The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service today (Mar. 2) announced its conclusion that the Eastern cougar, or mountain lion, no longer exists. The negative conclusion of a five-year USFWS survey of the issue is certain to be controversial.

Noted. Okay, it was not that long ago I read an article there was supposed to be cougars introduced into the Georgia Okefenokee and the Arkansas Ozarks... now is this a different breed of cougar, or what?? Sorry, but I'm confused....

This is such ashame. Why do people even THINK about shooting a wild animal even if they don't know what it is. They shot the last of a species of Tiger in China without exactly knowing what animal it was. They just THOUGHT it was another animal. THAT is how animals get extinct! I hate people who carry guns or rifles. It shouldn't be allowed and in America people can buy firearms willy nilly when they feel like it. I'd be surprised if they have to report it to the police station. They should bring in Gunlaws instead People killing animals just like that can also kill people just like that, without even thinking about it.

I bring good news and bad news. First the good: Folks in northern NH(Colbrooke) aren't going to buy the bridge - many know cougars are there. Now the bad: USFWS false conclusion would remove 'eastern' cougars from endangered species list and we all know how happy that would make the pro-gun lobby!

What a sad news. Another one beautiful animal gone forever. Hunting should be banned. What kind of persons who enjoy killing other living creatures...well, I call them murderers. Maybe it will be best if human just go extinct...

I saw this in the local paper this morning. This is such a shame. All murdered by humans. What fun it must be to kill off all of a species.GOD should has skipped over making humans and just created the animals, birds, marine life and vegetation.Everything would have been happier. No sense in reintroducing more to the mountains around here as it will be the same as where the wolves were introduced. All the gun happy idiots would just shoot them and we will have to fight for them also

The chief cause of the Eastern cougar's extinction is habitat encroachment as people continue to build housing developments further and further away from cities. Everyone wants to live out in the country and have a view of matter how much that desire damages the very nature about which people allege they care.

Hunting, while it certainly contributes to decreases in population numbers, isn't nearly the problem that human overpopulation and encroachment on natural habitats is. Everyone needs to choose to live in areas that are already developed. We must cease expanding into what's left of nature.

Very, very sad - but we can still hope and pray that there's a few 'unknown' ones running wild where no-one can 'get' to them!! And yes, 'put bricks on the head' of the human overpopulation and we might be able to restore some life on this planet, otherwise it's a waste of time to make any kind of list because the whole flippin animal kingdom will end up 'here today, gone tomorrow' as a result of humankind!

US Wildlife and state depts. of natural resources have turned a blind eye for years. I personally know credible people who have seen them but could not get them to come take a look and made fun of them. i only hope this magnifigant creature does still happily roam and hunt the blue ridge as well as intelligently escape human arrogance.
