Marius Is Healthy - Yet He Will Be Killed: Copenhagen Zoo Invites the Public to Autopsy of "Surplus Giraffe"

Animals  (tags: animals, zoo, killing, shot, giraffe, marius, copenhagen, denmark, public, autopsy )

- 1962 days ago -
Marius is a healthy half year old giraffe. Yet he will be killed with a bolt gun in Copenhagen Zoo on Sunday. Copenhagen Zoo each year kills between 20 and 30 so-called "surplus animals", including lions, tigers, bears and zebras.

Sickening! Petition???

Friday February 7, 2014, 9:33 am
Sadly I haven't been able to find any petition - but I can tell you, there is a lot of public outrage in Denmark about it! Time is also very, very scarce now! Unfortunately, I couldn't find any articles in English about this story although I've looked around quite a bit, so that is why I had to Google Translate a news story from a Danish paper.

I can't believe this senseless killing of a beautiful healthy animal. Can they not ask other parks or zoos round the world to take him. If we can get the email address of the zoo we could email them and put the address on twitter for people to email also.

Johan Maltesson (166)

Oh, yes, writing the zoo and telling them how you feel about this would actually be an excellent idea - can't believe I didn't think about that before... =) Please do so!

Their e-mail address is:

The website has gone down, but this is ridiculous. Oh hi, we have extra animals -- many of which can no longer be released back into the wild. No, sorry, we don't share, we shoot them! Are they nuts?

This is so horrible. Sometimes the surplus animals are sold 4 canned hunting 4 big $$$$. It happens quite often. I've never understood why other zoos/sanctuaries don't offer to save these animals. It's very very wrong. Thanks

Johan Maltesson (166)
Friday February 7, 2014, 5:57 pm
Thank you Sharon for mailing them and for sharing this on Twitter. A agree, it's very ridiculous that they see killing as the only solution when having too many animals! There has to be some place that the animals could go! And it's also so very irresponsible to breed animals if they then don't have any room for them! And also of course, this isn't just any little zoo, this is the prestigious royal national zoo in the middle of the capital - surely, they if anyone should have the means to care for their animals better than this! Btw, the link to their website seems to be working again now - hopefully it was down before because of too many upset people visiting at once...!

There must be something we can do, this cannot be allowed to continue,. If you bring an animal into the world you are under a moral obligation to care for it.. Why can't contraception be used rather than killing an animal. Contraception would stop the problem of too many animal so easily.

Grier Ewins (0)
Saturday February 8, 2014, 4:37 am
I can't believe this, why let the poor animal get to this age before killing him? It is not his fault he is 'surplus', it is sickening and should stop.

There MUST be another way. The zoo should stop breeding these animals if there are no homes for them, maybe they only need females at the moment, but I really don't think that gives them the go ahead to kill all the resulting males. It is barbaric and sounds like the sort of thing that would have been happening decades ago.

And to do it with a bolt gun??? I suppose that is so that he can be fed to other animals but how undignified for the animal.

I really hope they change their minds.

Thank you so very much for making a petition for Marius and for sharing it! A friend of mine here in Sweden has also told me that she will spread it now through her blog, and I hope many other will do the same! I hope that as many people as possible will see it and have their eyes opened on what's happening at Copenhagen Zoo! It's now early evening here in Scandinavia, and there is now less than 24 hours before they are planning to kill Marius - continue to spread the word!

Oh, and there is just one more thing I wanted to add - I don't think it comes out clearly in the Google Translated article, but this is literally what the Zoo Director is quoted as saying: "We have all seen a living giraffe, and it is a large and powerful animal, but it is something else to see how it looks on the inside. There are many fascinating parts on a giraffe." !!!

Dear Copenhagen Zoo,

Marius, a healthy Giraf should not be killed.
It is inhumane to turn to this easy way out for an alive and sentient creature.
I am sure you have the expertise and know how of humane and civilized ways to deal with certain problems in the zoo concerning giraffes.
I am outraged to read that you seem to be without empathy for the faith of Marius.
I will share the petition through next to FaceBook by email as well to as many people possible.
Hope you will see the light and make the wise and adult decision that goes with dealing with this issue that needs to be treated with the utmost
carefullness. We are talking about animals, people who love them and respect them, we are talking about giving the right example how to deal with an innocent being towards all your visitiors and all the children that count on your professionality.. Please we beg you to take notice of our plea!!

Thank you,

Pieter Cornelis

Grier ewans: I have a Feeling that you are projecting Your Feeling onto Marius. It is not undignifying being fed to other animals. why waste perfectly good Meat? Seems Like the other zoo animals might as Well get food out of the giraffe, than just dumping it. Doesn't make Any sense. Wanting the Meat Would be undignifying.
Also, the giraffe is 18 months old not 6. The reason why they put him down now is because he is becoming of breeding age. Would you Rather that they Would have killed him off when he Was first born, not letting him have a slibe of life? A good (though short) life is better than no life in my opinion. It is not Like he has Walked around zoo for 18 months, knowing he Would get killed eventually.

That being Said I Also Think it is wrong to kill Marius.

If anyone wants to telephone Copenhagen Zoo to voice their disgust at the decision regarding Marius, the full telephone number is (if dialing from the UK):

What do we do???? I've tried to leave a comment on the Facebook page and to leave a comment on the bbc page - but both have been removed. If you've read the news in the Ekstra Badet then you know how disgusting this whole thing is. The zoo official is saying that they regularly kill "surplus" animals of all kinds and then invite the public to the autopsy before feeding the meat to their carnivores. I see an email address to above possted by Julia McCallum. I will send protest their. Please join me!

I have sent an email to the zoo. I have posted on their FB page. I have signed both petitions. I took the time to try and translate their argument about why they are doing this, but it didn't make alot of sense to me. They should try other alternatives, such as a sanctuary somewhere. They are the ones that allowed this baby to be born and they are the ones at fault for this. They knew a baby would be produced and they knew they would murder it like this. I'm outraged. I absolutely do NOT think that feeding the dead giraffe to the animals at the zoo should be done. That's disgusting.

So they let captive animals breed only to kill the offspring? With a bolt gun? And the public is invited to the autopsy of a perfectly healthy young animal that's been shot in the head? What the hell is wrong with the danish people allowing this to happen to young, healthy animals? Just when you think humans have hit the bottom of the proverbial barrel, you hear of something like this and realize that we're no where near the bottom yet.

They have not responded to Yorkshire wild life Park so far...have tweeted for confirmation..Sweden has also offered to take him.
That statement by Zoo "Director" is unbelievable...IMO he should be working abbatoir comes to mind...sorry....How on earth did this zoo get to the point of killing & feeding to the carnivores animals in their care?? Its disgusting & needs investigation...Praying & Hoping for Marius to be safe!

What they are going to do is unconscionable. Especially when two other zoo's have made requests for the giraffe and have received no return interest. Killing this young giraffe needs to be stopped at all costs. Something is truly odd when they insist on killing him even though he could be transferred to an out of country zoo.

Evelyn B (63)
Saturday February 8, 2014, 10:46 pm
The most shocking is the quote by the zoo director
"Zoo Director is aware that the killing of large, exotic animals evoke strong emotions. For him there is no fundamental difference between a giraffe and a rat"
So many alternatives - other zoos, send back to Africa ....

So the killing of some humans to keep the numbers down is just around the corner!

I am shocked to read about this unbelievable cruelty. The Director of the Zoo in DK should fired and punished for killing animals who are normally an attraction for people. There are several zoos or sanctuarys to adopt this little soul.
A director doign such evil acts to innocent beings should be removed from any animal shelter or zoo.We in Belgium are expecting 2 Chinese Panda Bears soon this month and these animals will fly half the world in a VIP manner and will be taken care in a new and large facility.Shame on Denmark. You are loosing your morals.I hope zoos all over the world will react on this and condemn the Zoo in DK.

Once again the myriad rules / regulations of that monstrous unaccountable superstate that is jokingly known as the European community is being used to justify the bolt killing of Marius. Other Zoos in Yorkshire (England) and the Netherlands offered to take Marius and were ignored . There are a number of discrepancies and unanswered questions that the Copenhagen Zoo authorities needs to answer now that Marius has been slaughtered and hiding behind European regulations ISN'T acceptable This Zoo sounds more like a concentration camp for animals than an institution supporting and promoting animal welfare. CLOSE IT DOWN NOW and put these 'managers' who have such contempt for the General public where they belong AS FAR AWAY from vulnerable young animals as possible.

Marius has been MURDERED and his body, after a public autopsy, is to be fed to the big cats. What a totally, disgusting practise. What's next for the zoos, breeding elephants and rhino so their tusks and horn can be sold to Asian countries for quack medicine, breeding tigers and bears so their bones can also be used for bogus potions, breeding fur-bearing animals so they can be skinned alive and their coats made into fur items, the list is endless. What a waste of life, to be bred, just to be killed. Its bad enough this is done for the meat industry but for a zoo to carry out this practise? unbelievable. Other zoos actually WANTED this giraffe, but oh no, lets kill him instead. Shame on ALL the heartless, soul-less cretins at that zoo.

Footnote: This was a cold, calculated situation, planned many months in advance. The reason this mother giraffe was bred in the first instance, was because everybody loves a baby, and visitors would PAY to see a bay, so once again, money, greed and profit were behind this tragedy. Marius was NOTHING but a 'decision' to be born as a money-making machine whilst he was a baby and cute. What a most despicable place, exploitation at its most cruellest. Shame on this so-called zoo and all that practise this money-making debacle.

You know what is really sickening, (besides the murder of this defenseless Giraffe) is that people actually came to watch. What kind of people live in Copenhagen. Reminds me of the old west when people went to watch a lynching, at least they lynched a bad guy, this was a defenseless baby Giraffe. I find it hard to believe they could not find another zoo to take him or even a sanctuary. People really suck!
