"Tell the truth." Max Hastings, an eminent British journalist and historian, has done that in a book that is a painful but perhaps inoculating re-immersion in what Americans would prefer to forget.

“Vietnam: An Epic Tragedy, 1945-1975” is a product of Hastings’s prodigious research and his aptitude for pungent judgments.
Except Johnson’s intentions were often self-serving.

In 1964, he unnecessarily sacrificed truth and, as an eventual result, young men to achieve a 44-state landslide, which was won three months after confusions compounded by lies produced the Tonkin Gulf Resolution’s limitless authorization for warmaking. Eight years later, President Richard M. Nixon twisted military strategy, diplomacy and the truth for domestic political advantage — while cruising to a 49-state romp.

On Page 752, the book’s concluding words are Boomer’s: “It bothers me that we didn’t learn a lot. If we had, we would not have invaded Iraq.”

Thank you Wilde for the article at site. That War was EXTREME SORROW.

Today, so many Vets are HOMELESS, SICK and still suffering ~ sadly, IMHO the GOVERNMENT never did zippo for them.

I will never forget thinking in high school I was happy to be a WOMEN since my draft # was UP!.

Would dearly love all of the GOVERNMENT'S DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS and lies to come out, but sadly "me thinks" it would be a HOPE & A PRAYER!

What a war. Sad to think of all who died and still suffering from this.
What our government has done to so many during and after the war is a real disgrace.
Wish they'd stop the evil wars. Take care of the people.
Thanks Wilde

The point is we learned little from and went on to invasion of Iraq under false pretenses. What Will pointed out which isn't always mentioned is the faked Tonken Gulf incident and the 1st election(after acquiring via assassination) with a Goldwater soft on communism assault lead to a big election victory via bombing North Vietnam. The invasion of Iraq didn't hurt Bush much either rather may have helped.
