Alabama Birthplace of the Voting Rights Act Is Once Again Gutting Voting Rights

US Politics & Gov't  (tags: Voter ID, voter restrictions, gutting voter rights, highest black voters, poor voters )

- 1354 days ago -
Alabama passed a strict voter-ID law and then closed 31 DMV offices in the state. The state is shuttering DMV offices in eight of the 10 counties with the highest concentration of black voters.

Democracy [dih-mok-ruh-see]

1. government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.
2. a state of society characterized by formal equality of rights and privileges.
3. political or social equality; democratic spirit.
4. the common people of a community as distinguished from any privileged class; the common people with respect to their political power.

It's not is it?

Alabama ranks toward the bottom in education, libraries per capita, health care, income per capita, poverty rates and 39th in best places to live. Why don't the voters demand that the state do a better job in providing a better atmosphere for living......instead, of doing crazy things like closing DMVs? It also has a very poor voter turnout rating. Not much to be proud of.

The courts have struck down similar laws elsewhere--let us hope a case is working its way through the backlog to be heard in time for AL. Thanks Dandelion

Reminds me of why we know the names of more cities in AL than in most states...Birmingham, Selma, Montgomery...from when George Wallace was Governor before he made a third party try for President on a platform that included restoring prayer to the schools...sometimes I think the playbook some are following is the one he tested...just hope it fails like it did for him

Disgusting and despicable. Shame on the people in power in Alabama who are doing this. How they live with themselves is beyond me.

The nerve to do something this blatantly racist is hard to comprehend. If anyone thinks racism is a thing of the past in this country, this provides outrageous evidence to the contrary. They are getting by with it! Thanks Dandelion.

Thanks for the petition, JL, which I signed.

Having wasted the first 16 years of my life within the State of Alabama, any- and everything that is negative and backward comes as no surprise to me! Mississippi gets the reputation for such (which IS the case!); however, Alabama is just as bad. My high school friend, who still lives in Alabama told me "This town hasn't changed one bit since you lived here." I am now in my mid-60's!!! So we're talking about 50 years or more??? Thank you for sharing, Dandelion!

I read about this a few days ago, and this article only strengthens my stance on these heinously racist acts - I cannot believe this is happening in today's society. We need a MASSIVE outcry and these politicians need to be impeached!! Shared liberally

Already signed the Common Cause petition. I am completely disgusted by those seeking to take us backwards! Why must we continually fight the same battles over and over again? The U.S. can't move forward and progress as long as the 'squeaky wheels' are being heard on issues already decided. The media must stop portraying these voices as sensible.

you know you continueously hear about those dammed republician politicos , but they wouldn't be in there if it wasn't for the stupid populous that votes them in election after election. so it's not just the stupid republicians but the stupid voters of the state . I guess it wants it's title back as the most racist , bigoted state in the union back . I'm amazed they haven't found a new , geo. Wallace . one without wheels . sorry if I sound mean and nasty but I don't think I'm saying or calling them anything they aren't or don't deserve to be called . I guess I'm sad that it has all regressed 75 or 100 years . I know other countries have some of the same issues , but none so large and none so prominently displayed .
