The War on Cops Is Pure Propaganda - The Real Story Is Police Suicide

If law enforcement were genuine about wanting to save the lives of cops, they would begin by attempting to put focus on the out of control epidemic of police suicides, which dwarfs the number of cops fatally shot the line of duty.

The mainstream media often portrays the unfortunate random killing of police officers as analogous to a larger “war on cops.” The reality is that there is a concerted public relations effort underway, on the part of law enforcement, with the intention of stemming the growing public calls for more oversight and accountability.

The last year on public record for police suicides was 2012, with a staggering 126 officers reported to have intentionally killed themselves. Compare that with the number of police fatally shot in the line of duty last year; 47.

American police are 300% more likely to kill themselves than be shot and killed by another individual.

One swallow does not a summer make, nor one - or even two or three - isolated attacks on cops a war on the police make. This is a very difficult and stressful profession.

These men who ended their lives should have been given stress leave and received counselling when the signs of their problems started to appear.Had that happened thoy would probably still be alive and still serving the community.

I discovered last year that the private hospital we favour here in our area also has a special wing for treating people with stress problems. Then I was told that the MAJORITY of the patients were policemen & firefighters.

Law enforcement must be a thankless task, given that every region is going to have its own particular types of crime to deal with, and the laws that exist seem quite inadequate for the purpose of enforcing.

With the fragmentation of societies caused by income inequality amongst others, the additional problem is cuts to services, which ADD to the issues, rather than easing them.

"When I was a LAPD officer I had at least 6 partners and supervisors included who “ate” their guns. This police propaganda crap is occurring because they’re desperate and cops backs are up against the wall. They will resort to ANY tactic or issue and use it to inflate the situation. I perceive in the not so distant future some of these cowboy “John Wayne” types will instigate a fear driven attack against activists."

Why don't come clean about this situation a try to find a solution to these suicides???

I think many Police officers suffer from PTSD just like soldiers do and they need a BETTER program for counseling and support. These are VERY STRESSFUL jobs.

The US police officers education should be different. They should be taught to protect people, and not to attack them like in movies. This certainly would help them too. Darren W. and Tonia D. say it all. Thanks for sharing.

Possibly better training and less stigmatizing if law enforcement officers want to get help for psychological problems early on could reduce this number considerably. Sadly, there's too much Macho Macho going on and those who are having problems get swept under the rug...or told to Suck It Up. Thanx Dandelion.

So many different stories, & statistics are frequently changed to suit someone's interests, hard to know what to believe quite often. Take it all with a pinch of salt.

Sad--agree with Walter also. PTSD affects more than our Military and it needs to be addressed. Bless all who care.

There is no war on our law enforcement. There is, however, major concern about policing practices of rogue officers. Their violence needs to end.

I heard about this phenomenon from The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore. If you'd like to see a humorous way of presenting this lie, try going here to see Larry's show:

I had to suspend my Ghostery app and my Adblock app before it would work. But I find Larry's Show well worth it.
