His pick Dr. Robert Califf who led a research dept funded by Big Pharma. He was also a paid consultant for drug companies including Eli Lily, Merck, and Novartis. A cozy relationship with pharmaceutical industry who funded this mans entire career.

"And this is why voters are falling in love with people like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, because they have the courage to speak out against the corporate-political revolving door. And that’s what we need in a leader now – someone that isn’t afraid to say no to corporations, and that person certainly isn’t Barack Obama."

Wow another disappointment from the president this week!

Taken from within the article:

Here’s the short list of Dr. Califf’s accomplishments on behalf of Big Pharma:

– He’s been an outspoken critic of regulations on the drug industry

– He’s said that the FDA is too slow to approve new drugs

– He thinks testing requirements are too strict for drug companies

– He helped fund two separate drug company startups

– He says that collusion between the industry and government is the wave of the future.

The FDA already relies on testing performed and funded by the drug companies for 60% of their approvals. This means that the agency is already letting big pharma police itself, and that’s exactly what Dr. Califf wants more of.

And the criteria that they use was created in the 1960’s and hasn’t been updated to keep pace with modern medicine.

More than 100,000 people die every year from taking prescription drugs as directed. That doesn’t include the numbers of people who overdose or mix medications – that’s the number of people who die every single year from drug side effects.

Think about Eric Holder. He came from a corporate defense law firm where he represented the big banks, and then he refused to take white collar crime seriously when he was at the DOJ. Having an industry insider at the FDA is an even worse scenario because we’re talking about people’s lives here.

2 comments.....and after reading other articles about this.....

1. sadly no one seems to list an alternative.....

2. not a good nominee, but "worst selection ever" might be a little hyperbole???

Why is anyone surprised...we all know Obama may be a Democrat but he's also establishment. Thanx Dandelion.

Alternative? Why not some of these brilliant people who are advocating on behalf of the American people? I can think of an immediate two off the top of my head......Dr. Jill Stein and Dr. Margaret Flowers. Why must we always have the revolving door and the Corporate types to screw us over some more.

As to the title....okay, the man hasn't been in his job yet, so maybe he won't be the worst, but from reading his background and what he has spoken on so far it doesn't look good.

I signed a petition to ask my senators to block his nomination. One of my senators wrote me back saying she was satisfied with his nomination - and both my senators are Dems (sigh).

Noted. Thanks for posting this info, Dandelion.

I hoped that Obama would have made some better choices....pro-active to the people of this country, rather than the 1% Establishment.....before leaving office. Oh, silly me!
I have been disgusted by his choices since he took office and named "insiders" as well as Republicans to his cabinet. He allowed too many Bush appointees to remain entrenched as well.

I am not the only one who noticed this and have been quite angry. That is exactly the reason why so many Dems are behind Bernie. The 4 people he recently named to be part of the DNC rules committee were absolutely fantastic!

That is the truly said thing, is we are not surprised. We should be furious....this affects us all, our very health and well being, whether someone lives or dies.

Yes, we should be furious but how many are actually paying attention? I just watched Cornell West, (whom I've always respected) say that: "Obama is a Republican in Black Face". It's a bit harsh, or is it? Thanks Dandi, posted to FB.

Noted & posted. Most of them are and that's the sad part. Most of the choices have been compromised by some MR. BIG.

SuSanne, your comment about Obama being a Republican in Black face is not too dissimilar to the observation that Tony Blair and his New Labour Party in the 1990s/2000s were essentially a Conservative Tory party in drag.

Democratic (bordering on Socialist) parties are supposed to be the tool of the people, and NOT Big Capitalist Corporate businesses.

Bernie Sanders and Jeremy Corbyn (and Dr. Jill Stein) are ALL essentially singing from the same hymn sheet, that is, that Governments are the servants of the public, and NOT the other way around. |

Bernie has said he would take on Wall Street. Jeremy Corbyn has said he would NATIONALIZE a lot of what has been privatized. Again, to reiterate, Democratic (Socialist) parties are there for the people. Capitalist Conservative Parties are there for Corporate Big Business.

Democracy in both Britain and the US is skewed in favour of Capitalism and the big multi-nationals. Every so often, one of the power possessors will do something to appease and pacify the mass electorate (y'see, we're on your side!!!).

The amusement in Britain comes from the infighting, implosion of the Conservatives who are arguing amongst themselves on BREXIT or not. This is creating hysteria and the mass suggestibility of the public is being challenged, as the same party is completely split and confused and engaged in dirty scaremongering tactics to get their own viewpoint across.

I agree with Dandelion that we should all be furious. THAT WAY, that energy WOULD impact on the powers-that-be, and maybe something would shift. It's a big ask.

The power that Big Pharma wields is indeed far reaching, including many laws. It is terrifying.

Obama lost my respect long ago, but this is so low and extremely destructive. Many lives will not only be lost, but suffering and cause obscene hardships will be in the mix. Hope Obama sleeps as well as he deserves to and finds himself increasingly becoming sensitive to the screaming vibrations surrounding his aura. Karma. Thanks Dandelion.
