The Sochi bears need urgent medical care. Since they were tiny cubs they have been held in cruel captivity in a restaurant in Sochi, Russia. One of the bears is completely blind. WAP is working to bring them to The Romanian Sanctuary. Sign their petition.

Very happy to read the comment from AneMae that the bears already are on their way to rehab!

Thanks AniMae - It may have been my fault since I received an e-mail from World Animal Protection with a petition link which I immediately signed and shared here but they did say that The Brigitte Bardot Foundation was doing all it could. I Tweeted several organizations and celebrities before posting here, too. I will check back with WAP to see if they have acknowledged this yet. Thanks again. After the elephant and then gayal dying yesterday, this is at least a little good news but Four Paws knows of very many bears being kept like this and being fed vodka and beer and going into early alcoholic and 'stir-crazy' dementias.

Rosie, sorry I forgot to thank you for the petition! I was so happy to read that the bears were getting help that I just wanted to forward it! Bears are beeing caged for their bile! They try to make them the next Fred Astaire! Making them alcoholics was new to me! Please keep us updated!

There are conflicting reports about the freed Sochi Bears. The Daily Mail (see AniMae's comment above) states 2 March that the bears have been released by The Brigitte Bardot but the Daily Star (Socialist News) reports on 6 March: that the bears had been released by Court Order and that a British Charity called The Big Heart Trust was awaiting the means to transport them across the Black Sea. Believe me, until every petition is completely closed on all these issues not a single signature is ever wasted. As I say there are very many bears being held captive in the same way in Russia and it's outlying countries and the Sochi Bears release and continued signings are a signal for others who treat them like this that the end is in sight for this barbaric practice. I contacted WAP however because they are asking for donations to help secure the release. They have released 77 bears however, with the help of donations, from bear-baiting in Pakistan. There are 40 still awaiting rescue there.
