While political parties are losing members and voter turnout is sinking, Germans are discovering direct democracy. Their referendums, such as this Sunday's on Tempelhof Airport, are beginning to make life difficult for politicians and the business

There is this direct democracy in Holland and in Austria! Like in Switzerland!
Not in Germany! And there will be no direct democracy in Germany!
The special case here is obvious the airport of Berlin Tempelhof will be gone! If the politicians want to close it they close it even if all citizens of Berlin want to keep it open! They have had their voice at the election! Now they have a government that will close it! Its that simple!

TO KEEP THIS OLD AIRPORT FOR STORICAL REASONS ONLY, IT DOES NOT MAKE ANY SENSE. HISTORY MUST NOT BE KEPT IN STONE AND STEEL UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. BESIDES, THIS AIRPORT WILL NOT BE NEEDED ANYMORE HERE IN GERMANY. I AM THE OPINION THAT NOT EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF HISTORY MUST BE KEPT IN A MATERIAL WAY.

Thanks Elisa, Maria, and all who noted and commented. This story was passed on to me by "AB L." so I can't take the credit for finding it, but I've certainly learned a lot from it and from the comments, so the credit really does go to Elisa for posting it.

German people stand up for an old useless airport. But for their own political interests they stay mute.

Let's turn "representative" democracy into direct democracy, everywhere! The Greeks of ancient Athens were able to do it (though they excluded slaves and women) - I am sure we, the people of the modern world, with all our education can make direct democracy that includes everyone! : )

Hi Simon!

It works and if you ask me the representative democracy had its best times!
The people power is gone immediately without direct democracy somehow even the greatest green politicians like Joschka Fischer seem to adapt as soon as they are in control! Capitalists, communists, socialists as soon as they have the power they are all the same! For the election after the election just compare how they change....thats why all important issues should be decided by the people like in Switzerland and in Austria!

But in Germany, as the philosopher Karl Jaspers complained, the fathers of the constitution were apparently "afraid of the people."

And, this is EXACTLY as it should be!

"Where the government fears the people, there is Liberty.
Where the people fear the government, there is tyranny."
-Thomas Jefferson
