The General Accounting Office came up with a figure of 3,400 women who had been sterilized; but others speculate that at least that many had been sterilized each year from 1972 through 1976. The General Accounting Office confined its investigation...

TU Nancy. This is disgusting, horrific, and unconscionable....truly a crime against humanity. That the government stole Native American land (and quickly began to destroy it) and violated all the treaties is bad enough, but eugenics is beyond evil. Already signed the petition for Tibet.

Eugenics is evil, and has a long, shameful history. Thanks Nancy.

Within the article:

More significantly, as in the past, societal prejudices and a class-based racist ideology determine the selection process, although on the surface women voluntarily consent to the procedure.

Sterilization might not be the choice of many women if they were better informed and able to receive higher quality medical care.

Turning now to the resultant effects on Native American women, a class traditionally oppressed by economic, social, and financial hardship, one can see just how influential the philosophies of the eugenics movement have been in recent years.

As Thomas Littlewood stated in his book on the politics of population control, "non-white Americans are not unaware of how the American Indian came to be called the vanishing American . . . this country's starkest example of genocide in practice."

Science has provided a means of categorizing and victimizing those in society deemed unworthy of continued existence. Its influence in academic and political circles has created a pervasive social bigotry that rewards extermination over reform. The failure to embrace the racial and cultural diversity of this country has left a wake of destruction and oppression in minority populations.

End of excerpts from article, my words.

It shouldn't by now but it still does amaze me of how many Americans still do not understand what has taken place within the boundaries of this Country, in their name, horrific policies done to the American Indian. If they know any at all, it is something they think that was done in the past, the shoot em up on the plains. Even with that little historical context is known, many still do not realize the mass extintion of the buffalo/bison was due to trying to starve the Indians out of existence.

A grave injustice has not only been done to the American Indian with these policies but the cover up and failure to teach our children their "truthful" history also has not served this Country and it's people well. We have been callous as a Nation and we therefore fail to see how these policies of maltreatment of one people leads to our Nation continuing to maltreat others who are deemed as "different."

Our continual advance of war after war into other Countries with people who are "different" and somehow We, this Nation, knows more of what is good for them then they know themselves. When in actuality it is only a guise to "take" something away from another people. Is the same class warfare being done on those who are less financial off, no matter what their race or heritage, the Elites "take" what they want and guise it in policy that is suppose to be "good" for everyone.

When you don't learn your history, you WILL repeat it, when you don't understand the oppression and policies carried out on others then your name will be used to carry this oppression out again and again.

And while so many are getting into a frenzy about their ability to practice their faith in this Country or feel their rights to pray or display their faith, few seem to realize that the FIRST people who lived here was denied that right until the American Indian Religious Freedom Act was passed in 1978! And still many things are denied to the American Indian despite that passage in the form of having the ability to possess objects considered to be sacred among other things.

Thank you Nancy for doing your part in bringing about some awareness in this area.

Amen Sheryl. I knew your heart and soul would be on this page. I was horrified to think that in my own lifetime our Native Americans (of which I too, am a descendant), are unwittingly and unwillingly giving their freedoms, future and rights to the wind. But, the wind has memory and we have ears and minds to educate and create transparency where there is no heart. As we know from other members personal experience, eugenics is alive. Onward for the greater good.

Yet, history shows it has always been this way. The poor, the sick, the weak have always been the persecuted. In this age, it's just IN OUR FACE.

This may well be the first time in the history of the planet that we have had the technology to connect with one another, those of us who want to receive to share. Those of us who want to shake off our shackles to help remove the chains from our brothers and sisters have the opportunity to "OCCUPY".

We have information. We have technology. We have hope.

While observing the horrors around us, don't be hypnotized by them.

Keep the ;vision of a free people walking free.

The positive thinking teachings circulating our planet are true.
What we believe, we receive.

How do we receive? By image in (positive imagination). Visualize, using all five senses and positive emotion giving positive praise and thanksgiving.

To worry is to pray for what we don't want.

To be positive thinkers is to WORK for what we do want.

Faith plus work = VICTORY!!!

These horrible actions happened in other Countries too,in Norway untill the 1950's the Travelling People had to undergo the same.As far as I know it was not performed on the Norwegian Natives, though they were discriminated against in many other ways.I have no words to describe how angry this makes me.

It must now be clear to all that the system of knowledge that we call "science" is not neutral, not universal, and certainly not a seeker of truth. It is merely an ideology and politics in disguise. Science has throughout history created "truth" that has supported the political and economic elites, who mainly include the white, rich man. Hence science is a patriarchal tool to dominate women, children, poor people, traditional peoples, colored people, and nature.

Brilliant find Nancy, and thanks for making aware Dandelion.

This does not surprise me. This is what Fascists do. All the Bush Clan have been, always were, and will always continue to be, Fascists. Just like the Nazi Party (which was NOT Socialist, it WAS Fascist) with which Prentice Bush (Granddaddy) WAS in league with (also in business with), with no apology for it and was brought up on charges for doing business with the Nazi Party.

If you think this is new, you are mistaken. Fascists always prey on the old, the weak, the sick, the very young and on entire races of peoples -- just ask the Jewish people about that one. It makes my heart sick to know that nothing has changed and the Native Genocide continues to go on right here in America. If they can't kill them outright, well then, destroy their ability to reproduce. Death by attrition. Sickening, horrifying and completely devoid of any human compassion. Ayn Rand would be so proud of Bush Co., Inc. and most all of the Republican/Fascist Party.

Not surprised and not just done to native persons. Eugenics programs (sterilization and psychiatric forcible and involuntary confinement in institutions) have been active in this century in both the U.S. and Canada, some up to only a few decades ago. Goes far beyond just a Bush thing.

The figure of 42% of the women -- 42%!!! -- is shocking. Close to half.
"Native American women going in for ANY medical procedure, could come out sterile", according to the video.

Meanwhile, Repukelicans are conducting a WAR AGAINST CONTRACEPTION AND ABORTION.
Does a little thing nag at your mind here?
THEY DO NOT WANT WHITE WOMEN TO STOP HAVING BABIES.
They DO want Women of Color to stop having babies..... they just can't SAY so out loud.
It is even WORSE than it looks, because THE DEATH RATE FOR BABIES ON SOME NATIVE AMERICAN RESERVATIONS IS HIGH. Keeping the families even smaller.
Very elaborate, circular circumstantial Genocide. Genocidal policies disguised as "Health Care". Not only suppressing the "Coloreds", but FORCING the "Caucasian" women to become brood mares "for the good of the White Race". Not quite eliminating the "inferiors" -- just "keeping them in their place, their numbers low".

This same, by the way, is one of the underlying plot themes of that great "anti-Utopian" Futurist novel, "The Handmaid's Tale", by Margaret Atwood. The absolutely hideous, woman-exploiting Future it depicts IS NOT THAT FAR AWAY. Like George Orwell's "1984"; but even MORE probable!
{Since in that Future, there is no money and ALL transactions are by Computer Card, the Religious Right stages a COUP where ALL they have to do is click a switch and FREEZE EVERY WOMAN'S BANK ACCOUNT and she becomes helpless and dependent on men for survival.....} {It all happens VERY FAST, in the novel, just as did Hitler's Laws against the Jews in Germany and European countries, before people could really fully comprehend what was going on.....} A Warning. What they CAN do. With Modern Technology..... Modern German Technology {of the '30's} made it possible to track everyone's Racial Purity........

Weve seen it all throughout history, practically everywhere. As for Germany, I need not repeat... ( 400000 forcibly sterilized by the nazis until 1945)
First comes eugenics, next step is euthanasia..
Thanks Nancy for bringing this on, to raise awareness AND as a warning for the future..

Yes, thank you Nancy and all the women who are opening our eyes to the ugly truths! I agree, they (the Bush fam) should be up on numerous charges, but they never will--they are the elite--and therefore, untouchable. But karma doesn't recognize "elitism" and will do what she does, now or later!!

BMutiny, speaks wise words. This is the reasoning behind the "quiver movement" to have white women that will reproduce as many babies as possible, guised in religion that God wants them to do so. or God's will. It is leaking out in various ways that this is indeed fact, keeping the racial numbers at acceptable numbers, that is acceptable to the white rich men in power.

This is disgusting. It's insane to think that this was even considered at the time, let alone *condoned* by the President. Seems like the entire Bush legacy was to bankrupt the US and destroy all the lives of the people in it, in every possible way.

It's true, it is the continuation of genocide that has been going on the last 400 years. Steralization is just the more modern approach instead of shooting them and offering rewards for their scalps.

It is so amusing that people will willingly believe almost any conspiracy story that someone concocts like this silly one.
What HW Bush did do for Native Americans was sign the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act into law in 1990. Bush also designate the first national Native American heritage month in the country.

For a man who did so much for the American Indian while President, I am skeptical at best about this article. Who was the older gentleman who spoke? Nixon was involved in the forced sterilization of Native Americans not being in office one year?
There is a lot to this that does not add up.The House and Senate knew these Nazi tactics were occurring and did nothing?

By the way, Dandelion G: statistical facts is a misnomer. Any number can be incorporated into an article. Who offered these "fact"? There is no documentation, not a name (besides Bush's) to support anything written in this article.

The American government pursued sterilization of native women off and on throughout the 20th century: though I am no fan of the elitist Bush family, Pres. Bush is hardly the first president to sit in office while such practices were carried out on reservations.
