Mental Disability Rights International (MDRI), has found children with disabilities hidden and wasting away, near death, in Romania's adult psychiatric facilities. A report released by MDRI, Hidden Suffering: Romania's Segregation and Abuse of Infants and Children with Disabilities, describes teenagers weighing no more than 27 pounds. Some children are tied down with bedsheets, their arms and legs twisted and left to atrophy.

Despite Romanian government claims that it has ended the placement of babies in institutions, MDRI found infants languishing in a medical facility so poorly staffed that the children never leave their cribs. Many of these children have no identity papers. Officially, they do not exist.

my petition god willing will go to th eu, the hague, the president of romania basescu. dateline 20/20 all over again and again if needbe until something is done . BABIES AND CHILDREN ARE NOT BIOLOGICAL GARBAGE BECAUSE THEY ARE ORPHANED OR DISABLED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is totally heartbreaking. I recall my days volunteering to help and successfully shutting down Willowbrook, an institution very much like this in Staten Island, NY many years ago.
Noted, disgusted and upset to see this going on, petition signed and word cross-posted via e-mail and a variety of groups and networks. Thank you for alerting me to this so hopefully we all can do something to right this terrible wrong.

Greetings Darling Sophia,

Thank you so much!!! Signed already; and please let me know what else I can do for these poor darlings! The thought of people acting so inhumanely towards innocents such as these not only sickens me, it dampens my spirit and heart!!! Again, thank you for all you are doing to help these children!!! And may the Goddess take them within her bosom and protect them!!!

And let's hope these campaigns bring the President of Romania to the Hague . . . as surely he deserves to be!!!

Visited site. Children all over the world are entitlled to better treatment to be given to them by the adults. Each child born into this world comes with the basic right to be cared for and to be loved by the adults. Love and care are the basic right of children. Such neglect of children should be condemened not only in Romania but i also in any other part of the world.

Sophia Darling,

Take strength in the knowledge that we are here to support your monumental efforts!!! And I think a Petition to the UN is one good way; also, contacting major Human Rights organisations would also facilitate this. Given that Oprah is very much on the side of children, that is yet another good idea!!! This video LITERALLY made me sick . . . and I hadn't eaten anything today!!! Thank goodness!!!

How is it that humans (Homo sapiens) have become so entrenched in these atrocities??? And how can they call themselves "spiritual" (regardless of religious affiliation) in any way when these types of actions are condoned and then hidden??? Bottom line, THEY CAN'T!!! Again, dear heart, I will do all that I can. There are several organisations that I know of who fight on these issues on an international basis. So, will check into that one later.

Just so you know . . . LAST CLASS is tonight!!! YIPPPEEEEEEE!!! School's out for the summer so no more teaching (*sniff*) for the time being; however still the Thesis. Neverthelss, this frees up my time more and so I shall be about C2 more! Dusty, Savitri, Victoria, Joycey, Trudi, JohnMichael, and Nancy . . . there is POWER IN NUMBERS!!! We are all powerful women . . . and JohnMicheal is incredible when it comes to promoting something of this nature . . . so let's take heart in the coalition we are building and then work to get the pressure on!!! Bless you all!! =)

That video, just a small portion of what goes on in Romania, is horrendous! It brought tears to my face, the lives these children now have to endure. Parents have to learn to take responsibility for their families. They have to be given suggestions from healthcare workers who can make suggestions as to how people can raise their children and not throw them into the institution. The government HAS to become involved! Instead of building and spending money on places, help subsidize these children! What good are buildings when there won't be anyone there to work in them and contribute to society? People NEED your help! Open your eyes and see farther than your nose! Take care of your children who are the adults of tomorrow! As one person said the mother of one baby brought him to the institution because she didn't think they were cute! That is abominable! One loves what they create no matter what and takes care of it! This person felt she could toss her child to the wolves because it wasn't cute! So now is she planning on having a "cute" one? And if that and the next and the next aren't "cute" will the child be brought to the institution? This is all just heartbreaking!
Once again to the governments of Romania, "Take care of your children today as they are the adults of tomorrow!"

I am writing this in tears, and total disbelief that children, no matter what their disabilities, could be treated in such a horrible manner! Gave up a child because she didn't think it was cute!!!! I am in awe!!! I actually need to get off here for a little bit and regain my composure.....when I get back on, anything you would ask me to do to help would not be too much.....please let me know Sophia and thank you for this post.

oh my GOD READ WHAT ON E OF OUR CARE2 MEMBER SIGNED ON THE PETITION!

# 92: Jul 13, 2007, James Jorgenson , California
I have witnessed these atrocities first hand at the Luminita Center and Victor Gomoiu Hospital in Bucharest, Romania. Many of the babies are happy and healthy babies that will ultimately deteriorate into bed ridden skeletons because of atrophy. Their feet are tied down to their cribs with ropes so that they will not climb out while unattended. One child I held, Mariana, was 4 years old and weighed less than 10 pounds. Her body was bones with skin and I cried because I thought I would kill her by picking her up and holding her. One of her feet was completely twisted backwards and she cried in pain. She gets fed liquefied carrots and potatoes through a syringe because her stomach cannot process solid foods. This is the most horrific thing I have ever experienced in my life! Romania continues to deny it has a problem or that any children remain institutionalized to this very day while an organization I support are there helping every single day on this issue. Please help!

I just rec'd and read this- having worked with people all my working life & having started life as an orphan I am sickened by this-this is the way orpahnages used to be here and even though the foster home system is flawed, nothing is worse than institutionalization because these children are dying for lack of love, caring and touch. That poor sweet little baby at 4 who has never been loved is dying from neglect and abandonment more than anything else. Even given food enough to live, without loving care, babies and children can die. I long to hold her and love her and ler her know she is loved-that is what this little one needs to live-to think there are so many of us with so much love to give and so many of them who so badly need it-how to cross that gap and get love to these babies. More than money or any material things, these children must have love. Noted

Jennie,
Your so right. This just tears your heart apart. Nobody holds these children. No body comforts them. NOBODY. No wonder so many, if they survive this suffer acute emotional distress disorder.
I don't understand why their local community doesn't bring good people into these places just to hold and comfort them. Shame on the world...:(

When oh when can we forgive ourselves for the sins against our children? I guess it's pretty unforgiveable for a child to be treated with anything but love and nurturing arms. Please take the time to share this story with your family and friends......nobody should be kept from the exposure of what is happening. Thanks for posting.

These are the throw-away children. So many in so many different places. Always hidden in the shadows of society. We must open the eyes of the world to end the suffering that these children endure. Unfortunately, many people will not even bother to look because it would cause a bit of discomfort. If we can't get them to look, how do we get them to help?

Greetings Sophia and Friends . . . so many of you!

I watched this a SECOND time with my husband; and once again, I am ashamed to call myself "human!!!" Can you imagine this? Of course not!!! None of us could . . . and still . . . they seek entry into the EU??? PPPLLLEEEAAASSSEEE!!! They will not gain entry if for no other reason, DUE TO THIS! And then again, that only condemns these children to the continued suffering. When I think of the numbers . . . 9,000 . . . I can't fathom it! Several of you have mentioned the 4 yr. old; or the baby who's mother left him because he wasn't "cute!" Aaarrrggghhh . . . most definitely as in pirates!

Without the care of people such as Sophia and all of you, this will continue; and this is not just Romania's children . . . it's the WORLD'S!!! Deepest gratitude again Sophia! And thanks for the group. I shall join asap . . . need a day or two to "release" from teaching . . . and I will be there! I know there are things that we can do to help these poor darlings. Shame, shame, shame on Romania and their CONTINUED denial of what is happening. For the government official to have stated that they are "protected" within the system is astonishing; moreover, to think that the EU will accept them with this existing and the monies going to build these horrid hells is just unbelievable. On the other hand . . . loss of entry into the EU does, as stated, guarentee that these children will continue to suffer. Sophia, we made need to petition the EU to make it CONDITIONAL that this ceases. How can we be this way??? Even our relatives in the Great Ape familes don't do this!!! So, what does that say about us???

My God there are so many people that would adopt these children before they ever had to be instatutionalized here in the USA. Come on what do we have to do to get these kids in the hands of loving homes here in the USA. This just made me sicker than anything I have seen to date. We have to do something.
I have signed the petition and will help in any way I can just let me know.

PRO-MEMORIA

For several decades in Romania, institutionalization was the only protection measure provided by the public administration authorities to an abandoned child or to a child in difficulty. The legislative and administrative measures initiated by communist system enabled the State to take care for our children by placing them to high capacity old-type institutions.

The institutionalization policy aimed at the children with special needs (who had to be isolated from society), as well as to the healthy infants and children coming from low living standards families. This type of policy had three goals:
1. exclusion from the "multilateral developed society" of the "Golden Era" of those persons that didn't match the perfect pattern of the "new man";
2. solving of the social problem (by denial of existence);
3. keeping enforced the pro-conception policies one of the main cause of the big number of undesired children.

The results of these policies were:
1. development of a "tradition" in Romania to protect a child in a residential institution. In Romanian culture, child abandonment was no longer a social crime.
2. child care institutions developed quickly, and the quality of care was influenced by the low living standards of people within the communist system.
3. generations of children became "clients" of these institutions and, because of the improper environment of institutions, they started to be excluded from the social life and isolated in the institutional system.

Unfortunately, after 1989 the issues of child protection are far from being solved. The communist policy of institutionalization was strongly rooted and the development of the public services that allow the child to be raised his natural family or provide the family type alternatives comes only later on. The evolution of the children categories under protection is shown in the bellow table.

The main cause of this delay was the existence of the "traditions" created by the communist system and their opposition to reorganization and support of a wide range of activities besides institutionalization. In fact, the "child care institutions" turned into "child supporting the functioning of the institutions".

We have had people here in Utah adopt from Romania, butI read that the govt.there put up a moratorium because the children" were not legally released for adoption by parents"--I think they didn't like the publicity!! So they have made it even harder to go in and visit the children!! And their red tape and travel and delays and basically bribes needed just make it over $10,000 to adopt, or more! And no guarantee when the expense tof ly and stay there and take time from work, that they will even let you in!! Everyone should also be aware of countries like China and others where girl babies are left to die or even killed or aborted!

I have been working on the Romania Project off and on sense 1994 when once again it was exposed to the world media. Countless letters have been sent to the United Nations, at least 25 of the largest Humanitarian Organizations worldwide, and all other sources. It was a major concern when I opened Eyes Wide Open in 2002 and literally hundreds of letters of concern went out to all of the above, once again to no avail. What more can we do, is the big question. In 2004 I attempted a collaborative effort and no one seemed interested. It was intended to bring several Humanitarian Organizations together in collaboration to bring strength to the efforts but the Romanian Government was uncooperative, as was several Organizational efforts. Yes, several times I have reached the stage of "burnout" and felt my/our efforts were hopeless, but I haven't given up. Through the efforts of "collaborating" all Humanitarian Organizations worldwide, I think we could gain the attention needed to offer the needed funding. Please help by writing letters of concern to the large Organizations to once again gain their attention to this extreme need. Adoption efforts worldwide are also needed and adoption costs and red tape could be changed to make it much easier to adopt a child. We could also find "placement" in many other countries if they were willing to take them in a Humanitarian effort to save their lives, such as refugees. There must be a way!! We must find it!!

This deep dark secret of abusing Children must stop. One has to ask himself, what benifit does this Government get out of abusing innocent Children? Is this some kind of sick ritual abuse that pleases the abusers?

Sadly, you'll find this type of abuse right here in our own US of A. It seems to me that a lot of Governments throughout this world is allowing this type of practice to go un-check. It is up to the people to demand justice for the children and check our Governments.

Abraham Lincoln once said: "To sin by silence when they should protest makes cowards of men."
It is all our duty to stand up for all helpless Children in this entire world.

J. Edgar Hoover, former head of the FBI once said:"The individual is handicapped by coming face to face with a conspiracy so monstrous he cannot believe it exists."

Nuff, said.

This is totally unexceptable! No child should be treated or live like this!! It's about time the Romania Government step up and finally corrected this problem!! This has been going on for years!! And it has been hidden from the world! You have organizations helping you EX WORLD VISION ! Also open up your boarders to proper adoption agencies, so some of these beautiful children can be adopted out to wonderful families!!! I know the Romania government has gone through a change. But this is no excuse!!! LET THE WORLD IN TO HELP YOU!!!!!!!!

Noted: Maybe we should examine the torture of children in every corner of the world. Human beings should realize that the emotional trauma of being a child in Iraq, is a multitude worse than any other torture, anywhere in the world today. Most places the terror is short and swift before the child dies. Most children in Iraq, have lived with years of terror, facing death in a hundred unspeakable ways.

Bryan you are correct that there are many places in the world where the lives of children is in fact a torture. As is the case with Iran and Irak and so many countries where life has become a living hell for some or all people including children become of war or poverty or whatever terrible events are occuring, we a re not free to enter that land and start changing things. We can try to make it clear that we care whether or not our nations governemtns also care. We can also make it clear on Care2 that there are people all over the world who really do care and whoa re willing to ttry to make this world better for others. Holly T

My husband and I were never blessed with children. When I see these pathetic youngsters, I can't help but ask myself why I couldn't have them with me. Romania pretty much closed its doors to foreign adoption. It's only if you've got enough money to pay all the bribes to government officials that you might get lucky. And let's not forget the age discrimination we ran into, also. Of course, it's the children who suffer. What a shame!

This has moved me to tears. I have seen footage before but nothing as recent. What can we do beyond signing petitions? Is there any route for people to adopt these kids? It's so appalling that in this day and age we cannot do more for these poor children. Please forward the video to all your friends and family and let them know that this still exists in 2007.

As a child growing up in foster homes with much abuse, I fully understand what a crime this is... even after years of so called reform. I became a teacher because my heart reaches out to all children.. It makes me cry.. again
