Catch limits set to take effect this week will take a bite out of an industry that dates back to America's colonial past: New England cod.

Check the history of cod to find that they have been overfished on the East coast for centuries. It is likely that industrial fishing must be swept from the face of earth.
Cod in europe were destroyed back in medieval period, and even herring were destroyed following. You might not know that the "Fairs" so sung about in folk music were the herring fairs.
You also may not know that the reason European armies of the last millennium traveled on these fish, and thus did not ravage the land as armies elsewhere did.
It's all in your history, ignored in schools, but easily available

Right now the Koreans and Chines are fishing down the KRILL in the Antarctic - Krill are like shrimpabout 2" long orless in general, and a major source of food for the large fish people used to eat, They also exist north. Major cpomponents of the deep scattering layer are these along with squid and some others. When the menhaden, anchoveta, herring, smelt, krill, are taken down by humans, then you WILL see real collapse.

Signed me & seals & whales (I have alwasy lived in close contact with the ecosystems ad issues about which i comment on care2. It is a shock to me how most humans live, utterly absent personal immersion in the world.

The big fish tankers have done a lot of damage, but it is ruining the little fishermen. Thank you.

you'd think they would have learned something from their neighbors to the north , years ago when their cod fishery tanked . we just can't seem to get it thru our thick heads that you can't continue to take thousands more fish than are produced year after year and expect them to last . and it's not just the cod , it's every species in the ocean .
