Twelve days after his 22nd birthday, Kalief Browder wrapped an air-conditioner power cord around his neck and hanged himself.

In 2010, at the age of 16, he was arrested after being accused of stealing a backpack. He would spend three years in New York City’s Rikers Island prison, more than two of those years in solitary confinement.

He was beaten by prison guards and inmates alike.

He was not serving a sentence; he was in pretrial detention. He declined all plea bargains. He wanted his day in court, to prove his innocence.

A judge finally dismissed the case against him.

After his release, Kalief Browder tried to reclaim his life.

In the end, the nightmare he lived through overwhelmed him.

Two years after his release, he committed suicide.

The last paragraph in article sums it up perfectly.

That taxpayer money went to house a 16-year-old in solitary confinement to the point that he lost his mind — rather than to bail him out or get him a decent attorney — lays at our very feet the death of Kalief Browder.

He did not take his life last weekend. We took it from him.

Three years locked up without a trial, two in solitary? WTF? Is this the United States of America - or North Korea? All because his family couldn't come up with three train in cash to bail him out. Anybody who does not find this outrageous lacks either a heart, a conscience, or a soul - and maybe two or all three of those. Time for petitions out the wazoo, mass protests, lots of screaming and hell-raising! The USA has so many serious problems, I fear that we are headed for a serious meltdown - and that only measures drastic in the extreme could even begin to turn us around.

I did hear about this tragic story of Kalief Browder. How can they get away with such outlandish violations of the US Constitution -- no cruel and unusual punishment and right to a speedy trial!? Someone (or several people) should do time in prison for this, but of course nothing like that will happen. I'll have to read the article later.

Would he have received the unjust treatment he got if he had been a white caucasian from a middle class family?Shame on the system that allowed this to happen .and all those who drove him to an early death,

Makes one realise why the US isn't criticising abusive treatment of children elsewhere round the globe ...

So tragic. How can one expect a 16 year old to cope with such treatment ... How can they have confidence that any system will be reliable, when the system goes so wrong?

This is unbelieveable. Investigate, get the facts and prosecute those responsible. There must be justice for this American.

I signed a petition yesterday to alter NY's laws for juveniles related to issues involved in this case and another to change the requirements for cash bail, which his family couldn't afford. Sad that it takes such horrid consequences before people acknowledge a law could harm people like happened here. Thanks Dandelion

JL A...could you post the link to that petition here. Thanks AniMae for looking, my time is so limited now on here I can't do as much searching as I use to do; but I certainly wanted to get this information out concerning this young man.

OMG....I just had a family member incarcerated last Tuesday. THE SYSTEM DOESN'T CARE. THEY DON'T GIVE A F***. $12 and $14 for one 15 minute phone call from jail. INSANE. This is so sad about this young man. Noted, and sharing thru all my outlets.

I'm sorry to read that Phyllis. I am aware of the robbery of the telephone calls. Once the so called justice system gets ahold of you, you are doomed, whether innocent or not. The system just bleeds one to death, financially to both emotionally and physically. It also messes with the entire family of the one who is captured in this mess.

It is stories like this that makes me ashamed of this country to no end. To have anyone spend years in jail without being sentenced through a trial is unbelievable. The system is wrong! I'll also bet there aren't many whites who suffer such an end. I can hardly speak further, I'm so disgusted!

Solitary confinement is torture and three years in jail for probably stealing a backpack! What could have been the intention of such a harsh handling? It resulted in a kind of death penalty at least. Shattering!

Sheryl G (360)
Thursday June 18, 2015, 3:27 pm
Very true Irene, a harsh sentence for a "possible" theft of a backpack. He never had a trial so we have not even a guilty sentence, he remained innocent until the end and that was always his story, he was not guilty.

i hope they get sued to high hell

this prison for profit crap needs to end... i didnt see that in the article but im guessing that was an incentive...
putting child in rikers vowed to not do that again..I doubt it

that he was beaten and no did a damn thing...even the guards....LAWSUIT

maybe putting thsolse in charge inside will change things...not that that will ever happen
