More proof that our "corrections" system is a gulag. To all you nincompoops that constantly parrot the old line "Prison is not supposed to be a country club," I answer, "It isn't supposed to be Hell on Earth, either!" Besides, the majority of inmates are serving sentences for non-violent crimes - and a disproportionate number of them are poor and "colored."

The board of Aramark should be sent to one of the Big Houses they run - and given the same treatment as the other inmates. That'll larn 'em!

Good idea, Freya. Ani Mae, I agree. This is among the most disgusting thing I have read yet about prison profiteering.

Agreed, Freya H. This is cruel and unusual punishment meted out to prisoners. There is no excuse, other than profit, to serve substandard meals to anyone. If they do this to prisoners, who else will they do this to in the future?

Aramark should not even be in business if it is this unethical.

Fine fodder for a major lawsuit that should be working its way through the courts--and perhaps Snyder will be found culpable, too. Thanks Judy

And, for those who don't know, I'll add another... they supply food to U.S. troops!

And where is the ACLU? This is outrageous!

I notice that it is all about "saving money." Privatization, whether of food service to prisons, the actual prisons, or any other services, such as janitorial work, schools - anything - is always about "saving money." And it never does. The taxpayers always pay more and get less. Rick Snyder would do better to set up a food service division under the Department of Corrections, staff it with people who actually know what they are doing, and can Aramark and any other private company. But, of course, he won't.

From the article:

But the company, which has fed inmates dog food, worms, and scraps of food from old meals, maintains a stronghold on correctional food service in Michigan. Despite threats to terminate its contract, Gov. Rick Snyder (R) won’t let go of the company, which claims it will save taxpayers $12-16 million.

Well the people of Michigan better start voting in people that will protect HUMAN RIGHTS. Because no matter how one feels about those in prison, they ARE still HUMAN and we show who we are on the outside of prison on how we treat those behind bars.

Also appears those who are hired by this disgraceful company seems to be the scum of the earth as well. As Freya has mentioned not everyone behind bars is a murderer and even if they are we still feed them food that is not rotten.

Save money, the taxpayer saves nothing for when the lawsuit happens the taxpayer will pay, and we KNOW who the taxpayer is, the poor and middle class, the RICH don't pay they'll never share in the cost of this deplorable treatment. Until the people that are causing these conditions end up in prison then nothing is going to change.

This is why we need to take prisons out of the hands of private prisons; and get rid of all the Tbaggers who took over our state. This is totally disgusting and I saw where other states were doing the same thing. We need people to smarten up and get rid of those who are destroying our country. It's been on the news all week here. Snyder and his gang are nothing less than Organized Criminals.

Thanks, Dandelion. This was once a great state until the Tbaggers and Koch Crime Lords got a hold of it.

Thanks everyone. It's true, no matter what inmates have done, we as a society don't have an excuse for subhuman behavior towards them. I don't know if there's a petition on this, but I'll be looking for one. I'm fed up with privatization and the abysmal conduct of these corporations we taxpayers waste our money on.

This comment disappeared, so I'll try again. I signed Cara's petition. Many people made some good points above. Anyone who sees this, please go to the link JL. provided and read the Wikipedia entry on Aramark. They make BIG money.

Healthcare, utilities, prisons, schools, etc. should all be run on a non-profit basis. Not by for-profit companies that are family-owned or shareholders.
