For two years, a hard-won moratorium on mining has protected the Canyon, but the ban is now set to expire. If the federal government doesn't renew it, a "Uranium Rush" of mining would permanently scar the face of this unique and priceless land, ...

I hope because I can. I persevere because I must. Our Mother Earth is too precious, too fragile, and our life's essence which must be protected.

Please send your letters through Avaaz.org on this campaign - from anywhere in the world where you may be.

If you haven't already done so, you may also sign petitions here on Care2 and Change.org to help this campaign succeed.

Noted & signed, of course!

It would be a great, great tragedy if mining is permitted in this region!

I despair, I really do! Humans are mostly utterly venal and corrupt - all they care about is money and status (and votes, which in turn means status and money).

My comment:
It would be a global tragedy if this most spectacular and marvellous region is threatened or destroyed by mining - all for the sake of short-term financial gain! PLEASE, please protect the Grand Canyon for many decades and leave the last few unspoiled wildernesses in peace!!!

"Only" another 308 signatures needed on the Care2 petition, guys! Please forward if you haven't already done so!

Unbelieveable that anyone would wish to destroy such a wonderful place, once it is ruined it can never be replaced..... As usual greed and money are far more important than saving our beautiful planet!!!!! Thank you Suzanne for the posting and all that you do.Liz

Thank you for the article and bringing it to the attention of many more. Suzanne, I signed the same a couple of days ago and emailed you to this effect. Same organization! If nuclear plants are not to be built in the future, why do we need uranium? Despite what has happened in the past, some politicians still want more nuke plants. It's ironic! During the presidential election Sen McCain didn't want radioactive waste transported across Arizona. What about uranium leakage? Also, some Arizona politician has proposed low flying airplanes to fly over the Canyon. The repeated vibrations from airplane motors or leaking oil from them could also seriously damage the brittle rocks and walls. Bob Ballard, discoverer of the Titantic, has his doctorate in geology. He can be reached thru Woods Hole Oceanagraphic Institute. A quote I read this AM "Conscience is a man's compass" Vincent Van Gogh. If this is true, Congress is surely lost. We will be too if we let this happen.

I hope it works, but the GOP and tea-partiers here have fangs and foam at the mouth so I wouldn't count on any help from them. John McCain and John Kyl are also indifferent and useless, but the Grand Canyon is worth the time and trouble to the rest of us sane, level headed folks! Thanks.

My letter to Obama and Salazar excerpted:
I am a native of Arizona with, perhaps, a more personal stake in what you decide to do with respect to uranium and other mining. I grew up overflying the canyon and the lands beyond every weekend, in my pilot-father's restored bi-plane. I know how it looks at sunrise and at sunset, I remember looking for the spots of green at the bottom of the canyon and how the Colorado smells and sounds from down below. Not everything in America should have a price tag, in the case of the fderal government, a price tag far too low and completely disporportionate to the potential for irrevocable harm. Not only must the current moratorium be extended, it should be made permanent.

Don't destroy what nature creaded. Like I have mentioned this could be part of a Faultline and making extra holes for mining could trigger unwanted happenings.

We are living in a World of ruthless thought and everything that has taken place upon this Planet is what it was to be for this Planet is of the experience of higher understand of self and for the experiment we will either be enhanced to move into another segment of our lives going home to the other side where we will have that same replica of Planet Earth but in Beauty of Love and Prosperity of self worth.
That is why everything s coming to an End here on Planet Earth starting with Mother nature taking control of her Planet cleansing ever element that has been destroyed..Planet Earth is one of the lowest in levels of energies and not until we wake up everyone of us and complete our destiny of why we came back to do what we do to others in the name of Love.

Thank you all and big hugs of appreciation to everyone noting, signing, sending letters and passing the message for others to take action with us.

I know that sometimes it seems repetitive to be asked to sign or send in more letters, but that's what it takes to get our message to "those with the power" to do what needs to be done. I'll continue to create petitions or whatever we need to do to keep sharing actions until this fight is won ~ Mother Earth is depending on us! :)

"I am not a citizen of the United States, but wish to point out that the Grand Canyon belongs to the whole of planet Earth, and I have as much interest in it's future as any citizen.

Be assured that once mining starts it will be the thin end of the wedge. Just as in law, once a precedent is set everything changes in the future."

Re: Asian On-Line-Sellers.
Asian consumerism is killing and choking the planet with its non-lasting junk. Products from China and other Asian countries are cheap due to lack of quality (product & craftsmanship). The products break down quickly, thus more products are “needed”. Landfills, not only in their country but also in the West grow alarmingly and are part of the downfall of the environment. Asian products are known to contain harmful chemicals and are permitted in the West due to “international” agreements between their and our government in view to support the economy overpopulated countries.
The continuous input (into the Earth) of harmful chemicals damage and pollute drinking water and all global waterways. Did you know that China’s drinking water is one of the most polluted water in the world? The West has enough to deal with their own pollutions and we don’t need any more in “help” from foreign countries.
Furthermore, buying from such sites you support violations of Western Copy and Patent Rights. China and alike are lazy and continue to steals ideas and designs from the West. International Copy/Patent Rights mean zero. Fight such cost millions and ends in a no-win situation.
Buyers know Identify theft is mushrooming. PayPal is only secure to a certain degree, once your name and address is in foreign hands you and your family are free game; your info will be re-sold repeatedly.

Support your local economy, your friends and neighbours!
P.S. Care 2 member warned that it is difficult to escape these sites, you MUST respond.
Care 2 members: to fight this Asian invasion on-line selling, flag as inappropriate & write your comment; it will go to Customer Service of Care 2. This is a site for people who care about the world not adding more junk to landfills.

We HAVE to get these politicians in check. They are supposed to be representing us and all they do is take bribes selling their votes to the highest bidder like corner whores. The Grand Canyon is in A National Park. It belongs to the nation's people not these *ssholes who are in office. I have signed this petition and many others but they do what they want regardless of the public's wishes. The corrupt Supreme Court let the dogs off their leash and they are biting the hands that feed it. The far right nut cases have taken over and everything is for sale, ( us too.) We need to get that amendment to keep corporations from buying our politicians. You see what is going on. WE HAVE TO STOP IT!!!!!!!

Regarding the close relationship between the US government and corporations: I read the below excellent article today at Common Dreams. The friendship between the political and economic elites is now becoming a real threat to society and nature. There is something terribly wrong with the greedy mind of these people. They seem untouched by any emotion and willing to destroy any life form in order to make money. As I read this article the elites intends to increased their domination of society and exploitation of nature. Be aware: the CEO of General Electric is now Obama's economic adviser. GE is the world's biggest corporation, and producer of Nuclear Power Facilities. They designed the fatal Japanese Fukushima nuclear reactors. In spite of this dreadful accident, Obama recently gave his support to build more Nuclear Power facilities. And of course, GE helped to have Obama elected. So much for change!

Obama's Fatal Corporate Addiction
by Robert Scheer

If it had been revealed that Jeffrey Immelt once hired an undocumented nanny, or defaulted on his mortgage, he would be forced to resign as head of President Barack Obama’s “Council on Jobs and Competitiveness.” But the fact that General Electric, where Immelt is CEO, didn’t pay taxes on its $14.5 billion profit last year—and indeed is asking for a $3.2 billion tax rebate—has not produced a word of criticism from the president, who in January praised Immelt as a business leader who “understands what it takes for America to compete in the global economy.”

What it takes, evidently, is shifting profit and jobs abroad: Only one out of three GE workers is now based in the U.S., and almost two-thirds of the company’s profit is sheltered in its foreign operations. Thanks to changes in the tax law engineered when another avowedly pro-business Democrat, Bill Clinton, was president, U.S. multinational financial companies can avoid taxes on their international scams. And financial scams are what GE excelled in for decades, when GE Capital, its financial unit, which specialized in credit card, consumer loan and housing mortgage debt, accounted for most of GE’s profits.

That’s right, GE, along with General Motors with its toxic GMAC financial unit, came to look more like an investment bank than a traditional industrial manufacturing giant that once propelled this economy and ultimately it ran into the same sort of difficulties as the Wall Street hustlers. As The New York Times’ David Kocieniewski, who broke the GE profit story, put it: “Because its lending division, GE Capital, has provided more than half of the company’s profit in some recent years, many Wall Street analysts view G.E. not as a manufacturer but as an unregulated lender that also makes dishwashers and M.R.I. machines.”

Maximizing corporate profits at the taxpayer’s expense is what top CEOs are good at, and after all it was Immelt who presided over GE when it got so heavily into the subprime mortgage business that it needed a government bailout to avoid bankruptcy. This was before Obama made him a trusted adviser.

Back at the end of 2008, Bloomberg reported that the U.S. government had agreed to insure an additional $139 billion in GE Capital’s debt holdings, the second such intervention within a month, adding, “The company’s exposure to the deepest financial crisis since the 1930s has cut its market value by more than half this year.” A Washington Post exposé titled “How a Loophole Benefits GE in Bank Rescue” documented the power of Immelt’s lobbying operation in Washington. GE was not initially deemed eligible for the debt guarantee program offered to failing banks, “but regulators soon loosened the eligibility requirements, in part because of behind-the scenes appeals from GE.” And it worked; as the Post reported, “The government’s actions have been `powerful and helpful’ to the company, GE chief executive Jeffrey Immelt acknowledged.” For the next two years, GE would still report enormous profits without paying taxes, adding insult to the injury that financial shenanigans had inflicted on ordinary taxpayers who bailed the company out.

On Feb. 6, 2009, Immelt sent a contrite annual letter to GE shareholders, admitting, “Our Company’s reputation was tarnished because we weren’t the ‘safe and reliable’ growth company that is our aspiration.” While conceding his own culpability in GE’s downturn, Immelt predicted a rosy future: “I accept responsibility for this. But, I think the environment presents an opportunity of a lifetime.”

Not, obviously, for the 50 million Americans who have either lost their homes or are deeply underwater in a housing market that is still in steep decline thanks to the lending practices of companies like GE Capital. Nope, the good times are in the offing only for corporations that know how to make the U.S. government a partner in their scams. As Immelt stated blatantly: “The global economy, and capitalism, will be `reset’ in several important ways. The interaction between government and business will change forever. In a reset economy, the government will be a regulator; and also an industry policy champion, a financier, and a key partner.”

That’s the essential blueprint for Obama’s restructuring of the economy, as the president put it in selecting Immelt to replace Paul Volcker as head of his outside team of economic advisers. Volcker had become increasingly critical of the corporate high rollers. Obama, although noting the suffering of ordinary Americans, clearly believes that such populism is now beside the point. As the president put it in announcing Immelt’s appointment on Jan. 20, 2011: “The past two years was about moving our economy back from the brink. Our job now is putting our economy into overdrive.”

But overdrive, with CEOs like Immelt shifting the gears, is what brought us so close to the brink. Once again Obama seems fatally addicted to the notion that the heavy hitters who got us into this mess are the very folks to be trusted to get us out of it. What he seems incapable of grasping is that while they are personally very good at avoiding the precipice, the rest of us are hardly passengers in their limos.

BLM Extends Public Comment Period for Northern Arizona Proposed Withdrawal Draft Environmental Impact Statement by 30 Days.

For Immediate Release Contact: Chris Horyza, (602) 417-9446
Dennis Godfrey, (602) 417-9499
Date: March 29, 2011

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) today announced a 30-day extension of the public comment period for the Northern Arizona Proposed Withdrawal Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The study is a comprehensive environmental analysis of the effects of withdrawing public land north and south of the Grand Canyon from new filings of mining claims.

The Federal agencies involved had allowed 45 days for the public to comment on the Draft EIS. Because of numerous requests, the agencies are extending the comment period by 30 days to May 4, 2011. The comment period was due to close on April 4.

No additional public meetings will be held during the extended public comment period. The Draft EIS assesses the environmental, social, and economic impacts associated with the withdrawal of lands in the Grand Canyon watershed. The wit hdrawal would affect uranium and other hardrock mining.

Under the study’s Proposed Alternative, the BLM would withdraw more than 1 million acres from location and entry of hardrock mining claims for 20 years. The withdrawal would not affect mining claims with valid existing rights.

The Draft EIS and other information are available at http://www.blm.gov/az/st/en/prog/mining/timeout.html.
The preferred method of commenting on the Draft EIS is by written submissions to the email address NAZproposedwithdrawal@azblm.org. Comments can also be mailed to: Bureau of Land Management, Arizona Strip District, 345 East Riverside Drive, St. George, UT 84790.

The BLM is the lead agency in preparing the EIS. Other cooperating agencies include the National Park Service, the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Geological Service, and multiple local and tribal organizations in Arizona and Utah.

Information on this and other BLM Arizo na projects are available on Facebook at www.facebook.com/blmarizona

The BLM manages more land - over 245 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.

THANK YOU, SUZANNE.. I signed of course. And thank YOU, Anja and Jytte, for your thoughtful comments. ANJA, I could not agree with you more. Just last night I was watching "Journey to Planet Earth" on PBS -- all about exactly what you're talking about. Just go to any "dollar store" to see mountains of cheap Asian-made plastic googaws of every description. Tacky, toxic, flimsy crap. Manufacturing this crap uses precious energy, releases toxic byproducts, boosts global warming; then it's transported across oceans, using more energy.... THEN it's thrown away almost immediately to "plastify" our waters and soils. TRULY a LOSE-LOSE SITUATION. And then they have the unmitigated BALLS to advertise right in the middle of a discussion thread about healing the planet. OH, GRRR and GRRRR again.

Lines from a movie about the Grand Canyon:

You ever been to the Grand Canyon? Its pretty,
but thats not the thing of it.
You can sit on the edge of that big ol'
thing and those rocks...
the cliffs and rocks are so old...
it took so long for that thing to get like that...
and it ain't done either!

It happens right there while your watching it.
Its happening right now as we are sitting here in
this ugly town. When you sit on the edge of that thing,
you realize what a joke we people really are...
what big heads we have thinking that what we do is gonna
matter all that much... thinking that our time here means
didly to those rocks.

Just a split second we have been here, the whole lot of us.
That's a piece of time so small to even get a name.
Those rocks are laughing at me right now, me and my worries...
Yeah, its real humorous, that Grand Canyon.
Its laughing at me right now. You know what I felt like?
I felt like a gnat that lands on the ass of a cow
chewing his cud on the side of the road that you drive
by doing 70 mph.
