"Almost as many girls write to me as boys, and all say that they like to read boysâEUR(TM) books," Edward Stratemeyer, head of the Stratemeyer Syndicate, wrote in 1905. "But it's pretty hard to get a boy to read a girl's book, I think."

I'll never forget going to the beach with my family and seeing my sister Carol, with a Nancy Drew book in her hand. She read Nancy Drew books all summer...........

I didn't know this and what a shame it is. Nancy was a brilliant, self-reliant and intelligent girl who certainly didn't care about how she looked or needed to seek out help from boys. Girls today could learn a lot about self-acceptance, taking risks and their ability to solve problems from the untainted versions. I was a big fan and saw the entire series in an antique store a couple of months ago. Money prevented me from taking home the set but I'll never forge the enjoyment I got from reading about her adventures. Thanks, Barb, for the stroll down memory lane. Noted.

I don't recall ever reading a Nancy Drew book. I did read the article earlier.
I get Huffington Post daily.
Thank you Barb

Carol would devour her Nancy Drew books and the more she read, the more Mom encouraged her. I never got into Nancy Drew. My fave author was Judy Bloom. She wrote in first person...first person is as if the main character is telling the story. Mom once told me; 'Once you start reading books in first person, you'll never go back to second person.' And she was right! Second person say; She went to town. First person says; I went to town.
