There's really only one way of effecting real change here. That is by changing the dynamic of who runs government, and people's habits as regards gambling, which is a multi-billion pound industry. The Gentry, Nobility, Royalty, Wealthy, and predominantly Conservative right-wing mindset ARE all pro-Hunting, pro-Animal racing, and pro-Animal butchery, because historically, they haven't had real jobs to do which would reduce the amount of free time they have to exploit other lifeforms. All that would require change in order for other lifeforms to thrive.

This is worldwide, and the deeper seated problem is that the industries surrounding this, have lots of employers/employees, so you would have to bear in mind that plenty of people's livelihoods would be affected. Yes, animals suffer, BUT, without changing the way industries and governments operate, you would get real change.

To do that, you require a genuine Labour government OR Green Government in power, in both Australia, China, America and Britain.

So, ANYONE voting for Hillary Clinton OR Donald Trump, or Theresa May's government in Britain, you're going to get EXACTLY the same as we have now. Vote for Jeremy Corbyn in Britain AND Dr. Jill Stein in America, and THINGS WILL slowly start to change.

Animae I voted no of course no watch as the supporters of the industry do their utmost to swing the vote the other way Like you I'm bitterly disappointed but I half expected this would happen.Baird is an homourable and he did this to save his political career andnot throw it away over one issueover one issue. I did that years ago and came to regret it.The lack of integrity is obvious in both out state parties .They are in the firm grip of the gambling fraternity. I would like to see Baird resign from the bloody party an stand as an independent One small consolation ,Lemma who was never a tool of his party and replaced by the power brokers for that ,will enforce some regulations to clean up corrupt and filthy industry.

I've voted NO once more, not sure, tho if I'll keep voting. Frankly, I feel that our votes, now at 8134 incl. mine, are just as 'uncompetitive' s those poor 68.000 dogs! Perhaps even less.

'Tremendously frustrating' isn't the right words here and to Baird's 'apology' I'll say up your ass!
No panel is going to change a thing, except perhaps boost the RSPCA image a bit.
Eternal shame on govts. for HOW FAR they've all let powerful industries run the game, everywhere!

I hope your eyes are feeling much better Walter.......

Better than my broken heart on this. These industries have a lot of power and those polls that you've provided too many people voting to keep the greyhounds racing. There are still too many people who think this is some harmless activity to attend and do not know what is happening to these poor dogs; and then you have a lot who know and still don't care.

I took the poll. Shame shame shame on another who places his political career first - appears there are few in the world who are true Statesmen and care about something beyond their own personal goals and pockets.

Disgusted to hear that ban is to be reversed. I live very near Wimbledon (South West London) and the greyhound track here is to be shut down for the return of the football club. A reversal on the decision to ban Greyhound racing really sucks and so to the ones who did that flip-flop, and I VOTE NO to reversing that ban~~~NO, NO, NO!!!!!!! It never should have started in the first place~~it is animal abuse, and the dogs are discarded or killed when they can no long race to win. Sounds to be like whoever is responsible for making the decision, the rescinding it should go to work at McDonald's or somewhere like that where they won't have to make important decisions. THIS IS HORRIBLE, AND SO SAD FOR THE GREYHOUNDS.

I'm so upset. I had signed multiple petitions, and even sent a personal email to Mike Baird. What a coward he turned out to be. Now he's even giving the go ahead for shark nets at Ballina, that will kill sharks, turtles, dolphins, and whales. Just because surfers go into THEIR territory and are scared. Humans are so selfish. NOTE. The Greyhound industry is now targeting Animals Asia for their part in trying to sustain the ban. They are talking about the donations to Animals Australia being used in the fight against the greyhound industry, and are taking exception to Animal Australia's tax exemption status. They are also trolling Animal Australia's facebook page/fb releases. The Greyhound industry is filled with the lowest form of humanity, and so too, the scum who bet on these poor dogs. Even just yesterday on the news there was a story about the Victorian greyhound industry putting down 4000 dogs a year, due to over breeding. They want to now re-home 3,500 a year. The Victorian RSPCA stated that their total re-homing of ALL dog breeds was 3000 per year, so that would more than double that amount with greyhounds alone. They said it would be an IMPOSSIBLE.task. Over breeding just shows the greed in the greyhound industry, with no regard for these poor gentle dogs!

Voted NO. This the reason for the overturn. Alan Jones is that far up the Liberals it ain't funny
Greyhound Back Down: Was forced by this Radio Broardcaster. OZ's worst commentator, Just Google him and you see what I mean, He gave Julia Gillard hell when she was in power: Alan Jones had dinner with Mike Baird on eve of greyhound backflip: Sydney radio host Alan Jones reportedly met with Mike Baird on the eve of the Premier's expected backdown from a ban on greyhound racing in NSW. During his radio show on Tuesday morning, the conservative broadcaster drew attention to a picture, splashed on the front page ofThe Daily Telegraph newspaper, of Mr Baird and Family and Community Services Minister Brad Hazzard arriving at Jones' Circular Quay apartment on Monday night. The reported dinner comes as cabinet is expected to consider reversing the ban following a sustained industry and media campaign, of which Jones has been a key player.During his morning show on Tuesday, Jones told his listeners that they might have seen the front page picture of him "meeting the Premier and all the rest it" and said that the backflip on the ban "has to happen". Read more here. Thank You to all who h ave Voted on this issue I sent through the week.

Noted and voted for the ban but as I said else where I'm concerned for all the many people who will lose employment. It is not easy to put people out of work on the stroke of a pen. So the government would have been under a lot of pressure to reverse it. The party heavies would have issued an ultimatum and the Premier would have been backed into a corner. Besides that all the news and current affairs, talk back radio stuck their boots into mike Baird and raged for him to be gone.❤️

Thank you Rosie❤️

There's been talk from the industry of 'thousands' losing their jobs Dawn but when they seriously looked into it recently the amount was about 600 people!

Could you earn your money through causing the intense suffering of living beings?!
i certainly COULDN'T!

".....of the 97,783 greyhounds that were bred in New South Wales in the last 12 years,
the evidence suggests that somewhere between 48,891 and 68,448 dogs were killed because
they were considered too slow to pay their way or were unsuitable for racing."

The Commission is of the view that the industry has lost the integrity-based trust of the community and other stakeholders. It could hardly be otherwise.
That is because the greyhound racing industry has been exposed as an industry that:

• has implicitly condoned as well as caused, the unnecessary deaths of tens of thousands of
healthy greyhounds;
• has failed to demonstrate that in the future it will be able to reduce the deaths of healthy
greyhounds to levels the community could tolerate;
• has engaged in the barbaric practice of live baiting;
• has caused and will continue to cause injuries to greyhounds that range from minor to
catastrophic;
• has treated greyhounds as dispensable commercial commodities;
• has deceived the community concerning the extent of injuries and deaths caused during
race meetings;
• has preferred the commercial interests of the industry to the animal welfare interests of
greyhounds;
• has exported greyhounds to race in places such as Macau where animal welfare standards
are very poor; and
• has ignored or failed to recognise that the industry has obligations to the community that go
beyond its strictly legal obligations.

Dear Ms Animae,

I have previously received correspondence from you about the greyhound racing industry.

I am now writing to you after the Government announced its’ in principle support to give the greyhound racing industry one last chance in NSW, subject to it agreeing to the strictest regulations to clamp down on animal cruelty.

Community opinion on this issue remains divided and I know a lot of people will be disappointed by this decision, and it’s not one that the Government has taken lightly. However it has become clear that, based on the commitments the industry has provided since the Government announced its decision to end greyhound racing, the community wants to give the industry one last chance to reform.

The findings of the Special Commission of Inquiry into the Greyhound Racing Industry were stark and impossible to ignore. The Commission found evidence of systemic animal cruelty and advised that the industry was unwilling to change.

Dr John Keniry AM, who has been overseeing the transition away from racing, has advised the Government that there has been a major shift in the industry’s attitude since the announcement of a ban. He believes the industry is now willing to adopt animal welfare reforms that it has resisted for so long.

The industry itself has made commitments that every greyhound bred in NSW will have a full and natural life, breeding numbers will be drastically reduced, they will have a zero tolerance for animal cruelty and racing environments will be made safer.

The Government has invited the RSPCA and greyhound racing industry representatives to join a Greyhound Industry Reform Panel, to be chaired by former Premier Morris Iemma. The Panel will determine the new regime that will ensure greyhound racing in NSW is the cleanest in the country and prioritises animal welfare.

The Government will ask the Panel to consider:
Mandatory life bans and increased jail terms for live baiting;
Registering greyhounds for their entire lives;
An independent regulator with strong new powers to ensure accountability; and
Substantially increased resources for enforcement and prosecution as well as animal welfare.
Subject to the report of the Panel, the Greyhound Racing Prohibition Act will be repealed next year and new legislation introduced enforcing these tough new standards.

While the Government understands our decision will remain unpopular with some, I hope this letter provides a clearer picture of why we have reached this decision, and the path forward for the industry. We understand that, as horrified as everyone was by the practices of animal cruelty, the community also wanted us to give the industry a chance to reform. We will be giving them that chance.

The Government is committed to keeping you informed as these issues develop and, if appropriate, may write to you again to update you.

Thank you once again for having written to me previously to express your views on this issue.

Yours sincerely

MIKE BAIRD MP
Premier
