Transport of young animals

Sign an appeal to the Polish agriculture minister, Krzysztof Jurgiel, to limit the length of unloaded calves and lambs transport to a maximum of 8 hours.

Exhausted animals pulled by their necks, pulled at their feet and starved. Every year, over 22,000 thousand lambs are transported from Poland to Italy. Among them many unposted, that is, those who should still consume mother's milk and are not used to or adapted to other food. They are very young, not fully independent animals.

Poland is also the third largest exporter of unweaned calves in Europe. They are young, recently born calves. According to the latest report of animal welfare organizations, the current regulations are systematically broken. Transports of very young animals are sent from Poland, covering even 1500 kilometers.

Such long transports are a special suffering for these young animals, which is why we demand a change in the length of transport to a maximum of 8 hours!

The results of the investigation

The conclusion is clear - it is impossible to provide suitable conditions for young animals if the transport takes more than 8 hours.

During the transport:

· depending on the season, animals suffer extreme cold or high temperatures,
trucks are not equipped with a watering system suitable for young calves and lambs, which should drink milk or its substitute,
· animals are not fed during the break, It happens that animals do not have enough space - the walls are too low and the animals can not lie down to rest. This is because calves are loaded on 3 levels, and lambs on 4,
· animals are brutally treated by employees of transport companies - pulled by the ears and tail and prodded with sticks,
· animals, and so weak, get sick or injured; the weakest die while driving or in the first days after reaching the place of fattening.

According to the regulations in force, there are situations when young animals can be transported for 9 hours, and after an hour of break another 9 hours. However, we believe that it is technically impossible to meet the conditions that allow it.

That's why we demand to limit the maximum transport time to 8 hours! Write to Minister Jurgiel to look after the fate of the youngest and most sensitive animals and support the change of rules for the whole EU.

What in exchange?

If it is impossible to transport the animals within a maximum of 8 hours (studies have shown that after this long time, animals suffer particularly severely and further transport becomes impossible for them due to physical and psychological pain), the transport of live animals must be strictly prohibited and turn it into a transport of frozen meat.
