The traffickers-police connection is so strong in parts of the country that traffickers scout freely & children rescued from brothels & bonded labor are often victims again. Save the Childhood Movement estimates children account for 40-50% of all victims

Ugh. This is just so reprehensible. These traffickers, and the police, were children once. How do human beings become so monstrous?

I didn't know how bad things were for some children in India. For what we consider nothing, maybe a $20 dollar bill, generations of children in a family are forced to be bonded slaves without any rights or education and the debt can never be paid off because the clever business man keeps adding high interest. The law forbidding this practice is ignored by politicians and police. The only leverage I can see is American corporations employ many Indians, so there is an economic power that could be used to "influence" India to honor the law and their children and contribute to some kind of social services agency that would make loans without using children as collateral. I'm haunted by a story I read many years ago about a man who lost in a game of cards and the only thing he had of sufficient value was his recently married wife and he was felt forced to hand her over as a bonded slave to the man who won the card game or he would be killed. The "businessman" put her to work in a brothel where she earned many times over the small amount owed. She was released many years later when she was no longer marketable and unable to have children. The husband complained that she was just a shell of a person and just sat and stared into space. Evil traditions in a society end only when people demand they end, and the government and the police and the courts obey the will of an enlightened people.
