A gator bit off the hand of Everglades air boat captain Wallace Weatherholt last week while six tourists watched onboard. The captain was apparently feeding the gator marshmallows, a second-degree misdemeanor in Florida.

I live in Florida and heard all about this last week. I am SO angry because this man is SO stupid and an animal had to lose its life because o him. What a dummy.

What a hard, horrible lesson to learn. This poor man was probably trying to impress these tourists, but nature took its course.

It was his fault not the gator.
Someone may need to give this guy a helping hand.Lets hope he learns by his stupidity

Crocs and gators have been around for some 200 million years, humans for less than a million. Why they killed an animal that was only doing what it was designed to do - remove useless things from the Everglades - is beyond me; I'd have left the gator alone except for snapping pictures from a safe distance. This donkey's bum should be permanently banned from the area and be required to pay for his own care, for being stupid about gators.

Should we euthanize the gator or anything that resembles a gator like they do with pit bulls????

The gator was killed because of the stupidity of the airboat captain. I hope they reattach his hand backwards. The article also mentions more idiots, someone was bit by a gator swimming in a fresh water creek. Are you crazy? It's mating season right now and never swin in fresh water where gators may be present.

Irrelevant question - who knew gators like marshmallows?

"The captain was apparently feeding the gator marshmallows, a second-degree misdemeanor in Florida. Unfortunately, Florida Fish and Wildlife officials killed the gator to retrieve captain Wallyís hand." Typical. A guilty human cost an innocent animal its life. Wally put his hand where it should NOT have been.

....The gator was later trapped by officials from the State Nuisance Alligator Program.

So who traps the Human Nuisances? If we would stay out of their habitat, they probably wouldn't be eating us! Stupid humans.

He knew better and still chose to do it. He got what he deserved. Sorry the alligator had to die because of his stupidity.

OMG -- this story moves me in SO MANY DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS at the same time...

Bottom line, though: The cap'n should NOT have been feeding that gator, and definitely the gator should NOT have been killed! Did they really think that hand would've been viable after being roughly ripped off and residing in an alligator?

The poor gator died so the captain could entertain the tourists. Well, he sure did. Give that guy a hand!
