The execution of Thomas Knight last week is a textbook case for why Florida's dysfunctional death penalty should be scrapped. Here was a man whose guilt was never in doubt, whose crimes were cold-blooded, whose attitude remained remorseless and often...

Thanks, Carrie, for this unusual article. Unusual because it doesn't rehash all the moral and religious objections to capital punishment, nor does it stress its disproportionate application to minorities. It only touches shortly upon the question of executing an innocent person. What this article does is take the rational approach, it steers away from emotion and discusses the one thing that people are worried most about nowadays: their wallet and the money they pay into taxes. It consider the death penalty strictly as an expensive, endless drain of legal resources.

While I rather prefer to abolish the death penalty because of the other reasons, making it all about tax payers money is fine with me if that is what it takes to convince people that executions should be put to an end.

Kind of surprised that the big for-profit prisons don't vote against the death would get them more money.

Thank You Carrie, for this great article. The death penalty should be abolished in Florida, as it has been in so many other states. Life in prison with no parole would work just as well, and not be as costly.

Expensive.... yes, amongst other things (like inefficient -it doesn't lower crime-rates; far from fault-proof -see The Innocent Project; morally unjust: it's state cautioned murder; and if you think a bit....).

No matter for what reason, death penalty should be abolished.

Articles like this one make people wonder, make the hesitate whether death penalty is a good solution.

As it is not, every way of seaming doubt and every way of leading to abolishment is a good one.

Thanks Carrie!

And thenks for the link Angelika!

There is no death penalty in my country, it was abolished back in 1976 but the last execution took place in 1962. There are people later on proven to be innocent and if executed and the investigation is incorrect, no one can bring back those unjustly convicted. I believe in paying the penalty of murder in this life and not the hereafter, so life in jail is the fair penalty.
