Join ASPCA and insist that the National Organic Standards Board insure the humane treatment of chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese raised for organic food. Current and proposed rules don't protect birds from beak trimming, force-feeding & other cruelties.

602, TU Susan. If you don't choose to renounce eating meat, at least buy it from a humane supplier.

Humane? What is HUMANE about enslaving another species an slaughtering it so you can fill your pie hole?
Petitions like this are ludicrious!. Go Vegan and stop the abuse for real!!!!
Was going to refuse to sign, but instead I'll post my opinion of Organic 'Humane'. BTW what about the non organic??

Noted, Signed, & Shared! I would love to see everyone become a vegan as I am and many on Care2 are as well but the reality is that most people still consume meat even though I have heard that it is decreasing. Maybe some day, our entire world will be vegan when more and more people start to wake up not only to the cruelty involved with meat production especially at factory farms (which is where the majority of meat comes from) but also the adverse consequences of eating meat on one's health such as increased risks of cancer and coronary artery disease. But, until more people become enlightened in these areas, we need to recognize that if there aren't laws put into place that will at least afford these animals some protection from the most cruel practices then we are simply ignoring more suffering. Progress usually happens when you make more people aware of issues and you continue to make changes in the laws and in people's awareness! If you look at the progress that was made in civil rights, women's rights, and now in LGBT rights, it happened over a period of time. I would love to see change (especially when it effects people or animals' welfare) happen overnight but the reality is that it usually happens gradually. You cannot create change by simply denying reality. We have to acknowledge that there are many factors involved with change and especially in a complex world with billions of people and political and economic factors which also influence people's thinking and impact progress. Hopefully, we will continue to move in the right direction and alleviate all suffering for all sentient beings!

Patricia - you're right of course. But you've got to begin sometimes with changing (or education about) what you can. That's why I say in my petition letter,
"as minimum measures" and also request fully free range.

Not everyone has arrived at the conclusion you or I have, nor is everyone capable of making complete changes all at once. The main point of this petition - to make people understand that just by buying organic, doesn't mean the animals were raised humanely - might just disclose some facts the will knock some off the fence -- some who were comfortable before eating chicken because they believed, being labeled organic, they were raised like in the old days. (not that that was humane either - please don't misunderstand).
