Landfill Fire Moves Closer To Tons of Buried Atomic Waste

The fire burning underneath a dump is causing health problems while politicians and the landfill owners fight over what if anything to do about it. Tons of radioactive waste was illegally dumped there nearly five decades ago from the Manhattan Project.

Well "something" is being done about this.....

The "do nothing" Republican has finally arrived to the rescue.

Meanwhile, Kurt Schaefer, a state senator and a Republican candidate for attorney general, has added an amendment to a bill that would grant landfills in the state immunity from certain citizen-initiated lawsuits.

Schaefer is currently a partner at Lathrop & Gage, which is representing Republic against Koster’s lawsuit, although he is not listed as an attorney on the case. He denies his amendment is related to the Bridgeton landfill controversy.

.......Sure it's got nothing to do with this.....so thank you once again, our Republican politicians jumping up to NOT help the victims here, but to protect the Corporate interests and ultimately those responsible for a mess and health hazard.

For me, this is yet more evidence that there are a mass number of critical issues being allowed to fester and destroy the majority of the planet's "We The People". Even nature has been tampered with to such a degree and for so long that it has become naturally unnatural, with Climate Change's super storms and other cataclysms. If the "One Percent of Super Rich Elitist Corporate Rulers Of The Planet" weren't purposely allowing this massive genocide, they would have stepped in long ago. It has become very evident to them that they require only one last thing of us---our absence. They need what's left of the natural resources, hoping that with a great reduction in population, the planet will repair, heal. That it will also buy time to refine preparations for leaving Earth if and when necessary. Presently, this earth and all living, have only one chance, as to governmental assistance. A return of a true democracy, the unification of world leaders and the global "We The People", by a diplomatic peacemaker. We have only one candidate who is a good soul and who has these passionate convictions. Our "Democratic Socialist", also the only runner not taking big money for his campaign, so he won't owe them favors. In so many ways, he is a political breath of fresh air and wishes to return the oxygen to that air. Bernie Sanders. Send powerful, magical, healing and positive energies his way, as often as you can. He's also the only candidate not receiving splashes of publicity and needs the average man's support in many ways. Vote and help.

Thanks for sharing this update with us Dandelion--exemplifies how one can dishonor one's oath of office once one sells one's soul to corporations.

Noted. Thanks for posting, Dandelion.
I have been reading articles regarding this for awhile.....hadn't seen this latest update. My family almost moved there some years back; glad we stayed put. This should have absolutely nothing to do with state government. This should be completely up to the E.P.A......and it is a mess! It has been going on since early Dec., 2009---over 6 YEARS!

A Dandelion by any other name would be just as good at finding important stories to post on Care2. This is why we need to dump nuclear energy and go 100% renewable. Also, we do need to continue research into FUSION, which leaves zero radioactive waste. Yes, it's a major undertaking now - but remember how long it took us to achieve heavier-than-air sustained flight.

wow! I wonder if you can see the glow from space when it finally reaches the site? How many other nuke sites secretly buried in the ground, dumped in barrels in the ocean...doesn't all that stuff have half lives of hundreds of years that would remain long after the containers have rusted out?

I had seen a couple of stories on this landfill, and didn't know for sure what to make of it. Apparently a lot of people don't know, either. It's pretty safe to say that moving the waste would not be a viable or safe alternative. I really feel for the people who are living in that vicinity. Unfortunately, they can't necessarily just leave the area, which seems like the only good course of action. And of course the authorities say, "There is no danger to the public...blaa...blaa..."

Bring this information with you to the rallies, public hearings, demonstrations and share it with people. For it is something that could happen elsewhere. If it can happen here it can happen again somewhere else.

For anyone that owns a home, they are required to disclose such things, who is going to buy their home? As the woman in the article said, she could not live with herself even if she could, knowing she was placing the new owners into the same situation.

This is what is also happening to people whose water is being ruined by fracking or their land destroyed as fracking also causes earthquakes and sinkholes. These Corporations get to make all the profit and the land that the people paid to live there upon are left with all the losses. Plus how can you place a price upon the health of your family?

If we don't band together, if the American people don't wake up, we'll all be eventually living next to our own "Love Canal".......

Illigally dumped? What laws in 1945 were broken ?
At that time the effects of radioactivity were not really that well understood.
And what MORON decides and/or approves colocating a waste dump with a residential area - or any area at all frequented by people?

And as usual you Americans are more interested in passing blame and punishing than doing anything to handle the problem.

This is shocking on so many levels...a fire burning in landfill for YEARS? Illegally dumped radioactive waste near a town? Bickering about whether or not to even do anything about it....Deplorable, Despicable and numerous other 'D' words!
