The video is a distressing glimpse into life on minimum wage, and shows just how much government help is needed to keep low-wage earners afloat, as their big corporation employers see profits grow.

Thank you Freya. I appreciate learning about the share tables. NEW Mexico raised the minimum wage this week. The nation has a ways to go.

The income gap continues to grow every year. Will we never learn that "trickle down" doesn't work?

This is the reason that both Federal and State minimum wage laws must include an annual cost of living increase, like pensions and Social Security. But as you see, the clowns just continue to screw around and screw the workers. I am certain every government contract calculates annual cost of living increase, too.

I only had money and insurance for about 15 years out of my 70 years. If someone put a loaded gun to my head I would bless them.

It's absolutely disgusting and despicable. They should AT LEAST get paid $15.00 per hour. These corporations are making their huge profits off the backs of their workers. Shame on all of them.

We need at least $15 an hour to survive well in this country. Thanks for the post, and thanks to Ken for the share.

Unemployment benefit in Australia is more than she takes home - $277.85 per week. Still a struggle to live on if you have to pay rent. Aged pension is $900+ a fortnight. True, price of food etc is higher, but still relatively generous compared to USA.

It's a terrible situation, of course...but there are a lot of questions Ms. Cotton doesn't answer, such as why she apparently did not make any attempt to gain any further education or skills training after high school (she was already in her early twenties when the baby was born, so that's not a reason). She also chose to have a baby she could not afford with a man involved in bad things, now he's in jail.

Also, why is she paying $100/month for her cell phone, when you can get by with one WAY cheaper (mine is $40/month through MetroPCS and has everything you could possibly need or want). Why is she only working 20/hrs a week? Most of us, regardless of the job we work, would not be able to survive on that. So yeah, it's little money, but Ms. Cotton made a lot of poor choices that led to her current situation as well.

Also, a quick Google search tells us this "struggling mom" decided to make another baby: https://registry.thebump.com/safiyyah-cotton-charles-rivers-june-2019/33129051
