Mankind has been responsible for the extinction of many animal species. But natural history futurist Stewart Brand says we may now have the technology that could help reverse the decline.

while as someone with a lot of science background this sounds fascinating, the question should be "do we want or need to?"...........I wish we would take the same money, time, efforts, energy to preserve what we have today for the future....

Ridiculous. Why bring these animals back when we can't even look after the present say ones---we're killing them all-stealing their homes+polluting their oceans. I can just see it now...these animals are brought back+than sold to zoos-used in canned hunts+poached yet again to extinction---really what an absolutely STUPID selfish irrational idea.

we should focus on the ones we still have..keeping them alive..saving the planet so they can thrive.

Only if we never kill them again

Why bring them back?

Noted. I believe we should do everything possible to keep animals from becoming extinct. Once they are extinct we should not try to bring them back.

Only God can bring them back!

I'm pretty sure God has nothing to do with this but the real question is should we bring them back? True they are extinct due to humans but aren't we having enough problems keeping the ones owe have from going extinct as well? I have little faith in the human species and to bring them back invites trouble (for them).

Interesting. Yes, we need to preserve the ones that we have - but we should make the effort to restore ones that we drove past the event horizon. Quaggas, great auks, thylacines, passenger pigeons, moas, et cetera. Even if we can't return them to the wild, surely we can keep them in preserves or ethical zoos.
