Intentionally deceptive news has co-opted social media to go viral and influence millions. Science and technology can suggest why and how. But can they offer solutions?

For those interested in the truth above confirming their own biases, we are deluged with junk news. How can we tell the difference? From the article:

" “If everyone is entitled to their own facts,” says Yochai Benkler, codirector of the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University, echoing a fear expressed by many, “you can no longer have reasoned disagreements and productive compromise.” You’re “left with raw power,” he says, a war over who gets to decide what truth is.

As a generalization, FAKE NEWS is what is propagated through MAINSTREAM MEDIA channels, being that MAINSTREAM media channels are OWNED by rich OLIGARCHS.

I read yesterday where a Fox Newsperson stated on the air that the Russia investigation was not fake news due to Flynn's charges/testimony...thanks Judy I am seeing hope when even Fox is accepting such facts.

I agree Darren. Those oligarchs and their think tanks and media outlets are masters at manipulating the public, partly by feeding them what they want. JL I have noticed every once in a while that Fox does have some moments where they actually acknowledge the truth by looking at facts.

Yep, Peggy - LOL to Ben O's comment.

The best defenses against fake news are common sense and critical thinking. Be leery of even independent media. Remember, a lot of people slap the label "fake news" on anything they don't want to hear.

I'm really glad that many people are recognizing the crucial importance of being discriminating about what we accept as true, and how to keep our minds open at the same time that we keep a very critical eye on everything we read, even seemingly Progressive sources.

The concept that everyone ought to be allowed their own facts, is part of the problem! What that gives us is the biblical Tower of Babel, and I am not one to make biblical references!
Yes, fake news ought to be outlawed, Faux News ought to loose its license!!
