There's debate as to whether animals comprehend loss of life the way humans do, but when we see photos like this, the answer seems crystal clear. Reddit user Kanadka took a photograph of her pets apparently grieving together after the loss of her other

I read this the other day. Yes, pets can grieve for a missed companion. I had a dog who grieved when my ferret died, she looked for her for days afterward. It was so sad. So yes, they do. Thanks, Barb for this.

Incredible picture and article that really shows the deep bonds of affection that animals are capable of forming between eachother. Iíve experience this first hand in my life just recently with the death of an 11 yr.old dog who died of cancer. My other little rescue, Herbie who is now 10 yrs. old has been showing signs of terrible depression. Herbie hasnít been eating, and searches for Emmy every day throughout the house since her death. This has been going on for at least a month now. Although, the vet thoroughly checked him out and he shows no physical abnormalities, he believes that it is related to Emmyís death as I do.

Animals are capable of developing deep emotional bonds with eachother as well as with their human companions. Time and time again, as pet owners we witness this! Animals also have the emotional capacity for empathy and compassion! They BarbKnight for this great post about the emotional complexity of animals.

Noted, tweeted, shared, tweeted, shared. There is no doubt that animals recognize death and grieve after it occurs to an animal or human they love. I had two poodle sisters. One died after fifteen years. The other grieved for the next five years. It was truly sad.

Thanks Barb! That is so sweet!!!! Those poor little guys miss their play mate!! Animals are smart and they DO feel compassion I firmly believe that! They know when we are happy or sad and they react accordingly just as they have here! Have you seen the photos of the different dogs where their owner died and was buried and the dogs slept on top of the graves!? They know!!

it is very true, they can understand a lot... i had a male cat who was very affected when i broke up with a boyfriend and i was very sad... the cat was very attached to that guy and he was suffering because of this... he somehow understood that we said goodbye and i was crying inside...

Thank you for that great example that animals grieve.
I hope a lot of humans who can't believe animals have the same feelings like us - read this story.

Human beings do not have a monopoly on emotions! Though the way 'we' treat animals it seems 'we' might think that we do..

They do grieve.I have seen it in action myself when we lost an older dog.The young one was inconsolable for quite a loing time!
We are arrogant in out treatment of animals, thinking we are the only ones with emotions anfd intelligence!
I often think the world would be a better place without humanity.

When our older dog passed, our other dog brought his (the deceased dog's) favorite toy over and placed it by his nose. We even had a cat that brought a dead mouse over to our other cat's grave and left it there. One would have to be rather obtuse to not recognize the feelings in animals.

Of course animals grieve, love, dislike, desire to live and be happy. Some people like to think animals are living robots that humans can do what they wish to them. All animals are sentient beings.

Forgot to add that they can die from broken hearts, just like some humans. Mist of the time I think that our fellow earthlings have more depth than is humans.

A few years ago one of our cats passed away. 2 of the other 3 moped around for about a month or so. I gave them extra lovin's and kisses, but you could tell they missed Ivory!! They snapped out of it when I got a new cat for them to watch and play chase with!
