PETITION - Stop Declawing Cats in Ontario

The College of Veterinarians of Ontario has the power to make this change by enacting a ban on declawing. Many veterinarians don't declaw and others want to stop performing the procedure but having the support of a ban would make it so.

Since March of 2017 the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) opposes elective and non-therapeutic Partial Digital Amputation (PDA), commonly known as declawing or onychectomy, of domestic cats. There are some cases when PDA may be necessary for a cat's survival, such as surgery to remove tumours of the nailbed(s), or in the bones of the digits, severe or irreversible damage to the digits, abnormal formation or growth of the claws/digits, or severe infections. A further considerable that vets may take into account is the development of a weakened immune system in the human with whom a cat lives, such as a cancer patient whose immune system is greatly suppressed by chemotherapy. If declawing is not an option for such a person, they may have to give up their cat. Veterinarians have the right to refuse to perform non-therapeutic PDA surgery but they also have the right and responsibility to use professional judgement for a humane and ethical outcome for the cat as well as for the caregiver of the cat. .
