to do the same.
Surely we will all be healthier and happier! In the meantime keep checking those food lables, toy labels, any and all labels especially toys.
Christmas and Chanukah are just around the corner and we cannot put our children at risk - PLEASE READ THE LABELS AND WHEN IN DOUBT THROW IT OUT!
Thank you :-)

I don't believe, or hardly believe....have trouble believing that we will be buying our food from almost anywhere soon. I think we are going to be in so much trouble . . . we are going to have to buy locally. You know, a financial market doesn't just mean money. The market is everything we buy. It is a Market with a capital M. It is ALL in trouble. Because it all has to be paid for....the people who pack, who ship, who pick, who unpack, etc. Everything money touches is in trouble, and that is Everything with a capital E.

Good excuse to demand American made. And we do have to DEMAND it from our government to employ people and to protect Americans (which employ even more americans). Time to look out for us. Sounds like a seperationist but this country needs to grow and get back to number one in production of all the things that have been sent out of our country.

Here is the problem, my dear friends: China exports INGREDIENTS used in everyday foods as well as foods themselves. That box of pancake mix isn't going to tell you that the egg powder listed in the ingredients is imported from China. The shampoo bottles that say "Made in US of US and/or Imported Products" doesn't tell you what country sold them the products they used. Kellogg's isn't going to put "Made with malt syrup imported from China."

Currently, even if our current country of origin labeling laws were rigidly enforced, no American company that buys foreign ingredients but manufactures the product here has to list the countries of origin for the ingredients.

Terrie, I too hunt for products made in the USA. It's astoundingly difficult, often, to find children's toys that are made here that aren't wooden. I spend hours on the web when I shop for Rick's grandchildren's birthday and Yule gifts.

There is much to be said for returning to growing your own food as we are fortunate to do...but it is still worrying...what if they are tampering with the seeds..what with GM and so forth...

As a wood worker I use melamine as a sealant for NON FOOD USE comes with a list of instructions about what to do if accidentaly ingested including calling the doctor...

Simple question...why are doing buisness with a country that puts this poison in foodstuffs...or are we owned by them now? Didn't they just Bail out the world banks or was I on planet Zog at the time?

We are slowly being poisoned by our so-called friends, the Chinese and our own governments who don't seem to give a crap either. I wonder if our governments realize that this kind of poisoning is costing money, precious health care Dollars, Euros etc..
Beware...MADE IN CHINA...Beware...Made in USA, Canada, Germany etc. etc. Things are being made in our countries with poisons from China. It's damn scary.....BEWARE!!!!!!

Cate, your well written words,
China exports INGREDIENTS used in everyday foods as well as foods themselves. That box of pancake mix isn't going to tell you that the egg powder listed in the ingredients is imported from China. The shampoo bottles that say "Made in US of US and/or Imported Products" doesn't tell you what country sold them the products they used. Currently, even if our current country of origin labeling laws were rigidly enforced, no American company that buys foreign ingredients but manufactures the product here has to list the countries of origin for the ingredients.

Cate, I agree..., and I wonder if we can come up with our own test kits for everything we eat and use. It is at a point where there is a possibility that this could exist in our products that we consume or use. The people can't trust the manufacturers anymore, well I know I sure don't, heh. Very noted, and thank you.

There is a certain aspect of Xenophobia in this thread I do not like. The cause of this problem is not because Chinese people want to poison others, but because corporations, very often AMERICAN corporations, that operate, manufacture, and produce goods in China find they can do so more cost effecitvily. The enemy is not the Chinese people as a whole but rather sociopathic economics and the sociopath parasites that run those corporations.

It is not only China. As consumers we must always pay attention to our food and all of our products. Governments, companies don't care, they only have one goal: money and how to make more money. Here in Europe we have problems with the use of the maximum of pesticides in our food. In the Netherlands are different and strict amounts that are allowed, but the other countries like Spain and so on are allowed to use 14 times more pesticides into their food. So, I only buy food made in Holland as much as possible or in Germany. Oranges, grapefruit and all the exotic fruits are imported, because they don't grow here because of our climate.
And Cate is right: the INGREDIENTS are not mentioned in the labeling.
So: raise your voice and write to the government or your Ministry of Health Department and demand safe products! They have children too...

We can not blame anyone else for what we put carelessly into our own atomics. We do this to ourselves. I do not want you all to worry to much about what we did yesterday, What are we going to do now we have this information?
I must tell you that you do not need much food to keep you alive and well.We eat fare too much. Bringing harm to ourselves. The green grasses and oils from the seeds, are full of Protons from the Suns rays. This is energy. Just a little capfull night and morning will help you cut back on your bulk eating. You will find that you eat less and less each day. All those wanting to get yourselves well try the hemp seed oil which will help repair your damaged cells. Remove the cancer cells and gives your immunity system a boost. Grow all your own herbs and be careful what you buy! Love Janet.

China and other foreign countries must be held accountable and have strict higher standards before the U.S. does any business with them. It is our government's responsibility to keep our food safe for humans and pets. We, the citizens, must hold the government responsible and place more pressure on our officials.

The way things are going, growing your own may be the only way you can ensure the food you eat is safe. Got room in your yard for a garden? Use it. It could save your life.
I saw on TV where eggs in China had melamine in them from the feed fed to the chickens. Now, think about that. We buy feed additives and other grain products form China. Do you really think that anything you buy at your Super Market is "safe"? That's why I ride (a bicycle) 10 miles once or twice a week to a local farmer to buy eggs and in-season produce that's genuinely organic; no pesticides, etc. What's sad is that the closest farmer who is an organic grower is 10 miles away! Even buying local and organic is a problem. You have to work hard at it. But, if we all refuse to buy "crap" food, and buy from local producers, our numbers will make an impact on their bottom line, which is the only thing that has any effect on the profit seekers.
When it comes to clothing, etc, it seems that everything is made in China, or some other foreign country, never America. How do yo fight that? Once again, do it yourself, or find a local person who would love to have a job doing anything including sewing and tailoring! Encourage them to work for you, and maybe you can get them started in the direction of running a local business which will provide a local source that more and more people are looking to buy from.
We can fight "the corporate machine". It will just take some ingenuity and persistence. It also might require participating in an underground economy. If you learn to barter, there's no provable taxes to pay.
I have been considering paying the local farmer I buy from, to plant the produce I will buy from him every year; a sort of contract. BTW, canning your own food is really easy.
Also, when you consider that our "leaders" (arrogant) think that we are "useless eaters", you quickly realize that feeding us melamine, other toxic substances, drugs that kill, and food that has little nutrition from factory-farmed fields, they don't care if you live or die. With this understanding of kind of "leaders" you have, will you allow it to happen, or fight back?
