A horse that fell into an uncovered manhole, which then grew into a sinkhole in the city's south side, has died. The SPCA tells us the horse, an 8-year-old paint gelding named Sonny, was being prepared for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

How sad! The horse dies buried alive. What kind of an experience rider goes into man hole?

Noted!! Very sad news!! Giant craters in the ground like that should be barrackaded off so things like this couldn't happen!! At least the SPCA was there so the poor horse didn't have to suffer too long. Thanks Yrna!

Noted and so upset that it had to be euthenized. I love horses but don't like the thought of them in a Rodeo though!

What a waste of a beautiful animal's life. I double that the rider deliberately took him into danger and it seems as if the area around the manhole collapsed into a sinkhole after the horse stepped in the area. I feel for the fear and agony this horse suffered.

I apologize for my inability to spell and proof-read... it should have said that " I DOUBT the rider deliberately took" his horse into an unsafe area. I have been riding in Houston many times when I was younger and this seems like a freak but disturbing accident.

Note with great sadness, why was the man hole not blocked off? I am so sorry about the horse what a waste of a beautiful animal.

What a terrible tragedy. If a horse could fall into a hole like that then people, wildlife and livestock could also fall in. Hopefully the city of Houston will look into this and do some corrective action. May Sonny rest in peace and his guardian be comforted in knowing that he did the best he could to save him.
