As gas prices rise, drivers are paying closer attention to the fuel economy gauges that are found in most late-model cars as part of the trip computer. The only problem is that the gauges are inaccurate.

The auto manufacturers should publish a disclaimer or a range of MPG the driver can expect. I assume mileage can be affected by road conditions, driving style, age of the vehicle, quality of gas used in the car, etc.
