A secret in the brain

The typical symptoms of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) involve inflammation or pain in joints and muscles, often accompanied by fatigue. But such symptoms are impossible to measure, so FMS is often misdiagnosed as a form of arthritis, or the patient is told the pain is imagined.

In the e-Alert "Get Real" (3/2/05), I told you about rheumatologist Daniel Clauw, M.D., of the University of Michigan, who used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to examine the area of the brain that registers pain. The images revealed an increase of blood flow when FMS patients were given low-pressure stimulus. The identical stimulus showed no change in the brains of control group subjects.

The next step in Dr. Clauw's research was reported in the December 2006 issue of Current Pain and Headache Reports. In a review of neurobiological studies that examined pain, brain activity, and genetics in FMS patients, Dr. Clauw and his University of Michigan colleague, Richard E. Harris, Ph.D., confirmed the presence of abnormalities within central brain structures in subjects with FMS. Genetic research supports the theory that inherited gene mutations are the most probable cause of FMS brain abnormalities.

I have suffered from Fibromyalgia for years and I am glad they are finally doing more in depth research on it. I know I am sick but its one of the invisible diseases and its hard to get others to understand how bad it can be on a body to have to cope with this day in and day out.. TY Crym

I have battled the disorder only to have many tell me it was all in my head. NOW that there is a thermal pattern that is ONLY present with Autoimmuse/Fibromyalgia, I NOW can focus on finding out more of this VERY REAL condition. I will post as much info as I can find. Thanx for all your comments

oh it's not considered in your head here in Ontario I was diagnosed in 199 and M.E. as well then. They have had tests for this for the tenderpoints for years but it's painful, this is not painful or invasive (sp), nor is M.E. aka CFIDS although doctors don't like to have patients with it and are very ignorant about it, even thou declared neurlogical illness here. I thought the brain scan was interesting as well, someone sent that to me some tim eback

Its good for you that u r in Ontario. I hav had to EDUCATE the so called PROFESSIONALS on this issue! We should trust what WE KNOW AND FEEL, not just what the doctor THINKS because he does not know enough about the condition. Thanx Sunshine!
