10 Movies That Got Great Performances From Actors... By Torturing Them

Yes, actors transform themselves in the never-ending quest for an Oscar -- but it's not always a pleasant experience. As usual, this year's Academy Awards have nominated numerous actors who were voluntarily tortured, abused, and punished for their art.

If the acting isn't good enough to make it convincing, then the film industry has ways to make it convincing, hasn't it.

Better them than defenseless animals that do not have a choice.

You could add John Rhyes-Davies to that list. He played a dwarf in Lord of the Rings, all three movies. He sat for 4+ hours each day getting the prosthetics, which he was allergic to, causing discomfort, red eyes, and squint...all without complaint. Many actors/actresses willingly torture themselves, or allow the directors, etc, to do things to them hoping to bring a better realism to their roles, and garner Oscar nods. Personally, I think some are just nutso for putting their minds and bodies through what they do...but that's why they get the big bucks.

I'd say they are all a bunch of fools for allowing themselves to be used that way. I'm glad I hadn't seen any of the movies mentioned, I don't want to support torture in any shape of form.

Actors are artists and resort to many methods to achieve their artistic goals. We may not understand, but there is no doubt we enjoy many of their performances.

Great artists I am told suffer for their art. Then there's people like James Cameron....

There are not so great films where the actors also suffered for their art like the Brian of Arous the actor had to wear special contact lenses lined with metal foil. So the look of pained agony was completely real. There is of course George Clooney in attack of the killer tomatoes which curiously had a highly prescient depiction of President George W Bush, I can tell you I expected him to close all the submarine bases because "Those funny little black ships just keep sinking anyway."
