Teachers of the subject have emerged as an unlikely top target for the group because their lessons contradict its bizarre worldview on how the Earth was created. Boko Haram believes that the Earth is flat rather than spherical, and that rainfall

If you do not travel around it as part of your occupation, you really don't need to know if the world is flat or round. For local intents and purposes, it's flat.

My view is that religion explains why, while science explains how. Of course rainfall has a divine cause; it is God's will that rain falls when and where it does. Teaching that rain is condensed water vapor falling back to earth, which will evaporate again as part of the water cycle, does not conflict with the teaching that God is all-powerful.

Marcella, that is a very short-sighted view. Even if you travel why would you need to know if the world is flat or not? You need to know as part of an education that opens your eyes and mind to the WHOLE world and not just a hut in the middle of the forest.

Unlike most Americans who seem to believe that nothing exists outside of America other than a cultural wilderness, most of the world accepts that learning about other countries, cultures, people, habitats, wildlife, geology, is important. Many sciences are interactive such as atmospheric chemistry, anthropology, palaeontology, marine biology, geology or even something as "simple" as the weather. It is far too naive and insulting to say that just because you live in a village in the middle of "nowhere" that you don't need to know more than the world is flat!

My best wishes to Nigeria's remaining geography teachers and their students.

Of course people also need to know about religion but which one? I assume that you are talking about Christianity but to assume that that is the only and best religion is insulting to others who believe in a different one or none at all.

Religion needs to be taught so that people understand and are not scared of different faiths. But it needs to be kept away from other subjects. And, whilst I respect your belief, I expect you to respect mine and everyone elses'. Faith does not belong in a discussion about science and merely takes education back in time when evolution could not be taught because it wasn't in the bible!

Some faiths have backwards or alternative views about such things as creation, the shape of the earth, etc., but only one religion kills people for believing something other than their dogma: ISLAM. Once it gets its foot in the door, everyone's in trouble. Hence, Nigeria.

Totalitarian regimes always prefer uneducated, unarmed masses. Without access to these means of defense, physical and intellectual, it's very easy to bully people into submission.

Noted with thanks. Shortly, the rest of the globe will be in a similar boat. Unless we remove corruption from our governments, (controlled by the 1%), all ships will sink. That means, global revolution. Do you think mankind can focus, put down their guns, trust their inner awareness, educate themselves on what scientists and environmentalists have warned of, open their eyes and really see that Climate Change is now too real and in their own backyard---and do you think man will unite and remove that corruption so that they can take action to allow Earth to heal and renew itself? My hopes are low--even though all across Europe, right this minute, an ocean of people are peacefully protesting, in solidarity---trying to do just that. Thanks Beatrice.
