The 2014 Factor No One Is Talking About -- Seniors Are Turning On The GOP

Seniors -- America's most reliable voters -- may end up leading a backlash against a post-government-shutdown Republican Party that is even less popular now than when George W. Bush left office.

I really don't know why anyone would be surprised at this. Seniors as a percentage of the electorate, caucasian seniors, have been dropping 1% to 2% in every election since 1990. The republicans have nothing to offer the average senior and I think even that article was skewed by counting seniors beyond the boomers. Boomers, other than the 1%, don't share the same values the modern gop does. People older than that are influenced by religion to a greater extent than younger generations and the republicans pander to the religious extremists, the bible thumpers of the red states - who are NOT great in numbers, though very loud, certainly. Republicans think seniors don't notice they have cut programs that hold seniors together, allow them to stay in their own homes. Republicans are like so many con artists, and seniors have seen them all through the decades, you have to watch what they DO not what they say because they are often not even close to the same thing. The republican platform in 2012 was as anti senior as it can get, it was anti everything and everyone who wasn't a religious extremist or a 1%er. They play on the fears of the elderly, but do nothing to actually help them. All those holier-than-thou speeches about what Obamacare would do to the elderly turned out to be the same as the rest of their spiel, empty, meaningless except to bigots and rich people. I think the republican party is on its way to becoming an historical footnote in American politics, because its values are not shared by the majority of us, and the minority who do share its values are dying off and shrinking in number each election. While the people they hate grow in numbers. Fully half of the 5 and under children in this country are not white, by 2043, less than half the entire population will be white. The times are changing and the republican party hasn't a single idea of merit to go with that change, all their ideas are about who to blame and what to stop doing for people while this country spends 10 times what the rest of the world spends annually on defense. That is insanity, paranoia and stupidity all rolled into the same package and no one is buying the warm kool aid the republican party is still trying to sell. It is good they don't notice, not that they could change, and come up with something that might persuade a few people they have a good idea. But they don't even try, it is year after year, more of the same. And that isn't good enough for anyone including seniors, perhaps especially seniors as boomers move into those ranks.

Noted. I can't improve on Gene's excellent comment...except to say, watch how the votes are counted. And, make sure voting laws aren't changed in your state to eliminate people and keep them from voting. I've read articles stating that "early ballots" aren't even counted......

Very poor, unfound assertions. Any thinking, caring senior for their children and grandchildren's future fears this m Uber Liberal tax and spend mindset that hollows this country out. Not to mention the rapid rot of liberty by Liberal PCism.

WRONG, Sue O., it is because I Love My Children and am looking forward to becoming a Grandmother that I went from an Independent to Anti-Republican, since the current Republican Party is all about greed to the point of destroying the environment, forgetting that it was President Richard M. Nixon who signed the EPA into Law. After all, there is a Republican running for Congress from the state of Oklahoma, whose Facebook page I stumped upon who brags how he is out to arm people and destroy the EPA--HE IS WHY FOR THE LOVE OF MERCY AND FOR THE LOVE OF FAMILY--THAT REPUBLICAN NEEDS TO BE KEPT OUT OF OFFICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Their voters (white upper-class males) are dying out, this is just a (last?) attempt to stop the decline.

To have a chance to get a next Gop-president elected, they'll have to change more profoundly...

It's no surprise that the wisest wake up first. Things are slowly coming to a head. I think the division is coming right down to the people that stare at fox, with a glazed over look, the KKK and every one else….that doesn't subscribe to the 4th reich.

They should never underestimate the power of cranky, old people - we may not look like much of a threat anymore but we are mighty!

I really feel that there will be more seniors of all races voting than ever before. After all we have been around for a long time and are fed up with the density of the very dirty politics and the millionaires/billionaires that think they can pull all the strings. Never underestimate seniors!
Thanks Carrie.
