My worst nightmare has come true. Fifteen years ago, US public health officials declared that infections resistant to antibiotics could become a major threat. That threat, it seems, has arrived.

"....because state and federal agencies are doing a poor job keeping track of superbug deaths, we really have no idea just how many other cases like this exist."

So true Animae. People will be kept in the dark until they feel it.....I never knew until I was in the hospital and came out with MRSA! Then found out how to really wash your hands...Sing the ABC'S forward and backward scrubbing your hands at all times.....SCARY Animals are cleaner than most humans IMHO

Horrofic - and it is the same in Germany...
I have to admit, that because of this I'm very afraid of to have to go into a Hospital. And the worst is that there are appropriate hygiene regulations here, which are usually not or only insufficiently implemented for reasons of cost. In some cases, serious negligence is acted upon, and the people are dying. This is a form of cynicism that I can not deal with. And it is also one reason why I avoid taking antibiotics and I always search for alternative ways of curing a desease, whenever it is possible.

We can thank the Medical Profession for a greater loyalty to their own pocketbooks than to their medical integrity, undisciplined practice by virtue of thoughtless over prescription without stewardship or appropriate follow up is the culprit.

We could soon be at the whims of disease not unlike where we were before the advent of penicillin and it didn't have to be.

Antibiotics should only be used when they are necessary.

Our overuse of antibiotics is starting to bite us in our collective @$$. This woman is an innocent victim of our screwy health "care" system.

Another reason not to drink real milk or eat meat of any kind or their products. The overuse of Antibiotics.
If they didn't abuse animals by overcrowding these would never be used.

I agree with Trish! Also, to protect yourself, good hand washing is essential. I try to disinfect all my shopping carts, and try to avoid touching doorknobs, etc. .
It also helps if you take good probiotics, to strengthen your immune system.
