Here Are Six Companies That Get Rich Off Prisoners

There are currently 2.4 million people in American prisons. This number has grown by 500% in the past 30 years. While the United States has only 5% of the world's population, it holds 25 percent of the world's total prisoners. Money maker for the 1%.

John Oliver does another great job with the video. Remember, they can't make money if there are no prisoners.

I'm sure we can get Bernie Sanders interested in prison reform.

This country is in desperate need of a major overhaul - but the finks in Congress are more interested in playing party politics, and kissing the arses of wealthy supporters, than helping save this country. We need major, extensive surgery - and we're bloody lucky to get even a Band-Aid.

Privatized prisons are one of my pet peeves. This article covers many abuses in our increasingly terrible system. A lot of these things you would expect to find in a repressive dictatorship or third world country, not the U.S. One of the more troubling developments is the criminalizing of more and more activities, used to target minorities and the poor. Wealth disparity is ever more apparent in the criminal justice and legal systems. Predators are ready at every turn to exploit those with limited resources, which this article outlines very well.

The video is funny, and after reading these facts, we need to laugh. Thanks Dandelion.

Shocking and heartbreaking what is going on in US jails. What happened to "America, the Beautiful?"

Prison reform and the Clintons. My how short our memories are.

It was Bill Clinton, with Hillary Clinton's blessings, that signed in the 1994 Omnibus Crime Bill; the crime bill that accelerated the rate of prison construction. Clinton presided over an administration that, in its first term, saw an additional 277,000 prisoners incarcerated in federal and state facilities. During Bill Clinton's eight-year tenure, the total population of federal and state prisons combined rose by 673,000 inmates.

Guilty conscious she has perhaps?

Thanks for sharing that, Dandelion. Never really stopped to THINK about it that way... companies making money off of prisoners/prisons. Glad I'm not in any of those businesses.

$$$ is what it is all about for sure. Totally ridiculous the crap that goes on in this country. An example of their theft would be when there are 3 prisons within a 5 mile radius--they each have their own superintendent's, deputy superintendents, etc. down the line. No reason for this -one superintendent could take care of all 3 prisons as with the deputy superintendents. Then they are refusing to hire all the help needed and making workers do jobs other than their own and not being paid the difference in the salaries. Both security and civilian staff are not being treated as they should be. Bless all who care.

Thx Sheryl. I've known most of this, not all, though, and also posted in the past about e.g. the GEO group and that global Tel-link. The forfeitures thing is horrendeously despicable, didnt know.

Ther are a couple of empty beds in that photo, means someone has to pay, guess that'll be you.
With 98% wanting reform, it is well over time!

I do the best I can to bring information to the people, because honestly, most are not even aware of a lot of this. It becomes a reality for them when they get hit over the head with it and receive a rude awakening of reality. That is not the time to understand what is policy and laws over here.

The Country most people THINK they live in is in fact NOT the Country at all. Yet not enough will take the time to read and learn and so this crap remains. But if I even enlighten one or two more, the seed has been planted so I hope they in turn let others know.

John Oliver is doing a good job and he obviously reaches a larger audience. But for those who missed him this may of reached someone.

I had known of GEO and CCA, but not the others. This article should make it plain to everyone that the system is corrupt and broken.

I knew of some of this before - but the details here of needed prison occupancy, and of 'civil asset forfeiture' and the rest make my jaw hang open.

How the heck did people in America let this happen?! I suppose the people responsible for electing the bleeps who passed these laws are all so self involved that they can't see beyond the ends of their noses, and they certainly don't care about anyone other than themselves, nor do they care about innocents suffering. I do hope no good lawmakers voted for these corruptible laws.

John Oliver's video is superb (completely frightening, even terrifying, but superb). To describe this accurately, one only has to move the name of the country concerned to one we are used to hearing about with a bad human rights record, and we would immediately shout 'That's corruption!'.
