Yes American football to the British is considered to be a very tame version of Rugby and think of it as a bit of a joke as there is very little kicking of the ball, also the British do wonder why Americans insist on calling Football, soccer. There is also the fact that the commentary was being sarcastic and was taking the piss.

To start out I dislike football. Having said that, the English humor is there as dry as it usually is. Maybe I am missing something but I thought the Super Bowl was for professional football types not college or am I showing my ignorance?

Yes, the Super Bowl is professional football ~ NFL. Perhaps that was meant to be part of the British commentary humor.
