I have a sneaking suspicion that the competition hired someone to put this horse out of commission. I agree with you, Terry, should they find the cretin which I fervently hope, there will be no just punishment under most animal abuse laws. But please, we don't want the good Mr. Ortiz to get into trouble.^^ Although, if someone would hurt my animals....don't even want to think about it.

How sad, who would want to hurt such a sweetheart apart from a competitor?

I agree with Iris sounds like another horse racer did this because they were scared of the competition.

Don't forget the woman who had her horse killed...for the insurance money

How a person treats an animal is a glimpse into their soul. God bless this horse. Chances are, she is going to end up in Mexico to be slaughtered. People in this business don't think an animal is worth anything unless they are making them money.

I understand that some people think these horses are too young to race before a certain age. Could this have anything to do with it? I don't know anything about horses so was just wondering.

I will never understand how anyone can hurt an animal. There is no excuse. I hope with time this pretty girl will be able to get over what happened to her.

This is just so sickening that anyone could do this. Reason is clear - it's someone who doesn't want to see the horse race. Granted I don't want to see horses racing - but for very different reasons. This is someone who's threatened by this filly. Poor girl will probably go to slaughter now. :( Poor girl.

This is an incredibly horrible thing to even imagine. However this is what we have allowed the world to become. There needs to be harsh punishment for anyone who would harm a defenseless animal. As far as I'm concerned no punishment could be harsh enough to satisfy my feelings about this inhumane treatment. My prayers will be with this innocent horse and hopefully though she will not race she will be able to enjoy a normal life grazing in a pasture allowing her to perhaps forget the pain, injustice and indignity she's suffered. Animals have rights. It's amazing that humans can cause them so much suffering yet they continue to offer unconditional love. Shame on us for not acting to punish those who would hurt an animal.

The big question here is why would anyone want to do this in the first place. Very Sad

OMG...Simone I think I just threw up on my notebook about this news story of such horrid abuse.

Praying for this special filly's recovery, and noted with falling tears of such sadness for the horrible abuse she went through.

May they find this SCUM BAG and may they ROT in a SEPTIC TANK full of PIG #!#@!!!

I noticed some people hoping she isn't put down and even speculating that the motivation might be insurance money, but the article did mention that she will be kept now for breeding, so neither of those appears to be the case; as far as any devious motives, those would also come into doubt, considering that the article mentioned that the family owns a stable and a number of other horses.

In any case, I wish nothing but the worst for whoever did perpetrate an act like this. It's been documented that people who would do something this sadistic to an animal could eventually escalate to the point where they would thoughtlessly harm a person, too.

If they're caught, even if they get a light sentence, which is likely, maybe they can be set up with a cellmate who loves animals...
