We need your support! The University of Windsor administration has determined that it will close the Centre for Studies in Social Justice this July 1st, 2013. This decision must be reversed as the Centre is a unique, vital and vibrant hub . . .

Exactly, Kit! It's sad when a university -- responsible for educating awareness and knowledge -- decides that this avenue is unnecessary.

Sadly the Canadian government is following the US down austerity road. From the number of classes offered to nonrenewal of contracts for teaching staff, they are cutting up the best of the country, education.

Got that right, Angie!

I don't think it's coincidental that programs that benefit and increase the knowledge of women, elderly, young adults, children and the poor are being the first cut (on all levels) whenever manufactured "austerity" becomes the excuse.

To me this center is probably the MOST IMPORTANT part of that university, for the well being of not only canada but the wider world cummunity. They might have or will get more moved forward than the UN. Social INJUSTICE is what this world is suffering from, almost nothing else!

Noted, Avaaz petition signed and shared on FB. What is a university for if it doesn't encourage the students to be aware of social problems and sometimes critical ? Imparting/teaching facts/knowledge is for up to highschools !

Thanks to all of you who recognize that we MUST defend all arenas championing/advocating social awareness and activism against injustice.

"Through its commitment to social justice the Centre actively develops public forums on timely themes such as the environment, citizenship and democracy, security and exclusion, human rights, globalization, social movements, and the state of democracy. The Centre bridges the worlds of academia and activism; promotes education, action and advocacy; and enriches our communities through public engagement. In short, the Centre is committed to actualizing the University’s responsibility as a public institution.

Given the University of Windsor’s mission statement: ‘enabling people to make a better world through education, scholarship, research and engagement’ (2010: 8), it is perplexing that the administration has deemed the Centre for Studies in Social Justice to be of no value. "

Thank you, Angelika, I would send you another Green Star if I could, but I already have sent one for the day!

It is easy enough to send the AVAAZ Petition, and I would also recommend joining them, it's effortless.
AND, If you have MORE time and interest, please take a look at the e-mail addresses - which are on the link TO the Petition.
These go to the University Administrators and are bound to have an impact....

Thank you for your letter expressing concern about the closure of the Centre for Studies in Social Justice at the University of Windsor. The University made this decision after a careful review and in the context of budgetary constraints which necessitate finding more effective and efficient ways of supporting research. I do appreciate that not everyone welcomes this decision.

In this case, the University decided to move away from the provision of base-budget funding towards a model in which funds are made available on a competitive, University-wide basis to stimulate research projects. Thus the Research Stimulus Fund was created under the auspices of the Vice-President, Research, and in partnership with Deans, and it will be available to faculty members on a competitive basis. In addition, the Strategic Priority Fund under the purview of the Provost and Vice-President, Academic will also provide opportunities for developing strategic initiatives related to social justice.

The funding for the Centre does not fit this new model, but I can assure you the current academic programs emphasizing social justice, including our Social Justice Ph.D. in Sociology, Anthropology and Criminology, and our M.A. in Communication and Social Justice in Communication, Media and Film, will continue and that social justice research projects and initiatives throughout the University will continue to have our full support and encouragement.

Sincerely,
