Pony attack leads to safety fears
Stable owners in Kent are fearing for the safety of their animals after a pony was mutilated in a brutal attack.
The 15-year-old animal, called Folly, was in a field with two other horses when she was cut with a sharp object in Preston, near Wingham, last Sunday.

Her owner, Christine Fenton, said the pony had been subjected to a "horrible, violent, disgusting crime".

Local residents are now campaigning for a rural police patrol to boost security and safeguard their animals.

I can't rest. I feel as though it's completely invaded my life

Mrs Fenton said since the attack she had been monitoring the field every hour, while other people in the area had also been keeping a watch.

"I can't rest. I feel as though it's completely invaded my life," she said.

Vet Megan Young said the attack would leave Folly scarred for life.

"Physically she will recover over the next few weeks and months. Mentally, whether she's going to get over it as quickly remains to be seen.

She added: "Animals generally are remarkably forgiving.

'Challenge strangers'

"They don't forget things like that but handled by people she knows and trusts I think she will get over it, but she's always going to carry some marks."

Mrs Fenton warned people in the area to be vigilant, and to challenge anyone they see in a field who they do not know.

A Kent Police spokeswoman said policing rural communities was a key priority for the force.

"As part of our neighbourhood policing plans we are assessing resourcing levels in all communities... in order to provide improved police coverage across the county."
