Reason Rally 2016 believes science can cure the social ills of religion. But it isn't sure what a "healthy" society will look like.

I think, given how Christianity works in the U.S. , that Atheism might prove to be a refreshing change.

Reason Rally 2016 believes science can cure the social ills of religion.
But it isn't sure what a "healthy" society will look like.
The article makes a point.
This is why SOME Atheists, and Atheist Humanists and others, opt for a Movement [if you want to call it that], called "Atheism PLUS".
It is Atheism not ONLY as such, but Atheism with a Humanist, Secular, and Liberal or "Progressive" Code of Ethics.

There is of course room for BOTH kinds of Atheism. Or MANY kinds.
Some Atheists are Libertarians, Rethuglicans, Bigots in their own way, Nationalists, misogynists, pro-War, ignoramuses.... they run the spectrum.
Rethuglican hero Ayn Rand was a committed Atheist, which is funny.....

Those speakers at the "Reason Rally" who said that ALL Society's troubles were due to Religion, and that with Religion's vanishing they would ALL go away, are of course as the writer of this article says, quite naive....

Writer has perhaps never heard of "Atheism PLUS", it doesn't get much publicity.....
And it seems to not have had any presence at the Rally. Which thus did not represent ALL Atheists... maybe only a select group were invited! That's always possible.... Politics is EVERYwhere! affecting EVERYthing...
The Nazis were very "reasonable" and rational, in carrying out their programs!
or Love or the Buddhist Virtue of Compassion.....
Which are non-Material......

Absolutely agree with everything you written here, BMutiny.

Egoism, yet again, gets the bonus points for me, for being the number one enemy, which we all have the germ of, but which in most of us, can be cultivated and kept balanced and free from harm.

So basically the Reason Rally was a big joke. As one would expect from people who actually might believe that science will fix the ills of society. Science is cold, hard, calculated fact and lots and lots of theory, which, sorry to say, does nothing to change human values. A basic tenet of Communism is atheism and those governments are among the most evil known to history. How about we all just learn to tolerate each others belief systems whether religious or not, without constantly denigrating each other. Science will never decide morality.

But, but, but, AniMae, that's rather like a cell within the human body, asking to be shown the human body.

What the human mind/intellect misses is the vast scale of reality. We're contained within it all. . . .

Science might not decide morality, Donn, but those power-possessing, controlling egoists, following SCIENTISM might.

❤️ :-) I'm not religious by any stretch of the imagination as one would think of religious. I can find the Holy Spirit under a large gum tree or a draping willow tree by the creek or in my kitchen. It's a spiritual thing that invades ones soul and because I was raised up with my grandfather telling me one does not need a religious building to be spiritual or to pray or to be a good person who helps where ever one can. so I'm a spiritual being who can sit reflect and pray where ever I be. This is my mantra. So God Bless you one and all.❤️
❤️ Thanking you kindly for sharing this information❤️

Good old Donn....trying desperately to smear atheism with the dirty old brush of godless communism! It won't work....reason is increasing as people actually see the ridiculousness of formal religion.

"This year, it is difficult to imagine that the organizers haven't asked the speakers to limit their politics, to remain "on-message" and positive. There is no denouncement of religion, only its consequences. There are no attendees holding signs that say "BAN GOD." There is nothing quite so pointed this time, but without this animating antagonism, what is left?"

'but without this animating antagonism, what is left?'....that's an excellent question. What is left? Card carrying Atheists neatly neglect the obvious, that Atheism is itself a Belief System.

I miss her wits too, wonder where she left them. I don't care about atheism Pam, but it sure doesn't guarantee any goodness in the world. It also doesn't guarantee reason.

One of the multitude of problems humankind faces, is that it doesn't often operate from any basis of reason, given we're also instinctive and emotional creatures, so we operate, react, and act from a variety of different stimuli.

The way I define it, "Religion" has HIJACKED Spirituality.
Spirit EXISTS, can't be defined or pinned down, exists UNIVERSALLY in every Culture and Language, as far as we can tell, thruout all our History. It seems to co-exist with Consciousness itself.
There are PLENTY of Spiritual Traditions with NO GOD, GODS, GODDESSES, or "BEINGS" deemed necessary.
It is PERFECTLY CONSISTENT to say, as I do, that one is or can be, a "SPIRITUAL ATHEIST".

Certainly the God of the Bible and of the Three Abrahamic Traditions, is a COMPLETE IMPOSSIBILITY, an ABSURDITY. CAN'T BE "all-knowing, all-powerful, AND all-good" AT THE SAME TIME. Not if words have meaning! Two out of the three, at most! This was figured out Centuries ago, Millennia ago......

Anyway, RELIGION WAS ALWAYS A TOOL OF THE RULING CLASS. To keep THEM in power and privilege, and the REST of the people in IGNORANCE and therefore, OBEDIENCE. [Including, Donn, the stupid religion of Marxism! which WAS a CULT! only substituting one God for another!]

and leave room for True Spirituality - that's what a LOT of people here on Care2, I see doing!
Spirituality is Fluid, Growing, Marvelous, a Matrix.....
Spirituality, NOT RELIGION, is a Basis for Ethics, an Ethics of Love or the [Atheist!] Buddhist idea of Compassion....

Most religions like big government are about controlling people. Liberty works for all regardless of religious believes. Peace & Freedom is the only path for real progress. Let everyone live their own lives how they see fit. Unleash the power of human innovation to solve the world's problems.

Noted. Thanks, Freya.
Wow, that was quite a group that attended. Too bad they can't find a simple focus. But, it was nice to read that they have evolved beyond the "hateful atheist" mentioned in the article.

What this group is really fighting, in my opinion, is the damage brought by the word "atheist" in decades past. Anyone remember Madolyn Murray O'Hare?.....back in the 60's she was a face at the forefront of the atheist movement and was constantly demonized. She eventually disappeared.....literally, as I have read.

And, then there was the political & ridiculous linking of communism with atheism to give it even more hatred. (I personally think that Bill Maher did a lot to change this perception with the movie "Religulous"---which I loved and own a copy of).
So, despite the emptiness expressed in the article, along with some foolishness, I was very glad to see this Reason Rally happen, (and might have joined if I didn't live on the other side of the country).

For me, I just want to keep the separation of church and state as completely divided as possible. Religion seeping into women's rights and choices should not happen at all. I would like 'god' taken out of the Pledge and off all our money. To me, that is a terrible line that was crossed long ago and should be considered as "sacrilegious" by those who are religious.
Just keep religion in the churches and keep the various religions from fighting with each other. Don't push your religion on me, and I will leave you alone, too.
And, for good measure, I think it's well past time we start taxing churches.

To each their own. As a Christian, I would hate the thought of my life ending in an instant. I KNOW that I will see all the family, friends and animals in the afterlife.

As BMutiny wisely points out. . . Spirituality exists. The human mind/intellect is so constructed that it has to have physical evidence that it can "literally" feel, hear, see, taste and touch. Without that "literal" experience, the intellectual construct logic kicks in, decides there's no evidence, and dismisses.

One has to use all of one's senses, and incorporate "instinct" and one's sense of sensitivity in order to experience any kind of real Spirituality.

You can believe in something; it is up to you, but religion just ruins everything and for sure religion will not solve the world's problems: science and reason will

That's good, but now I'd also like to see the rise of antitheism, dystheism, maltheism, and misotheism (in relation to the main evil ideas of ‘God,’ even though he doesn't exist.)
